This is my first hot deal, but I've been lurking here for quite some time now. Here goes:

I got a call from AT&T Broadband the other day and the CSR offered me local telephone service (one line) for $12.95/mo with free activation and installation, free first month service, two free months of voicemail, and the kicker: a free $50 AMEX gift check. Unfortunately I was headed out when she called, so I couldn't get more info on the free $50 AMEX gift check. I looked at their website, but I didn't see anything about the $50 (everything else was there though). Perhaps this might be interesting to someone.

Edit: I'm pretty sure this is their digital phone service, and you can look for yourself at AT&T Broadband . There's still no mention of the $50 AMEX thing, but I'll probably call later to find out more.

A buddy got service from ATT over cable last year. Best part is, he was just going thru bogus billing hassle with local telco who was basically telling him do it our way or no phone for you @sshole.
So he said, ok I don't want your service, *&^% you.

This is a HOT DEAL, especially if you have dial-up net access.

I have had this service for about 9 months and the savings are huge. Basically we were paying like $32 for local serivce (2-lines with call waiting), plus calls, so with each dialup call costing like 3.5 cents we were ringing up $80 in local service, plus $5.00 for long distance plus calls (at 10 cents a minuet). Then we switched to ATT digital over our coax broadband line. Now for the same $32 we get unlimited local calls, callerID, and call waiting, plus the $5.00 service fee for ATT long distance was waived. Then they additionally offered us long distance at 7 cents a minuet with the option of adding monthly minuet packages of 180 or 300 minuets at 4 cents a minuet.

Basically our phone bill went from $85 plus long distance charges at 10 cents/min to about $45 with 300 minuets of long distance.

Now we only pay 25% of what we did before, and it seems to work just fine, no problems.

Installation was free. They added the second line to all our jacks, and fixed my dad's bad crosswiring job when he added a jack for the dish for free. And then a month or so later my mom called them back and asked them to install 2 more jacks for my sister and brother, and they did that free too.

Over all great service, and a great deal. We haven't seen any drop in the quality of our phones either.
And we do not have ATT cable or broadband internet access either. Just digital phones.

Third party local phone service is not a good idea for anyone with (or considering) DSL. It almost never works for various reasons..

Unless you got an old school DSL install like I do that uses it's own pair. But I agree - people with DSL shared on their main phone line generally can't change telcos (local area, not long distance, etc).

This isn't third party service. This is using your TV cable line (owned & operated by AT&T broadband) for your local phone connection. Your local phone company is left completely out of the loop.

I currently have this, and I thought I should warn people about a couple of issues.

First of all, I was an early adoptor. At first we had a lot of problems with getting disconnected in the middle of a conversation for no good reason. It seems to have gotten better recently, though. I haven't noticed this problem for months now, but YMMV.

Also, when they send someone to connect the cable line to your house's phone wiring, make sure you are around
to watch what they're doing. I wasn't, and the idiot who installed it ran a TV cable 2/3 of the way around the
outside of my house in order to get from the cable tap to the phone tap. It looks like hell. If your cable and
phone enter the house at about the same point, you shouldn't have to worry about this.

Also FYI if you subscribe to 2 or more AT&T Broadband services (High speed internet, digital phone, or digital cable TV) you get a $5 discount on each bill every month.

I just got the AT&T digital phone installed. I have been using my cell phone as my only phone. ATT gave me a $25 credit for taking a new phone number from them. He just spliced the cable inside the house and plugged it into there box, then I plugged the phone into the box and it works great. I have "issues" with qwest and I hope ATT puts them out of business! I think its a great deal!

<< Does AT&T Digital phone line work with the dial-up access using the 56k modem? >>

Don't know. But if you have AT&T, why don't you just shell out $35/mo. for their broadband internet service?
It's much better than dialup, and doesn't tie up your "phone line".

Thier broadband service has been great, even after the "break up" with @home.
I can't stand using dialup any more.

To get this you have to have a certain cable provider or something?
We have adelphia cable here, and I dont want to get their digital service and broadband because I've heard they suck.

This deal is getting hotter. AT&T called me for the fifth time in five days (5/5) and offered their digital phone service. The CSR again offered the $50 in AMEX gift checks, and this time said that my rate for monthly service could go as low as $4.00 /mo. if my income qualified. I asked about that and she said that a single income household under $18,000 qualifies. That probably doesn't apply to a lot of people, but it helps. They gave me a number to call when I wanted to sign up: 1-800-742-5288. Good luck all.
