I'm the camp that actually does see AMD wanting to cut off the Socket 939 Opterons to us. Perhaps the problem is that the enthusiasts purchased so many they're receiving complaints about shortages from people who want to use them for servers.

I'm afraid that's exactly what They want you to think..

IMO, I don't think so. The Opteron is a robust chip compared to the rest of the A64 lineup. The memory controllers are quite strong, just shy of FX grade. The 144 is a 1.8 GHz part that has hit 3.2 GHz. That's 1400 MHz OC :Q. Of course all of them don't hit that, however, the average is probably 2.7-2.8 GHz (900 to 1000 MHz). We're talking about $145 retail cpu. The new CAB2E's are hitting 3.0 GHz. The A64's simply can't hold a candle to them.

Typical A64 OC = 400 to 1000 MHz
Typical Opty OC = 600 to 1400 MHz

The closest comparable A64 is the SD3700 which retails at $233. Honestly, I don't know what AMD was thinking when they released these for 939 at the prices they did. Nobody in there right mind would touch an A64 if the course held steady. AMD simply can't afford to produce server grade 939 chips and expect to sell the less stringently tested A64's.

Why they created this scenario is a mystery to me, better chip for less money. Simply doesn't add up. I can see this speculated move happening very easily....

Good post..
I've always thought the problem was in thier having too many damn sockets in the first place.. I mean they should have had one, a 940 the whole time and just disabled pins if they wanted single channel (754) and unregisterd dual (939) and price them accordingly e.g. 940 single Ch < 940 DC < opteron lineups at same speed.. Nevertheless even so when moving to 939 for 1xx Opterons the chips should cost more than desktop counterparts period being cherry picked and slated for rich corporate clients and workstation buyers. Look at Xeons they cost more than 6xx even know some are same chip. And corporate clients PAY the premium w/o skipping a beat. And that's what Opertons and Xeons are designed for, corprate/server/ppowerful work station market withe deeper pockets.. not be be sucked up and replaced thier desktop markert.. So yea AMD makes lots mistakes.

Good thing I saw this thread...

I immediately ordered a boxed 146 from Monarch (Saturday night), wondering if they really have any left in stock. They had a weird problem processing my order (which increased the tension a bit!) Now I just got notified of shipping -- it should be here this Wednesday!

They have since increased their price on Pricewatch (I bought for $196 shipped, now it appears at $208), but it still appears to be in stock. I wonder what steppings they have...

Now I'll have to buy the rest of the comp. Probably DFI Ultra-D, 7800GT, Seasonic S12, Scythe Ninja etc... it'll be fun making this a silent system as well.

good thing i just ordered two, one from tankguys and one from excaliberpc, for me and my brother, i was gonna wait too, seeing as my 3500+ winnie was doing well but seeing the overclock potential of this chip i went for it. had i known they could possible discontinue these i would have snagged a bunch more to sell. i would be surprised though if amd completely eliminated retail sale of these chips, i think we will probably see a price increase from amd's part, now that they know demand for them.

Small Update:

The majority of my distributors are now quoting January as the next available ship date. So, these are likely either discontinued, or are so heavily backordered that once current stocks run out, no more will be available.

I've got nearly 400 on order at different places, so we *should* be one of the first to get the next shipment, when/if they come.

Thanks for the update! Not good news. I'll be selling my CABYE 0540 Opty 148 (unopened) when I get back from DC.

Remember that this is Thanksgiving week, which is traditionally the time inventories are at their lowest during the year...

True, but how many of you guys are buying these as gifts for people

I'm hoping it's just an inventory crunch, but as of right now, there are 0 available anywhere, at any of the major distributors. We're first in line at most of them for the next shipment, but some are saying it won't even be until January, if ever.

How many preorders on the 146's/148's do you have Tank? I might have to get me a couple of more.

None anymore, and we aren't taking any until we have more in stock... when/if we get more anyway

I don't believe AMD will cut its' own throat. At the very least, they should price these cpu's properly. At least this would give the buyer a chance to get one through a reatil shop....

Maybe they are re-evaluating the situation and are thinking a new pricing strategy...who really knows for sure...

Oh, and I just got my 146 from TG today....woot , thanks TG

I agree... the whole thing doesn't make much sense, but I can tell you these are all but impossible to find ANYWHERE now (in the distribution channel I mean). I've got backlogs at every distributor (well, not with Bell Micro, I hate thier website ). However, we're backordered at Ingram Micro, Tech Data, ASI, Synnex, and DandH. Not a single one has any available, and none know when/if they will get more. Two of them are saying it will be January at the earliest.

So maybe they won't be discontinued, maybe it's just that supply is so tight, there won't be any new shipments for quite a while. I'm still not sure of the reason, all I know is I can't find 'em anywhere!

hmm...

how come places like monarch still have them in stock? they're not priced too badly at least for the 148's.

neweggs got them.
zzf got them.
mwave's got them.

seems like they've had them for a 'lil bit now. surprised they aren't out of stock yet.

any ideas as to how these e-tailers still have them?

I haven't even tried for 148's frankly (very few requests). It could be that there are still some floating around, or that they bought in very large quantities in the first place. It could also be that demand on them isn't enough to have depleted the original stock.

very good point.

but at least for now the OEM 148's cost about the same as an OEM 146!!!

at least a monarch

the 148 OEM is $207ish
the 146 OEM is $201ish while retail is $203ish.

The prices on those retail 146's kills me. MY wholesale cost was between $142-155 for those units... man, if we price gouged like those other stores, I could have bought a few cars with those profits :Q

That being said, don't expect prices to drop soon. I've got a few *possible* suppliers on the line now, but my cost just to buy them in the first place has skyrocketed to $170+ now. So even if I do get some more in, our price is going to start approaching that of Monarch, ZZF, et al... though not by choice.

yeah. i don't blame you guys for having to charge more.

supply and demand right?

well if the price of the 146's are approaching those of the 148's... how come not place orders for the 148's?

just a question now that you mention it.

I was considering buying the 148 aswell. I just don't want to end up with a cabage. Is Monarch reliable? Anyone order a 148 from them and what stepping did they get?

Also what is a good cheap fan for opteron equivalent to atleast the processor retail fan?
