Possible PSU problem?

I have a very odd problem. Just recently, I purchased an Athlon FX-53 CPU, and the ASUS K8V motherboard. I bought 1GB of Registered DDR 400 memory, and kept my hard drives, video card, CD drives and my 350Watt Enermax PSU.

A new problem cropped up as soon as I had it all put together. When the computer boots up, right before the Windows XP splash screen comes up, the hard drive makes a audible clicking noise, and spins down, then spins back up. As soon as it is done spinning back up, Windows boots like normal.

This doesnt appear to have an adverse effect on anything (so far) but it does add unneccesary time and complication to my boot up process. I also can't imagine it's good for the hard drive to be spinning down and back up with a click.

Here is what I've tried so far: I tried switching the hard drive with a brand new WD Raptor, same exact thing happened. It also can't be the bus, because my current hard drive is a 15,000 RPM SCSI, and the problem occurs using the SCSI or SATA bus. I also changed my memory out.

I did try an alternate power supply, a Ultra connect 400watt. The problem persisted. Now my question is, could my rig be requiring even more power? I thought about trying out the Antec Maximum PC recommended 480 watt. If anyone out there has suggestions, please let me know. I'm posting my full specs below:

Athlon FX-53
ASUS K8V Mobo
1GB Corsair DDR 400
Fujitsu MAS 15,000 RPM SCSI
Western Digital 1200JB x2
ATI Radeon X800XT PE
Soundblaster Audigy 2 NX (external)
Plextor CDRW
Liteon DVD
Floppy drive

Did you do a repair install of windows when you put in the new hardware?

It does seem like PSU, or a crazy software error.

But I'm not going to rule out the A8V, some of them are weird because Asus had a lot of problems after the Tsunami.

Whenever I've seen that happen it's either low voltage from the PSU or a failing hard drive.

I had one do it the other day. When I checked the voltages the 5 volt rail was WAY out of spec (4.46 volts). Replaced the PSU and it worked fine.

Try swapping the PSU if you have a spare (no need to install it just hook up the wires for a test).

Download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic and run a full (advanced) test on the drive and see if it passes.

Hope this helps...
