When will you guys know for sure if AMD is going to stop supplying Opterons to retail channels?

That's the million dollar question It sounds like more may be shipping for January but no guarantees so it'll prolly be January before we hear unless there is an "official" announcement (doubtful).

btw: this is my experience regarding opterons on the german market
u cant buy a 144 anywhere. preorder prices are around 110-115Eur, shipping dates are mid January in a trusty shop.
146 is about 145-150Eur, but only a few shops have them in stock and they want up to 200Eur.
148, same situation.
165 (305-310Eur), 170 (390Eur) are in stock in alot of stores.

Same as before, pretty much all my distributors are saying January. I *may* have sourced a new supplier, but it would be very spotty supply, and my price will be a lot higher, as I'd be paying a lot more. I don't know when/if that source will dry up either. I don't expect it to last long though

Have you heard anything else in regards to AMD stopping the supply? Is it mainly that the demand is so great that they aren't keeping up with it?

Absolutely not! My neice wanted that board and an Opteron 146. The 146 could clock to 2.85GHz on air on a A8N32-SLI, but the Asrock board limited it to 2.33GHz stable with 1T MA, and boards max HTT limited it to 2.74GHz 2T MA.

As for this rumor, it may be true for the Opteron 146 & 165, but it will be a cold day in hell before I believe there will be no more Opteron 150/152s and 175/180s available to the open market.

UPDATE:

I just got off the phone with one of my distributor reps, and he said he spoke with an AMD field rep about the 1XX opterons.

He said the AMD guy told him that there will indeed be no more shipments through retailers or distributors. Only full systems integrators will get them from now on, for us in pre-built high end server configurations.

The reasoning, so the story goes, is that AMD is pushing for the deliniation between product lines, and they want A64's filling the desktop role, and Opterons filling the server role, PERIOD. Thus, they will only ship to parties who plan to build the opterons into actual servers.

While this still confuses me (i.e. if you want them as servers, why release on the 939 platform?) it's the best information I have up to this point, and does explain why *none* of the distributors have anymore of these, and why thier previously scheduled shipments have failed to appear.

I still can't say for absolute sure that this is definitely going to happen, but all signs are pointing that way now. I'll keep you guys up to date when/if I hear more as well.

Well, I should have gotten mine today, as the package arrived at the local USPS office early in the morning, but I didn't for some reason, probably some delay due to the thanksgiving rush. Guess I'll have to have until Friday now.

I can't believe it!:Q TWO impulse buys in a row that actually worked in my favor. These were based on a hunch that Opterons were gonna become scarce. First I ordered a 165 from Monarch before they came back in stock and before they jumped $45 in price. Today, I ordered an OEM 148 with 3yr warranty from Monarch and they actually shipped today! Usually, my impulse buys end up sitting on the shelf after I see something better and I have a garage sale to recoup approx. 65% of my original outlay.

I think I'm gonna buy a lottery ticket today

Yah seriously. I got an extra processor I needed because of your post...and just in time it would seem I really owe you for that one.

If this is true the chips will still exist in the gray market for a while. I'm working on more details.

Ok ok..... this is killing me. I was waiting to get a motherboard/cpu in January but I might as well get the opteron now. Which should I get?
146 oem from monarch for $201
148 oem from monarch for $201
148 retail from monarch for $241
148 retail from newegg for $235

I kind of wonder if the better steppings on the oem chips are picked over.

If you're ok for OEM go for the 148. Same price, higher multiplier
If you're going for retail (3 years warranty), then which ever company you prefer

Of course, if you're overclocking the retail warranty doesn't matter
Don't know if the warranty from Monarch is any different, but I got the OEM with their warranty. I just might order another in a few minutes.

Who here is actually buying an Opteron and not planning on overclocking it? lol, we (and XS) are probably the reason AMD is deciding to sell to system integrators only.

I didn't throw in the OC statement because of ethical reasons/arguements which would surely rise.

So what you are saying is that the 146 and the 148 are basically the same chip. The 148 just has a 11x multiplier and the 146 has a 10x multiplier. In that case I should go with the cheaper one. I do like the idea of the retail instead of the oem since no one can pick through the steppings of the chip. No actually the stepping is visible from the outside now isnt it?

Yes, the stepping is visible. I'd pick the 148 as it simply costs the same as the 146, but does have the higher multiplier (kinda silly if you ask me )
