Ok, so i was doing alot of errands today and stopped at an auto store this morning and a explorer pulls up and try's selling me this cheap looking speaker equipment that has a price tag in big letters $1999.99, i was thinking "yeah right". Then maybe 4 hours later 8 miles away from the first spot, another guy pulls up to me when i'm walking away from an ATM. Same deal selling some 1.5k speakers and trying to sell them for cheap.

The first time i really just ignored it and didn;t bother getting any info like brand. The second time really got me interested since this thing seemed big if so many people were doing it. found out the brand was "Skyline" and i looked it up and all i could find was "SkyLine AD-900SL" with a bunch of big auctions without a single bid.

Anyways, keep an eye out. BTW no i did not buy anything from either one . Kinda sad tho that they picked me twice, either they thought i was really stupid or had some money, thing is, i was working on my car so i was all dirty so i'm guessing they thought really stupid.

BTW: I'm from the Bay Area (san jose), first place i was approched was near hollywood video on capitol exp way, and second time was at a bank of america near bernel and santa teresa.

This scam has been going on 'forever'. The rule is "Never buy speakers from some guy in a van". I think the same applies for buying speakers out of the back of an Explorer.

Not a good idea.

I have not had someone try to pull that scam on me in 12 years, at the time I worked for a high end audio shop and had a great time harassing them about the cheap ass speakers they had, no name, bad quality if you open them up, the speakers themselves tweeter, woofer, midrange are 2-4 dollar each speakers from China, Mexico at any big swap meet, or electronics dealer.. Any speaker out of the back of a van is either hot, cheap, or hot/cheap. NOT a hot deal...

Next time ask if you can try them out. Walk over to them and pretend to plug something in, then start jamming with your air guitar.

Then tell him they sound like sh!t.

yeah that is the first time somone tried that scam on me, i gotta go do more errand i hope i run into them again just for fun.

This happened to me once awhile back. I let him believe I was interested. Led him on for a few days and he finally got the idea. Fun while it lasted though.

I'll have to remember the air guitar trick for next time.....priceless!

LOL, as soon as I saw the title of this thread I thought 'speaker guy in white van' and I don't even live in CA.

I got hit up a couple of years ago by a white van. I told the guy I had a pair of Bose 901's and wasn't intrerested. He then proceeded to tell me what a POS they were. I told him to go pound sand.

I was at a car wash here in Texas, just minding my own damn business, when a WHITE VAN pulls up, asking me if I wanted some high quality speakers for a rock bottom price. They probably picked me because I just got a new car. Anyway, I just kind of ignored them and they started talking to others at the wash. I was so mad because of these low life people trying to rip off others in my town! It's worse enough that we have low life people on the corners of intersections, holding up signs saying, "Anything will help, GOD BLESS!".

Anyway, when the van was leaving, I thought I would follow them just to see where they were going. They went to a nice restraunt here in town. After they went in, I went to their van, slashed two tires, and keyed the back of it with the words "SCAM VAN". I didn't wait around, but I bet those guys were ticked off! hahaha!

Why don't you guys just call the cops with a description or license plate number of the van? Some idiot tried selling me some speakers twice near UC Irvine and I just called the cops with a description of the van and never saw him again. I'm sure these guys don't have business licenses, plus I'm sure bored cops can hit them up for other stuff.

How interesting... My friends and I were just talking about this very subject yesterday...

I hear some are very convincing... uniforms, invoices, business cards, websites, etc.

i've been hit by the same guy, in the same safeway parking lot twice in one year. i honestly don't really care that they do it, because it can be fun to toy with them. and to be honest, anyone who buys speakers out of the back of a van deserves to get scammed

I've actually seen these same guys twice in a big suburban type of car at the Wells Fargo in San Jose as well. They approached me for the second time and told them you guys asked me the same shiznit last week. They tripped out and jetted from there and its annoying but they tried to talk me into buying the cheap ass speakers. The reason was that they bought them for a friend but he backed out on the deal or something like that and they are expensive speakers and to sell them for dirt cheap.

Same thing in Texas, I was filling up my car minding my bussiness and this car honks at me. These two guys (probably 20's) pull up in an explorer and say "We are from out of town, we just went to pick up our order of speakers and they gave us a pair for free by mistake" then the driver takes out a receipt and says "this is not a scam, if you don't like them you can take them back". I just kept saying no and they just drove away. Wish I thought of something clever to do.
