I'm afraid that's exactly what They want you to think..
IMO, I don't think so. The Opteron is a robust chip compared to the rest of the A64 lineup. The memory controllers are quite strong, just shy of FX grade. The 144 is a 1.8 GHz part that has hit 3.2 GHz. That's 1400 MHz OC :Q. Of course all of them don't hit that, however, the average is probably 2.7-2.8 GHz (900 to 1000 MHz). We're talking about $145 retail cpu. The new CAB2E's are hitting 3.0 GHz. The A64's simply can't hold a candle to them.
Typical A64 OC = 400 to 1000 MHz
Typical Opty OC = 600 to 1400 MHz
The closest comparable A64 is the SD3700 which retails at $233. Honestly, I don't know what AMD was thinking when they released these for 939 at the prices they did. Nobody in there right mind would touch an A64 if the course held steady. AMD simply can't afford to produce server grade 939 chips and expect to sell the less stringently tested A64's.
Why they created this scenario is a mystery to me, better chip for less money. Simply doesn't add up. I can see this speculated move happening very easily....

True, but how many of you guys are buying these as gifts for people
I'm hoping it's just an inventory crunch, but as of right now, there are 0 available anywhere, at any of the major distributors. We're first in line at most of them for the next shipment, but some are saying it won't even be until January, if ever.

How many preorders on the 146's/148's do you have Tank? I might have to get me a couple of more.

I don't believe AMD will cut its' own throat. At the very least, they should price these cpu's properly. At least this would give the buyer a chance to get one through a reatil shop....

I agree... the whole thing doesn't make much sense, but I can tell you these are all but impossible to find ANYWHERE now (in the distribution channel I mean). I've got backlogs at every distributor (well, not with Bell Micro, I hate thier website ). However, we're backordered at Ingram Micro, Tech Data, ASI, Synnex, and DandH. Not a single one has any available, and none know when/if they will get more. Two of them are saying it will be January at the earliest.
So maybe they won't be discontinued, maybe it's just that supply is so tight, there won't be any new shipments for quite a while. I'm still not sure of the reason, all I know is I can't find 'em anywhere!

I haven't even tried for 148's frankly (very few requests). It could be that there are still some floating around, or that they bought in very large quantities in the first place. It could also be that demand on them isn't enough to have depleted the original stock.

at least a monarch
the 148 OEM is $207ish
the 146 OEM is $201ish while retail is $203ish.

The prices on those retail 146's kills me. MY wholesale cost was between $142-155 for those units... man, if we price gouged like those other stores, I could have bought a few cars with those profits :Q
That being said, don't expect prices to drop soon. I've got a few *possible* suppliers on the line now, but my cost just to buy them in the first place has skyrocketed to $170+ now. So even if I do get some more in, our price is going to start approaching that of Monarch, ZZF, et al... though not by choice.

I was considering buying the 148 aswell. I just don't want to end up with a cabage. Is Monarch reliable? Anyone order a 148 from them and what stepping did they get?
