I'm guessing that this is lumped under the "Microsoft Office" catch since no one has mentioned it yet, but incase you haven't heard of it, download accelerator is an awesome program. Doubles or triples (or even more) download speed, allows you to resume broken connections, can be scheduled and more. Check it out . Its only a 1 meg d-load too.HERE

There is no such program that would double or every triple (!!!) your download speed. If you have a 512kbit connection that is a maximum
of 64kB/s. So if you're downloading @ 60kB, download accelerator should get you 120 or even 180kB/s. But that IS impossible since your ISP
limits you to 64. If what you are saying was true then people should be getting 24kB/s on single-channel ISDN. Plus, download speeds depend
on network conditions of your ISP and the server you're downloading from. Besides resuming, scheduling, segmented downloading etc. (which is great),
download accelerators won't help you increase your speed by much. Unless if ofcourse you go and download a .txt file with a modem that supports
compression .

There is something I've been wondering about. I tried out StrokeIt and it's a great program and has already replaced my quick-launch, but I need
something that would allow me do similar things (launch a program) with keyboard combinations (key+# or sth like that). Anyone knows of a such program??

Not sure on the intracasies (sp?) of DSL connections, but I share a 768 (or is it 786) connection with 3 other computers. Even without sharing, the highest I should be able to d-load at is 78.6kbs, yet I've been over 100 before with download accelerator. Also, when I said double or triple, sometimes I will download a file using explorer at about 15kbs, but with Download accelerator, it moves at 40kbs. Don't knock it till you try it.

Glass 2K: Makes windows transparent in Win2000 and WinXP.

QFixApp. "Unsupported" Microsoft tool for getting legacy programs to work in WinXP. Install by running ACT20.EXE found on the XP Pro disk (look in SUPPORT\TOOLS). After installation look in Start\Application Compatibilty Toolkit (you must be logged in as an administrator to see and use this).

For me it's because it's more flexible in terms of skins and play lists. Plus there's much more support for Winamp than there is for Windows Media Player. In addition you can add in plug ins as well.

This isn't free but it fills a need and works great for me. Internet Call Manager. It catches your calls while you're online with a dialup modem and displays the caller's name and number even if you don't have caller ID. Allows you to answer, ignore, or send to voice mail.

Love this thread. I can't decide on which gnutella program to try. Sounds like they all have some degree of spyware in them.

The biggest benefit for me with Winamp is that it has an extremely small footprint. At work I run applications that put a tremendous strain on my machine's resources (XP1900+, 1 GB DDR, 105 GB RAID array). Winamp only takes up about 1.5MB of RAM while running. WMP uses almost 10MB. Believe it or not, I need all the extra power I can get. Winamp is also a much simpler interface. Whatever works for you is best though. Good luck. Hope I helped.

I must 2nd the notion of Irfanview. I use this program all the time. Sick of those big .bmp files? Have Irfanview convert them into smaller .jpeg's or .gif's without loosing any quality. Just a great program. Can even convert a large amount of files all at once. Nice Nice....

Musicmatch, MBM have been mentioned...

When I'm not feeling so lasy maybe I'll think of some more

internet call manager is awesome, in conception at least. thanks. but . . . is there a freeware version anywhere in the world ?
internet cal manager requires your credit crard information before you can download the software, which imho sucks. ruins a
great possibility.

taken from another tread I posted a while ago:

freeware form filler and ad-ware/spy-ware destroyer

I've been using Gator for a while and for some reason it took me until today to realize how TERRIBLE it is. Just doing a quick search on form fillers I found roboform. This thing ROCKS, and it isn't adware or sypware like Gator. Anyhoo, here's the link to where I found some useful information.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a form filler

post from another forum about roboform

link to the ad-ware and spy-ware removal software.

Enjoy!

convert, by Josh Madison. Converts most units of measure to most other units of measure. Science and engineering applications spring to mind. I used it today to convert horsepower to kilowatts, for example.
