Possible DNS problem, not really sure though?

What up everybody. I'm here with a question from a friend. Las night my friend called me and told me he could not access any website through his web browser (IE and FireFox) nor could he play any on on line video games or access the internet in any general way. Yet the other computers on his network were not having the same problem. This makes me think the problem is isolated to his computer. I had him run through couple of things, check some settings and nothing worked. The only thing we stumbled upon while using ipconfig was that even though he has obtained a lease he has no connection-specific DNS suffix, but connected to DNS servers. I had him ping some websites using url's instead of ip's and all the pings were success full. He than called his ISP and they told him the problem could be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling his network drivers. but doesn't the fact that he can ping outside webiste imply that everything on the hardware level is operational? In my opinion it has to be some setting, maybe tcp/ip setting or i guess individual DNS problem, but since that doesn't make all that sense either since his all other computers on the network can browse the internet. well, any thought, comments, suggestions, or whatnot would greatly appericated.

Well since you said that you had him ping URL's instead of IP's that would lead me to believe that his problem isn't DNS because the names are being resolved correctly. How long has it been since the router / cable modem has been recycled (i.e. powered down and turned back on)? I've had similar experiences with this before. Also determine if he has any firewall software and turn that off and see if the problem still arises. Maybe port 80 (port for internet) and other ports that are used to play games have been blocked by the firewall.

I don't believe you necessarily need a DNS suffix because I assume his house doesn't have a DNS server and he is calling out to the DNS servers from his ISP.

Here are a few things you can try to help troubleshoot the problem (just a shot even though you said he could ping WWW sites):

Ping the router
Ping the DNS servers
Ping a WWW site both with IP and URL
Try and reset the router and cable modem.

I hope this helps!

I'm guessing you mean the other way, that you had him ping by IP address. If so, then the problem is likely DNS related. If he really CAN ping with an address, the problem is not DNS related.

BTW corey: those suggestions might work if he hadn't said it was one computer in his house out of several

I'd suggest make sure everything is set on auto. Like automatically get IP, etc. Reboot that computer. Maybe as was suggested, disable and re-enable the network card in device manager (alternativly you can do it in the network connections window). I've done that before, usually you can do that in just a few seconds.

Oh and there's a command you can try to flush out the dns cache in windows which sometimes gets filled with crap.
ipconfig /flushdns
I think. run ipconfig with /? to see.
