Dell selling Apple's iPods!

Apparently they are selling them through phone orders... and hopefully internet orders soon!

"Both Dell and Target are selling the iPod at Apple's standard prices. The 5GB model sells for $299, the 10GB version for $399 and the 20GB model for $499. "

You'll have to wait for one of the "Software and Peripherals" promotions @ Dell. Stay tuned to this forum - and you'll quickly be alerted when such a Dell sale comes about. When you see the discount has begun for a period of a few days, and the iPod is finally available for on-line purchases, then you get busy - work a deal and place an order. However, I think the 20% off might be pushing it a little. Typically, you won't see the 20% off with a single promotion, but in the form of a "combination" or promotions. I remeber seeing a lot of 15% off deals + stackable coupons, but the 20% might be quite rare. But, this sounds like a great deal, nonetheless.

Target is also selling Ipods. I find it funny that sales of these things increase when they release a Windows compatabile version. It is a beautiful piece of equipment, but it is not really helping Apple sell computers.

well the one on JFang888's link is the pc version, you can tell because it says "a 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire adapter" which is only included on the pc versions.

I hope they sell the mac ones though, cause xplay is sooooo much better than musicmatch

I don't think they'll sell Mac accessories as they are a PC maker Even the article states that it will be Windows version only.

Sweet deal. I will keep an eye for the deals and try to be the first to post it up when the deal comes. I cant wait to get a ipod.

I think the 20GB one is the best deal. But its also the biggest. The 10GB is the smallest and should be considered as being a good choice as well.

But I hope to use the thing as a portable hard drive as well if I buy it so... I guess I will plunge for the 20 GB.

Keep in mind that dell home does not charge taxes, while Apple.com does, so you also save some if your state charges 9% sales tax like my state.

In addition to stackable coupons, 15%/20% off, also keep in mind to use ebates for another 3% or is it 2% for dell home. And tag on the discover 1/2% And we got US a huge saving.

Definately sweet.

Check out this Kbase article for more information regarding "switching" your iPod. Here's the relevant information, and you can check the site for more info.

Question 8: I have both a Mac and a PC. Will my iPod work on both?
Answer: No, iPod is specially configured for either Mac or PC. iPod for Mac comes in the HFS Plus file format which is optimized for performance and usability in Mac OS X and 9. iPod for Windows comes in the FAT32 file format which is optimized for performance and usability in Windows ME, 2000, and XP.

If you purchased an iPod for Windows, you can easily reformat it to work on your Mac by downloading the iPod for Mac Software Updater on the Apple Web site. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Macs. You need Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X 10.1 or later to reformat an iPod for Windows into an iPod for Mac.

You cannot reformat an iPod for Mac to work with Windows.

Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple.

Question 9: Can I use my existing iPod for Mac on a PC, or my iPod for Windows on a Mac?
Answer: You can reformat your iPod for Windows into an iPod for Mac, but it is not possible to reconfigure your iPod for Mac to an iPod for Windows. This is because Windows does not support the HFS+ file system and therefore will not see the drive.

Isn't it possible for OS X to see a FAT32 partition? I know Linux can read/write to FAT32 partitions, so I'm guessing it can't be all that difficult to make OS X see a FAT32 partition....such as the Windows iPod.

disregard this info. They only state this because it's basically not supported by Apple. I use my mac ipod on both my mac and my PC at the same time. No problems. Formatting back and forth is also no problem.

Since we've already drifted a bit from the iPod (which is very sweet BTW), you may want to check this out for the same $ as an iPod:
Archos

It got a good review here, too:

Wow...that's pretty dumb that the iPod can't be viewed by both PC's and Mac's at the same time....I went out and got a small firewire/usb enclosure, put a 10 gig laptop hard drive in it, and it can be used to transfer files back and forth between both platforms just fine (formatted FAT32, I believe). Of course, it can't play mp3's, but it only cost me about $100.

If you can't wait, jandr has the 10 gig ipod on sale for $339. (usually $399)

My 2 cents.
