FWIW, I received my 148 from Newegg yesterday and it is a CABYE stepping. It was a retail CPU. I haven't installed or tested it out yet.

Hmm decisions decisions. I found a site online that has the 146 retail in stock for $181. I know people are getting good steppings at newegg but it is $50 more there.......

Same? according to his post & prices elsewhere the 148 is more expensive.
Assuming the 146 is significantly cheaper (as above) I'd go for the 146.

To order or not to order.....I hate this...wait too long and they are gone.

It seems the mailboc (voicemail) at Monarch is full...I think everyone is trying to find out if they have anymore opyt's and what stepping they are...

I guess I'll find out on Monday if they really have any 146's left as I placed an order.

I ordered my second Opterorn 148 Wensday from Monarch and it is here in Phoenix, not bad on the shipping with the holiday and all.

I placed an order for a 2nd Opteron 148 on Wednesday, but they sent me a email saying that my alternate ship to wasn't on file with the credit card company. I called the cc company and they said it was! I called and emailed all day yesterday since I received my email yesterday am, but their mailbox was full. So I said "screw it" and sent an email response to cancel it. Even though they didn't respond to my email saying call my cc company again, they did acknowledge my cancellation request and cancelled the order?!

Anyways, my decision that I didn't need a 2nd Opty lasted a whole 2 hours and I ordered another one last night. Rather than going back and forth on the alternate ship to address (and possibly have them run out of them), I just used my billing address. Got my "sent to warehouse" email this morning

They had one last batch of CABYE 0540s at tankguys yesterday, but I didn't open my mouth or post about it so it wouldn't sell out before I had a chance to get it later on in the day. Needless to say, it sold out in less than an hour.

I don't know where the top is. I have stopped there because load temps are bumping 48C (my limit) with an XP-90/AS5 ussing OCCT. Games run about 45C max. This is hands down the best cpu I've ever owned....

I use a GSkill memory kit (2x1GB) 2GBZX that is very forgiving and performs well with these San Diego core cpu's. Much, much more forgiving than my prior Mushkin TCC5.

lol. I'm reading your post on the ZX right now @ XS.

[threadhijack]

I'm a bit skeptical about their quality though. Someone said they were cheap heatspreaders and poor quality RAM.

My next choice would be the $240 Mushkin, but that's $50 more.

The ram looks as nice as any I've seen, very good physical quality. Who exactly said they looked bad? Link please? Is DDR520 @ 3-3-2-5-1T @ 2.8v @ $185 for 2x1GB not good...hmmmm  It's plenty good for me, I've never ever cared about benchmamrks and to gain a few frames is clearly not a reason to spend my hard earned.

I got burned by Mushkin on my last ram, I will not buy from them ever again. I had a Mushkin rep tell me I had a credibilty issue in a public forum, the same one that lied to me before a purchase. Fcku Mushkin....

Yes Avalon, I may go a little higher, 50C is my limit though. I don't really want to spend any cash on cooling just to gain a few frames. I'm pretty content right now I also like quiet computing

Huh? How would that Mushkin rep know about you and your credibilty based on a forum? Are you famous? lol

Long story and far from famous, LOL. The rep led me to believe I was buying TCCD when in fact it turned out to be TCC5 that was a crap performer (verified by pulling the heatspreader after becoming suspicious).

Man, I wanted to jump on that G. Skill like yesterday, and now its sold out. I'll just get a decent 512x2 and upgrade to 2gb later.

Just got two of the three 146's I ordered and I must have done something good last week because both turned out to be CABYE 0540's. The first one I tried (FPBW) primed for 8+ hours at 2.8GHz@1.39V and, with very little tweaking, is SuperPi 32M and game stable at 3.05GHz@1.49V. I'll have to fine tune things and see if I can get it Prime stable at those speeds. Load temps were ~39C. This thing definetely runs hotter than my 3700+ SD. It loaded at the same temp only @1.65V.

I'll test the other CABYE 0540 FPAW and a CAB2E 0540 in the next couple weeks and post results.

Retail or OEM? Monarch or Newegg?

The CABYE 0540 FPBW was a retail chip from Monarch.
The CABYE 0540 FPAW was a retail chip from ExcaliberPC.
The CAB2E 0540 is an OEM chip I believe from Tank Guys.

I purchased all of the chips sometime the week before last.

I just got my second 148 Opteron from Monarch computers, stepping: CABYE 0540 FPBW. The first 148 is in my Asus(same stepping)box in my sig and runs 2.8GHz on stock voltage, no tweaking involved. It runs 31-33 idle and 39-42 gaming and under full load. Both of my processors were retail and I ordered two weeks apart. Voltage is 1.35.

I'm sweating out the load...I didn't receive any shipping info today. On the bright side, I didn't receive any out-of-stock notifications either.
