There must be something in the Scam Artists Code that specifies the use of the white panel van as opposed to any other vehicle. There must be a clause that says they get fined for using another color or type.

This must be some kind of franchise thing they have going. Pay some money and you get a white SUV/VAN and then 10 or so pairs of speakers. This is common in Orlando, it's even discussed on a local radio show. I got approached by the infamous "speaker van" and had to call in and tell my story on the radio show.

So what you are trying to say is that they were pushing Bose?

As others have said, these types of things are scams. Some of my friends actually fell for it a couple years ago. I almost went in on the "deal" with them, but couldn't afford the speakers even if the quality was as good as the guy was saying. If you want a good laugh, do a search on the forum archives for "acoustic image" in the OT section.

In 1988 I was working at a high-end audio dealer in Maple Shade, NJ & we would often get calls from guys asking about "Acoustic Monitor" speakers, and if they were any good.

I would ask them, "Did a guy in a van approach you about buying these speakers? Did he tell you that they were delivered w/o paperwork to an audio dealer & are worth $1500?" The guy on the phone would always hesitate a bit & say "...Yeah". These guys were buying them for around $500 thinking it was a great deal!

I used to take great pleasure in telling them they just spent $500 on crappy Chinese speakers that were worth about $50 & that "Acoustic Monitor" is not a legitimate brand...That he was scammed just like dozens of other people. The conversation would end w/ the caller sounding embarrassed & hanging up.

I did a quick Google search and found a link to a pair: LINK

This is an old scam that probably goes back many years & preys on our normally hidden dishonest sides.

I always remember the saying, "It's hard to con an honest person"

This thread has brough back some old memories...

I've been approached twice in Brevard County, Florida. One guy came right into our mom & pop computer store (right past the "no soliciting" sign) and tried selling speakers to one of my employees.

I got you all beat. I'm driving on the freeway, doing about 70. A guy pulls up next to me and starts gesticulating wildly. I'm thinking my car must be on fire, so I roll down the window...

"Hey man, you want to buy some speakers?"

It was so funny, I almost crashed. Now that's what I call a motivated seller!

Ok, so i was doing alot of errands today and stopped at an auto store this morning and a explorer pulls up and try's selling me this cheap looking speaker equipment that has a price tag in big letters $1999.99, i was thinking "yeah right". Then maybe 4 hours later 8 miles away from the first spot, another guy pulls up to me when i'm walking away from an ATM. Same deal selling some 1.5k speakers and trying to sell them for cheap.

The first time i really just ignored it and didn;t bother getting any info like brand. The second time really got me interested since this thing seemed big if so many people were doing it. found out the brand was "Skyline" and i looked it up and all i could find was "SkyLine AD-900SL" with a bunch of big auctions without a single bid.

Anyways, keep an eye out. BTW no i did not buy anything from either one . Kinda sad tho that they picked me twice, either they thought i was really stupid or had some money, thing is, i was working on my car so i was all dirty so i'm guessing they thought really stupid.

Also from san jose - a friend of mine bought a vcr from the back of an explorer (the ones with chrome all over and fuzzy dice hanging on the mirrors) for like $40 back when they were selling for about $200. Came home and opened the box.. surprise! a bunch of bricks.

haha.. don't trust those vans.

a guys tried to sell me a Canon camera for $150 in a parking lot. he said he stole it from Ciruit City which sell it for $500+. i looked at the camera, the Canon logo looked suspiciously fake, and i've never seen any $500 camera that look so cheap. anyway, this is nothing compared to jewery scams in China, it's hilarious yet there's always some stupid old aged women who fell for the scams.

Lol, one time I was in a mall parking lot (heading to the mall) with buds, and this guy comes and goes "hey, want some speakers?"

We didn't want them, and the next thing, the guys in the SUV go "hey, want a purse? We got it for free!"

I was gonna report them to the popo had I had a cell phone there and then....:disgust:

Anyway, when the van was leaving, I thought I would follow them just to see where they were going. They went to a nice restraunt here in town. After they went in, I went to their van, slashed two tires, and keyed the back of it with the words "SCAM VAN". I didn't wait around, but I bet those guys were ticked off! hahaha!
Haha... you rock!

You know he was right, though...right?
