Heh... another member on this forum who joined the wet side.

If anyone needs advice, feel free to pm me. I can point you out to a water setup that will do very well with these girls.

Only requirement i ask b4 you nuke my mailbox is please check out my sticky for general FAQs. Then pm me for parts / recomendations after you thought about how your going to mount/impliment this migration.

I left parts out of the sticky, because i didnt want to say Brand X was the best, and a few months later have Brand Y destroy it.

IE. Storm was the best, But the Fusion/ApogeeGT/GTX owned the hell out of it in C2D chips, and basically raped it in Cooling a Quadcore. As much as 5-8C difference.

I have a B3 Q6600 with a Thermalright 120 Extreme running on an Asus Striker Extreme board, but no matter what I do I seem to hit an FSB wall at 350mhz (1400FSB).

This is with temps in the low 30's, and underclocked PC2-8500 RAM, and even when I drop my CPU multiplier to 6, the 350mhz FSB wall still seems to exist.

Now there's no way the Striker Extreme has a 350mhz FSB limit, so does anyone have any ideas/explanations for why this appears to be the max I can do?

As it is, because of the wall, I've had to limit my OC to 3.0ghz, 333mhz, 1333FSB with a CPU multiplier of 9.

Have you tried an even higher fsb. I'm saying this because at 350 you may be caught in the edge of a nbcc strap, and this would explain why you have trouble going above it.

Yeah, I've tried 350-400mhz with no success.

Is there any way to overcome these walls?

Try going a little over 400MHz. I know it sounds weird but some people have had problems from the high 300MHz's to 400MHz and when they go above 400MHz, everything stabilizes again.

Also, I have a Cooler Master Hyper TX2 (Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro equivalent) lying around and am getting a G0 Q6600. Will it sufficiently cool it for 333MHz x 9 (3.0GHz)?

I have one (Cooler Master TX2) on my q6600 and, after running it at stock for a couple weeks, started playing around with clocking it today. I did not hit a point of instability but maybe I got high enough to see how CM TX2 works. I haven't OC'ed anything since the Slot 1 days so I may be up in the night so I'll give you the numbers I stopped at...

Prime95 Torture test (guess it might not be up to the task?)
FSB 345 with 9x mult =~3.1GHz
Core temps: 50 51 50 50 (as reported by RightMARK which is a couple degrees higher than what is reported by EasyTune5)
VCore (1.36v, my first guess and never adjusted)

Memory is Corsair XPS2 800 running at 5-5-5-12 (another first guess) and 2.05v (another first guess) letting the FSB kick it up to a bit over 1000

Idle at stock the cpu cores stay around 28c and so these settings seem to have warmed it up about 22 or 23c but my uninformed impression is that with the G0 Thermal rating at 71c there may be a lot of room left.

I have only one case fan but it's a doozy. I have it set to about one third speed for quietness so I don't know how to report whatever impact my airflow imparts.

I would have kept cranking up the FSB but I am starting to think I could run into memory issues at these speeds and will resume after I learn about dividers and what to do with them. The temperatures have been almost flat since I turned up the vcore, FSB changes seem to have almost no effect. That makes me think Prime95 just can't stress the chip enough. Anyway, maybe that will give the more experienced folks around here enough info to judge the TX2. I bought it because of the small size, low price ($12) and good benchmarks I saw on MadShrimps

do you own a quadcore?

Do you have any idea of what B3 and G0 steppings are?

Do you know the required Vcore for him to pull off 3.0ghz successfully?

Im sorry to sound like a ass, but if you dont have a quadcore please dont participate in quadcore threads, unless your asking a question.

Yes, you sound just like an ass.

If you want a budget build to stay around 3GHz (higher if you have G0), stick with the AC FP7. If you can afford better, decide for yourself.

I have a Q6600, B3 stepping @ 3 Ghz (original voltage 1.328), adjusted Vcore 1.3750
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7
P5K Vanilla
Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case

Rock solid at 2x Orthos, idles at 43c, 60c at full load. Completely safe temperatures that shouldn't harm anything.

I have been watching people on these forums constantly pimp only a few coolers (Sycthe, Tuniq, Thermalright) and pat each other on the back for it. In the real world, you save maybe one or two degrees Celsius compared to the AC. So, unless you are looking to go beyond 3.2, or you get really unlucky with a hot processor, you should be just dandy at 3ghz with the AC.

Your case could be a problem, but it is unlikely to be serious.

Cheers

um...dude i don't know what you consider a "budget build", but last time i checked a budget build didn't include a $250~$300 processor. besides, if you're willing to spend that much on a processor what's $60 or $70 on a good heatsink? if it works fine for you, that's great, maybe you got a monster oc'er, or maybe you're just god's gift to overclocking . but the truth is that most people haven't been able to take b3 q6600's to 3ghz with safe volts and temps on that heatsink. i don't have any first hand experience with C2Q's, but i would rather listen to all of the veteran oc'ers here who have c2q's (in some cases more than one) than you, some guy who joined a few weeks ago and has 12 posts, because they have lots of experience with overclocking in general, and for all i know this is your first oc'ing rig and you just got lucky.

Ok. Just found Prime95 v25.3. It changed the temps quite a bit

I ran the torture test blend for an hour and the peaks (apparently during Test3) got to
60 58 59 61c
with the fan running quiet. I put it through again with the fan on full voltage and it came in at
57 56 57 58c

So I was right in guessing that Prime95 24.14 wasn't stressing it.

I tried taking the vcore down from 1.36 to 1.24 and it continued to run stably at 345x9
but the temps fell into the 47-48c range. Seems my first guess was a little high there.

Anyway, that should provide a much more realistic basis for deciding if the CoolerMater TX2 is any good. BTW, the case is an Ultra Wizard (steel) with none of the knockouts open and just the one (serious) case fan (and the case closed, of course).

On a side note, anyone have any suggestions on how I might best move forward on this overclock (memory settings, target temperatures, etc)?

I had it with my BT, I tried taking off the backplate and wrecked my mobo. Note to everyone: dont buy a HSF that has you stick the backplate to the motherboard with super strong double sided mounting tape.

Same with the Tuniq - horrible aspect of the design.

I have used the BT and the Tuniq tower and installed both without taking the tape off. That solves the issue without having any negative effect on performance. The only thing negative about leaving the tape on is it gets a little harder to install the heatsinks since you have to hold down the backplate while you are putting the screws in.

As a side note, my newly put together P35-DS3L, Q6600 G0 at 1.25V@ 2.4ghz on a Tuniq Tower is getting between 55-61*C all 4 cores loaded with Prime95 v25.3. I haven't even began overclocking and the temps are ridiculous! In comparison my E6400 at 1.3625 @ 3.4ghz on a Big Typhoon with P965-DS3 and both cores loaded was getting 50-51*C. I am speechless and don't even know what I can possibly do to lower the temps.... My new case has 2x120 mm fans compared to my old case with 2x92 mm fans.
