Hello all...

My main desktop PC is approx. 2 years old. Problem is starting it up after a cold shutdown... I push the power button, system starts up for about a second and then turns off on it's own. I have to repeat this 3 times every time and then it turns on and stays on.

Not sure if this is a power issue? PSU is an EVGA G5 750. It's only 2 months old, it replaced the Corsair HX850 that I recycled from a different build.

Other hardware is an i3 9100, ASRock B365M PRO4, 32GB DDR4 3200, RTX 2080 FE, Samsung 980 500G.

Any help and advice is appreciated.

Sounds like the PSU. Double check everything else though to make sure things are fully seated before going after the PSU. Get a PSU tester and test it.

Define what you mean by a "cold shutdown". Are you flipping the switch on the PSU or a UPS to turn the system completely off?

OK, another possibility is the power switch for the case. You might try disconnecting the power (and reset if it has one) switch from the case and see if jumping the pins to turn on the PC changes anything.

Sorry that I wasn't clear, by "cold shutdown" I mean that the system is powered off, not a sleep or hibernated state.
So you've disabled "Fast Shutdown" under Power Options, Button Config., under Windows? If not, try that. Your rig may be crashing under hybrid sleep (where selecting "shut down" doesn't actually shut down.)

If every time, it takes 3 tries then works, that seems suspicious to me.

Another possibility might be that you have unstable bios settings and it reverts to some default setting after the 3 failed attempts. If that might be it, I would look for an updated bios and if you have changed anything, maybe even if not, clear CMOS and check the battery voltage.

Maybe some random power surge, scrambled some bios setting. Seems unlikely but I have had something that seemed related, happen before, that a board lost its settings, then after a few tries, restored itself from a 2nd bios because it had a dual bios feature, then kept working for months if not now years later so no permanent damage seemed to have happened.
