Possible damage to CPU surface?

Rockin an old Q6600 w/ Arctic 7 Freezer Pro for media PC. The fan bearings tend to make some squealing noise... if I tap on the fan with a screwdriver handle it tends to make the squealing go away for awhile. Tapped on it today, admittedly a little harder than I should have because I was a bit frustrated, and PC shut down. Overheating after startup, upwards of 100C CPU temp. Reseated heat sink and applied new grease, was still idling around 70C. Took heat sink back off and applied more grease. It is now idling around 60C but hitting upwards of 75C under load which is a wee bit out of my comfort zone. Previous idle temps were no more than 42C, load around 50. Is it possible I put a slight bend in the CPU surface that's not allowing heat sink to make proper contact across the top of the CPU? Try again with more grease or accept the fact that I damaged CPU? The PC is like an old girlfriend I keep crawling back to, I just can't say goodbye for good! We've been together over 10 years.

Maybe you bent a heatpipe slightly, or disturbed (damaged) one of the heatsink mounts.

Honesty, I'd just try to obtain a new heatsink at this point.

Hyper TX3 is cheap, I think, so is the DeepCool Gammaxx 400 AR.

Did you replace the bad fan ? The one you had to "tap on the fan with a screwdriver handle it tends to make the squealing go away for awhile." ?
Then you "Tapped on it today, admittedly a little harder ... and PC shut down."
You just need to get a bigger hammer.

I would think that it's very unlikely that you damaged the CPU by hitting the heatsink/fan.

I would be looking at the heatsink and fan itself. Have you checked to see if the fan is even running any more?

Fan is consistently pushing 2000rpm. Must have done something to the heatsink, either damaged the fins that connect to the mount or possibly a heat pipe. Heatsink seems to be making proper contact withe CPU, and I checked all the mounts to make sure I didn't pop one out. Either way I imagine it's best to replace it since the fan is going.

Yup, just replace HSF and you are good to go. Q6600 is a great CPU, nice to see it going strong after so many years

I am going to go with didn't damage the CPU spreader. A Heatsink is going to be pretty well pressed evenly across the top of the CPU. A heat to a HSF is going to ripple down to the CPU but evenly across the whole thing.

Update! Installed new cooler and she's runnin as cold as ever. Can't even push her past 44C, mind you this CPU is overvolted to 1.4v! Might be time to jack her back up to 3.3ghz, tuned her down a couple years ago to 3.0ghz because of summer heat. Just can't figure out what I did to the old HSF, my best guess is that I put a slight bend in one of the mounting fins so that it's not making proper contact with the CPU. Thanks for the help everybody
