People on the Valve mailing list for server admins received a message earlier today saying a mandatory update was coming out today.
It's going to be a Christmas/Holiday themed thing, not a class update. Gabe said that after the popularity of the Halloween achievements/hats/map, it was likely they would do the same now.
Plus class updates are always preceded by 4-5 days of slowly unveiling the update. We haven't seen that here.
edit: The comic is likely a teaser, saying that the next class update will be soldier and/or demoman.

So: how is the War update different from our other class updates?
In many ways, it's not. Like any other class update, the War update will reveal three new weapons each for the Demoman and Soldier throughout the week, as well as some maps, achievements, and surprises, right up until the day of release, when everything we've been teasing goes live.
Where the War update differs from other class updates is that we've decided to mix things up a little with, as the Administrator would say, "a healthy competition." A secret, exclusive seventh weapon has also been developed by the TF2 team. In other words, either the Soldier or the Demo (but NOT both) is walking out of this update with one more weapon than the other. If you want your class to have it, you're going to have to fight for it. The more Demomen you kill as the Soldier class will help ensure the Soldier gets the weapon at the end of the week. The more Soldiers you kill as the Demo will help the Demo class get the exclusive seventh weapon. Check back daily to see how your class is doing at the War hubpage — this is also where you'll see links to all the leaked previews of the weapons, maps, and surprises releasing soon with this update.
What if some of you try to cheat to bump the numbers? We'll know. (Though we also know many of you won't be able to resist trying anyway.)

I agree, the Demoman should logically (at least on paper, and by practice) win that "war", he's generally simply better than a Soldier. The only thing that the Solder has the advantage of, if it can even be called so, would be one of those good ol' random crit rocket, and that's only if he knows how to aim.
I think in many pub maps, especially those with very little open field, demoman has an advantage over soldier because of stickie traps and a better mobility. But if in a 1 on 1 in an open arena battlefield, I think soldier will win.
I hope demoman will win this war because less people play demoman as their main class, and less people can play a decent demoman than soldier, so less people will abuse/take advantage of the exclusive weapon :X
This is also what I thought, until I started playing it. It's not about who kills what, but you have to kill the opposite class, and it's easier to kill demo's than soldiers playing as a soldier/demo respectively.I don't know where you play but everywhere I've ever played and ever heard has been infinitely more Demos than Soldiers. I wish Soldier would win but alas it won't but as of right now Soldiers is up around 100k and winning. I really hope they win so they can get the extra weapon. They need all the help they can get.
