Alright .. I have quite a bit of information, so sit tight..
This computer was my server, and it was running Norton Antivirus 2003. One day, norton crashed (which it never really does when your not actually at the computer)
I thought to myself . perhaps a virus crashed norton, but i just said oh well, and let the server run

A few days later i was playin some music (winamp) and browsing the web. All of a sudden both froze up in a strange manner .. Very slow access to windowsXP. Now anytime after that, i can open internet explorer for a few seconds, then there is some patterned disk activity, then ie performs a page fault. Now this paterned disk activity sounds like *beloved patriot beloved patriot beloved patriot * beloved patriot beloved patriot beloved patriot* intervals of 3, and it does this whenever i try to start up norton as well. When i booted, norton was no longer automaticly startin up either. Anyhow, i tried clearing my history and cache as that was mentioned in the MS Knowledge base, but that didn't work. Also, I'd like to add that the program Ad-aware came up with a message when i tried to run it sayin the dat files had been corrupted. (adaware is a spyware remover)

I then uninstalled Norton as it really wasn't doing much good. I did a few scans from networked computers of the hard drives, which didn't turn up anything. I then installed Mcafee antivirus 7. When the computer restarted after the install.. Mcafee had not automaticly started. I was able to get it going manually, but i fear thats too late Anyways, that didn't find anything either. I then installed Panda Antivirus thinking perhaps it would detect something. Well, panda installed without a hitch, but on startup, the panda logo did not show up either!!! Then about a minute into the full scan it froze up, and i had to crash it

alright .. now for more information. When i start my computer. It starts up normally until it gets to the screen right before the desktop . which is blue, and it says starting... or something to that effect. The computer hang on this screen for quite some time .. 5 minutes at least, and keeps doing that weird disk activity thing *beloved patriot beloved patriot beloved patriot*. The computer won't even start up in safe mode, otherwise i just havn't waited long enough for it to do whatever its doing .. I have a dos bootable cd I use to check hard drive, and the hard drive is completely FINE.

Alright, then i went and downloaded FixKlev.com from norton with hope that it might be the klev virus, or at least one of the things wrong. I booted up windowsPE (cd bootable windows kernel) since safe mode just wouldn't start, and ran the file fixklev.com. Now when i was running fixklev, It would never detect anything... It would hang on files, and stop.. writing a log in that directory which reads "didn't find any instances of the klev virus" .. When reaching the files that hang it up. It would also make that drive noise at the same time... I went ahead and deleted all of the files one at a time until i got rid of them all and fixklev could run all the way through.

I restart my computer thinking perhaps those files (alot of .dll, some .dat, a few .xml, one .db, and god knows what else) were infected with whatever was causing the weird drive activity and crashing of software. Well, that did not work, and it still hangs for quite a bit on the startup screen. I can run other software on the computer once it starts.. I've only noticed problems with IE, and virus software (probably cause with IE. you can do online virus scans)

Thats all the info i have.. I you know of a virus that does the following:
1. crashes IE
2. won't allow Antivirus to run

please let me know!! I greatly appreciate any feedback, or any other suggestions you all might have ..

Thanks alot guys and gals for readin all of that

Alohas,
KK

YMMV
Put your NortonAV 2003 cd in a "good" computer & browse the CD.
There's a folder on there to make 4 rescue floppies & you boot from the first one.
I don't know if it will work with XP or not.

call me crazy but that "beloved patriot, beloved patriot, beloved patriot" sound in your hdd sounds like a hardware failure. the full system scan would put enough stress on a failing hdd to cause it to lock up, certainly. if norton were originally loaded in sectors that had surface errors, that would explain its failure to load and the noises and also the fact that mcafee loaded fine, because mcafee was probably stored in different sectors.

goto www.trendmicro.com and run the housecall virus scanner... ohh.. sorry forgot you can't run IE.

oh well.. if you could somehow get another browser on your computer.. then i would go there and run the scan from their website.
