I'm trying to think of a good one, but generally I don't love shows that there's even one character that I can't stand (if they're pretty heavily involved character that is).
Arrested Development is a weird show, as I find both Jason Bateman and Michael Cera to be not entertaining in pretty much everything, and so you'd think combining those two (both playing what seems to be their typical irritatingly bumbling nice guy characters, which is one of the reasons I find them annoying often as that is often an annoying character), and with the cast around them, that I'd absolutely hate them. But somehow they work.
Ahhhh Andrea from TWD was awful! Way too much screen time for a useless character. It's not like she was an Umbridge, who was purposely written so that you'd hate her, it was just bad writing.
I wish they'd have given George R.R. Martin control of the show for like one season just so he'd fucking kill every character in the worst way possible. They're pretty much all insufferable. Even the ones I want to like are when they do those shitty bottle episodes focused around one character, that is pretty much not adding any more insight so its just a clear "we need filler".
I've really started to hate Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys in the last couple of seasons and i liked the character at first.
Most of the characters on that show have become grating when it was brought back. The first what 6-7 seasons were fun (if wonky at times), but once Netflix revived it they're just off (its watchable and even enjoyable at times still but just lacks the weird cohesive organic zaniness that made it fun). Weird thing is, one or two of the movies from after it was brought back (Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys? And I feel like there was another one, but not Swearnet which I thought was possibly the worst of all of them) were actually more fun like the earlier stuff. The live ones were mostly crap too (the one in Austin was ok, but the Xmas one and the actual live part of the Ireland one were both pretty bad).
Oh and then the Swearnet show (there was like a 5 episode run) was a mixed bag. I think I might actually like it more than the newer TPB episodes, but it is still just wonky.
Always Sunny in Philadelphia: All characters except maybe Charlie
Trailer Park Boys: All characters except Bubbles
Weird. I can kinda see that, but also kinda can't, as I think for me, those would be the characters I'd find more annoying later on in those shows.
That's a show where it's very easy to hate every one of the characters. Much like Married with Children. Not a single one adds (or, if they never existed) subtracts anything from a show full of other disgusting human beings.
Really? I mean, yes they're supposed to be reprehensible, that's the point/appeal. Of course its more than that (as there's plenty of shows full of reprehensible/unlikeable people), but still.
They are all necessary. I love the use of the characters and think the actors are great.
I just hate the characters. They are all more or less bad people.
I'd agree. I'm not saying they wouldn't work (with Always Sunny some think it actually became worse with Frank, and Ted McGinley I think was a great addition, even though I liked the original Mr Darcy too), but I feel like they all individually add quite a bit. Plus, I think its important for the ensembles to not screw with the balance too much when they've been on for so long, as the longer they're on, the more they individually become caricatures of themselves, and that often makes them annoying, so if you don't play them off each other as much it becomes a lot more evident. I think that's why shows that have been revived often fall flat pretty badly, as they're basically trying to concentrate all the aspects that people liked about each character.
