The US cares far more about geopolitical location than "values".

Erdogan basically won again. People who see intl relations as matters of ideology (presumably since that's what they're told) are completely native & deluded about how the world works.

On paper, sure, but if the rubber meets the road, will Americans or Europeans go fight and die for a dictatorial and Islamist Turkey or just hang them out to dry?

Various sources put the total number of people being purged at 50,000 as of today.

That's one in every 1600 Turks so it stands to reason that most Turks know at least someone who's been purged.

That'll keep them in line for Caliph Erdogan.

Oh I think it's obvious he is consolidating control over the educational system, as well as the political system and military. What I am not sure of is what justification will be given for doing so. The military and political purges he can at least 'say' are due to the coup (though I think it's more than that).

He has, is, and will blame "un-Islamist, evil, meddling, foreigners", whether they are Turkish or American or Japanese, as they are not "one of us", and outside the monolithic, endonomous, endogamous, xenophobic, patriarchal, fundamentalist, fascist, ultra-authoritarian, theocracy. Whether or not much or most of Turkey is yet that, which is certainly is not, and I doubt even the core of AKP society is yet that throughly, that is the ideological base of the current AKP ideology, and that is the direction they will do everything they can to move Turkey and the rest of the world towards. Reminds me of a certain ethno-religious culture that has existed for a few millennia to the south.

And here is who he is blaming.

Ergodan isn't stupid enough to put the US in a position to choose.

Erdogan says they'll formerly request extradition of the cleric (Gulin or something) currently living in the US.

IMO this move by Erdogan supports those who argue Erdogan is using the failed coup as an opportunity to wipe out his opposition, whether or not they had anything to do with the coup.

America does it for a Unitary Islamic absolute monarchy so I can't see why not

Turkey doesn't have oil. They are busy turning themselves into big Syria.
Latest purge news is they are asking thousands of teachers and college deans to resign. Islamists are going to fit the void, and in a generation, Turkey will be a country of Islamist idiots and a goner as far as the Western world is concerned.

As mentioned Turkey has geopolitical value. Long as Ergodan can reasonably follow instructions he'll be fine far as the west is concerned.

widening a purge of the army, police and judiciary on Tuesday to universities and schools, the intelligence agency and religious authorities.
Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the coup
After last year's shooting down a Russian plane, Turkey has now dramatically turned on Western allies. Such revolution towards both isolation and Islamic theocracy can only mean one thing... Erdogan plans to make himself head of a "legitimate" Islamic State.

If Erdogan continues down this path, he will drop NATO for Russia and China. Bringing eastern powers a major doorway to Europe and the Middle East.

Turkey's power cutoff to Incirlik Air Base a problem for Pentagon
Will the United States trade a likely innocent man's life?

I condemn the possible extradition of Fethullah Gulen. Where is the evidence, and what possible value could a 75 year old man have to Erdogan? They used to be political partners in the 90s. Something tells me Gulen saw the future of Turkey before anyone else. He knew the devil rising, and his public speech gives no cause to doubt his innocence.

I expect Erdogan to take a sacrifice and still spit in our faces. Remember, NATO requires Democratic members. That is not the future Erdogan plans. He has already apologized to Russia. He is making his move now.

Erdogan is just doing what's best for Erdogan, and currently that means consolidating his base of support.

If the US pushes him away then Russia or China might be his next best option, which is why the US won't.

This is a pertinent quote from your link:
The friendliness of Turkey towards the United States has declined markedly since 2003, primarily a result of the United States' action in the Iraq War in 2003. Turkey views the war as a significant threat because Northern Iraq acts as a haven for the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Furthermore, Turkey views the destabilization of Iraq as a possible impetus for Kurds to claim their independence from Turkey, Iraq, and/or other Middle Eastern countries with significant Kurdish populations. A further strain in relations has been attributed to disagreements over the American support of Kurdish YPG fighters in the Syrian Civil War, with Turkey openly targeting them militarily.

America is arming Turkey's enemies. I am totally confident that won't backfire and blow up in our faces. Gotta love the US, doing its damnedest to destabilize every fucking country in the Middle East.

Gotta love how you are just fine and in love with throwing the Kurds under the bus and watching them get slaughtered if it means getting back at "big evil america".

America isn't arming the Kurds out of some sense of altruism if that's what you're implying.

On a side note, a turkish friend of mine was remarking that despite popular notions to the contrary, Turkish society in general has been gradually secularizing to this day. It's more the case that the majority religious conservatives have learned how to wield political power as of late, which Ergodan skillfully employs to his advantage. It's also funny that people tell me said friend is actually pretty religious, but he talks about islam quite a bit less than the blowhards here do.

No, I was more implying that bshole was fine with turning our backs on the Kurds if it meant taking BIG BAD AMERICA out of the world.

Turkey shuts down 15 universities, 934 schools, 104 foundations, 109 dormitories, 35 hospitals, 1,125 associations, 19 unions today. Turkish government seizes properties of all these schools, universities and private institutions that were shut down in a massive crackdown. Turkish authorities arrest 7 academics, including Sedat Laciner and his brother, as part of a purge against critical academics. The number of detained generals and admirals involved in the coup attempt rises to 133. Turkey has 358 generals and admirals. Erdogan issues a decree that allows 30-day detention period, without a right to visitation or medical service.
