Possible warning on Opty 144/146/148 Etc...

I'm hearing through some sources that AMD is no longer going to be selling the 939 opterons through distribution/retail units anymore. Word is that they don't like these chips being used for anything but servers, so they will ONLY be shipping them directly to System Integrators.

I haven't been able to completely confirm this yet, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up. If you want one of these, and you can find one ANYWHERE (no, I don't have any more available ) then I'd recommend you buy it. Chances are good that you won't see them available anymore.

I'll let you all know when I find out anymore info. As I said, I can't be 100% sure this is true, but it's the rumors I'm hearing from a few suppliers....

I just bought a retail unopened box CABYE 146 0540 FPAW from Ebay about 2 minutes ago. I used the paypal coupon that is floating around that ended up being $22 less than the $240 total buy it now price. So, all said and done, came to $217 shipped. I'll put this one away for safe keeping

Oh yeah, there was one more left out there as of NOW....

Honestly, if I knew for sure that they were going to cut off the supply I would buy a few. For the performance/price it's good to have a backup and you never know when someone will need one...

If you can get a CABYE, the sooner you buy the better as they will surely dry up. Later steps could prove not so good and with the TG's forthcoming info, these will be highly sought after in the enthusiest market...$0.02

I can see why AMD is doing this (can't blame them either). The Green box 939 Opty's would slaughter the Orange box A64 sales if they mass produced them for the retail channel.

If history is any indication, this may happen. AMD's Sempron s939 has been out since April '05, but try to find one for sale... you can't find one anywhere. They're only available to the big box system integrators.

Sempron s939 would have completely and "prematurely" killed s754. Current manufacturers, distributors, and retailers wouldn't have been very appreciative. And, this same group is probably complaining to AMD about the same thing... are certain CPUs going to where they were intended to maximize sales of units already in the pipeline.

Makes sense but 3000's and 3200's are just as good +/- 5% and cheaper.. Good run while it lasted though. I heard from someone at AMD the 165 was also being dropped from the DYI lineup.. confirm?

Yea do it if you can. I'm curious to see if this turns out to be true or not. I still haven't gotten any real word either way so I'm still not sure either. Hopefully it's not, but I guess we'll find out!

I picked up the other one that guy was selling, although I didn't get the coupon code. I eventually got sick of trying to determine which online vendor was selling what steppings/weeks based on forum posts, so I figured paying a bit more for a guaranteed one was worth it especially now that the prices are over $200 everywhere else anyway. Hopefully it will be a good one, although I won't be able to use to its full potential on my current motherboard (will get a DFI in a few weeks). In any case, it will be way better than my current ES unit, which is stuck at 2.2ghz at 1.5v.

You won't be dissapointed. These CABYE 0540's are hitting 2.8-3.0 GHz with low voltage. You'll need excellent cooling however, they will get hot....

Good choice on mb, DFI nF4 :thumbsup:

I don't think the rumor will pan out. Why on earth would AMD release a processor that the DIY/OC crowd would make such good noises about and then smother it like that? You would think they would hoover up the profits...

As far as the SIs, are concerned, if they truly wield such power, it might make sense to start an online campaign of some sort that AMD could later use in its marketing. begging them to keep selling these through Christmas...
