Possible to use 2 network cards in a computer

Just curious if its possible. I use to have them networked together, but I got Sprint Wireless awhile back and the Hybrid modem uses the card. I would like to be able to transfer files back and forth. Not to worried about internet connection on the second computer, its just a test machine that I play with trying different things.

yes, just try and make sure they are different brands so you can tell which is which

Yes, you can have two NICs in one machine... One is for your modem and the other for your network.

If you can put 2 different brands in, do it. I have identical linksys nic's in my pc, and wow did that ever cause me troubles when I installed WinMe. I had everything working fine in win98, but when I upgraded, for some reason it switched the order of my nics around in my network settings. So when I thought I was setting up the nic to the newwork, I was really setting up the nic to my DSL, and vice versa. Yea, it sucked mostly because I'm a moron and stared at the stupid thing for like an hour with out once considering that they were switched from win98.

I had the same problem even though I have 2 different brands of NICs in it. When I installed win98, it could not detect both of my NICs and I had to use driver disks to set them up. Took me quite a while to figure out which one is the current driver for which NIC.

You can tell which NIC is which by the hardware address on the card. Winipcfg (under Win9x) or ipconfig /all can spit out that information, and most cards are labeled with their hardware addresses (or have DOS proggies which will tell you what they are). Set up one card and reboot. Check that Winblows remembers the settings, then check via winipcfg which card has the settings you assigned. Plug that one in, make sure it works, then do the second card.

that works great until something goes wrong, or you change something... and you open up the network neighborhood properties and they have the same name. its just easier to make sure you have either 2 different brands or 2 different kinds of card if they are by the same brand.

Thanks for the replys. I installed the second nic and had no problems. Except, now the second computer has decided it can't find the nic after working good for 2 days. Time for more fussing in the morning.
