That has been refuted previously in regards to this round of store closings. A liquidator is assisting the stores, but they are still CompUSA run.

If it wasn't in this thread it was in one on CDFreaks.

The cashiers' were also instructed to write "VOID" on the back of the receipts as well. At least I know most of them at the store I'm at are doing so..

All the stores I have been in here in the Seattle area have actually been advertising many of the items as having mail in rebates in addition to the percentage off, so they must have cleared mail-ins with some vendors and redemption centers. Of course, three months from now when you get a postcard that the rebate is not valid, there won't be any place to go to get recourse if you're in an are like I am where every store on this side of the state is closing.

Just checked one out a bit ago.....was like a funeral.

Not much in terms of good deals, only a few things I even considered spending money on. 30% off cases/psu/mobo/cpus as others mentioned, but everything is pretty cleared out. You can probably snag a few fans or heatsinks for a bit cheaper than online, but not much.

10% off monitors, which is decent. Some of the more notable prices were for the Apple Cinema Displays. $899 for the 23" and $1799 for the 30". Not great, but if you really wanted a Cinema, I don't think they go on sale much normally. Lots of 22" in the $250-330 range after 10% off. Gateway FPD2485W 10% off for $611+tax or so.

20% off headphones. Again, nothing spectacular, but they had some of the cheaper Sennheisers and gaming headphone/mic combos for sale.

15% off PC Games. They haven't restocked their titles in a long time, but the retail prices weren't overly inflated so there were some decent deals at 15% off.

30% off cables, but they're still ridiculously priced.

No sign of any XBox360, PS3 units or Windows Vista, so I'm pretty sure those have all been moved to other locations or sold online.

I doubt I'll go back, maybe if there's reports of a 50%+ last week clearance but it'll be a mad house at that point. It doesn't even feel like a retail store in there anymore...so morbid.

Just hit up Kirkland, WA again. Been about 2 weeks since I first checked it out. Nothing really changed. Of note:

Vista / Office 2007 is 15% off. For Vista, aside from Business Edition, all they have is Upgrades. But they had a bunch, including 2-3 "Signature Edition" (Ultimate). Prices weren't inflated I think.

I got excited when I saw a BFG 680i SLi Motherboard, as all mobos are 30% off. But, when I had them do a price check, it's jacked up to $339!!! After the discount and our nearly 9% sales tax, it's a ~$20 savings off newegg. Probably less if I shop around. So not worth it at all. Especially considering the EVGA version is identical and ~$249 online.

After reading about CPU deals people have been getting, I hung around the upgrade counter a bit. The counter is in an obscure place to begin with, and the lights were off. Then when you went in there, they had a glass case 10-12' behind the counter with some X2 procs and a lone C2D. Well, the AM2 X2 4200+ was $239 - 20% and the E6400 was $279 - 20%. Still WAAAAAY over priced.

Will be at least another couple weeks before anything is actually a GOOD deal at this CUSA. By then, all the suckers will have cleaned it out.

Don't forget, all sales final, you are NOT buying from Compusa, you are buying from a Liquidator that will poof in couple months. 5 minutes from Compusa I have half a dozen different stores that will cheerfully give me a full refund up to like 30 days, will price match if stuff goes on sale. Also some items only have a warranty through the seller, which means no warranty. Until there is more like a 20% REAL savings I don't see the value as breaking even considering the downside.

The cashier's have also been instructed to black out the bar codes, which means you probably wont be able to return it at a different retailer...

Wow, talk about a crap thing to do, how does having a upc symbol hurt compusa!!

Obviously, you haven't been paying attention or just don't understand. CompUSA is now in no way connected with the stores that are closing. The closing stores are being managed by a liquidator, not CompUSA.

Hence, you are buying goods essentially as-is/where-is from the liquidator, not CompUSA......and the goods should be treated like open box items from Newegg. You'll most likely get the manufacturer to honor their warranty on their product, but some may balk because it was not purchased from an "authorized retailer" but from a liquidation seller.....just like buying at an auction.

And this is why some of the items will have their bar codes blacked out.....the product is no longer seen as a retail product but as a off-market, liquidated item, a lot like a surplus item or a returned item or the like.

Yes, but, they are still being sold out of a compusa store (name on the store last time I checked), and the receipt still says compusa on it. Whether a 3rd party is selling it or not, the impression is that everything is still run by compusa.

The employees are still wearing shirts that say COMPUSA on them as well.

I went to a CompUSA that is closing here in San Diego and I was not impressed at all.

10% off products that are marked up to begin with doesnt help much.

forgot about the closings and while i was in the area over the w/e i saw people on the street corners holding signs about the "sale". went in and took a look.. not impressed at all.. everything was regular price and 5-10% off pretty much. There was this one item in the PDA section that had a lower price crossed out with a pen but you could still see that it was a clearance item that was selling for a good amount less than this sale's 10% off regular price.
no wonder these folks have to shut down all these stores.

Well, considering not more than a year or two ago, when 1GB to 2GB flash MP3 Players were the norm, one store I stopped at had the audacity to price - as manager's specials, no less - a very cheapo brand 32MB MP3 player at $89.

Note: this was not 32GB, but 32MB. Enough to hold maybe one album, at high compression.

I pointed this out to the guy at the counter and he just shrugged.

No wonder CompUSA is going out of business. At least we still have Microcenter here in Michigan, but I'm really, really hoping and praying for a Fry's to open someday here. I make a pilgrimage to one of their stores whenever I'm in San Diego for business or Las Vegas for vacation, and I'd love to see what they would do with a car theme.

According to other boards I've read nothing has changed. I'm gonna take a drive this weekend and see whats up. Really pathetic that almost a month into the closings nothing has changed.

I went earlier this week, and there was only 1 or 2 increases since I was there 2 weeks prior. What is crazy is how much stuff they've been able to clear out already! Suckers go crazy for a "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE!" sign!

Same here in Bellevue. The prices are still pretty high. From what the manager told me comp-usa has nothing to do with the prices etc, it's all up to the liquidator.

Reminds me of when Lechmeres, a dept store chain in the NE area, went out of business. I went in the day it went down to 30% off and the store was almost empty . I asked one of the sales clerk if they got a big rush in the morning. He said "No, most of the store went when it was only 10% off." He also called them suckers.

I stopped by the Brighton, MA store today, but before I post my findings I'd like to make one point. I'm not sure how much CompUSA is paying this liquidating firm, but they have earned every penny. They have managed to clear out virtually the entire store without offering anything remotely resembling a bargain. Amazing.

And now for the "deals". The store is still showing everything as 10-30% off which is the same as it was when I was there 2 weeks ago. Cables are still at 30%, blank DVDs have dropped "all the way" to 15%, and the TVs are now at 15% (making them a mere 25% more than an average online retailer). This was all I needed to see to determine I was wasting my time. The clerk told me they were given May 31st as the last possible day the store would be open, although it could close earlier than that if things clear out faster. I'd say about 15-20% of the sales floor has been completely, or almost completely cleared of merchandise.

Just because its not in the store doesn't mean retail customers bought it. Some brands HATE their stuff being sold cheap and buy back inventory, so you can bet everything Compusa could return to distributors they returned. Then come the buyers from other stores in the area carrying the same brands, and they make wholesale deals to keep the prices up.

Liquidators keep the store "looking" like tons of stuff have sold, and may have the back room stacked to the ceiling. These guys have been at this scam for many years and know how to milk it for all its worth.

I remember when this music store was going out of business a few years back, and I bought a bunch of stuff on sale there, after someone bought it I went back, and the same stuff was even cheaper.
