Yes, this rocks indeed. There are numerous hacks for the forum at wbbhacks.com (free).

download accelerator thingy.....

2 ways they can improve your speed

1. your dling a file at 30k on your 768down dsl line. if you find mirrors of the file it'll "split" up the file and dl parts off each mirror and then put them together when its done. So if you get 30 to that one server and 20 to 2 other servers... 70k vs 30k

2. you'r dling a file at 20k on yer 768down dsl... its 20k cause the server limits connections to 20k. So the programmy will make a bunch of connections to the server each getting 20k and you end up with uyoru full ~90k down

only time i ever use this type of program is dling linux isos.... i can never find a server i get more than 30k to, but put the iso name in and it'll find 20 mirorrs and start dling off 10 of them and my ttal down then is = to my dsl's down and i save a few hours of dling

Well, I'm all for clearing out the useless garbage left behind by a fresh OS install, and the junk that software installations & uninstallations leave behind, so here's my personal favorites:

Clean System Directory Clears all the useless DLLs from the system directory allowing for faster program access. NOT FOR WINDOWS ME, NT, 2000, OR NEWER! If it should choose to remove a DLL that was needed by any program, it's easy to restore, as long as you don't delete 'em!!!

Easy Cleaner v1.7f Clears out pointless registry entries and excess useless garbage. WinME users will need to take note that Easy Cleaner may remove a file it perhaps shouldn't have. If so, Toniarts provides a replacement.

RegClean 4.1a Microsoft's registry cleaner, will also repair invalid entries (limited).

AdAware v5.62 Spyware removal tool. And don't forget the RefUpdate (auto referencefile updater for AdAware) located on the same page.

Xteq's X-Setup Tweak your heart out!

TweakUI v1.33 More tweaks!!

Adenix's S.M.A.R.T. Indicator Enables Windows S.M.A.R.T. display capabilities, to see how your drives are doing.....

Ultimate Boot Disk Diagnosing boot problems + all-purpose boot tool

Power Defrag v2.10 beta 2 for everyone with an older OS, where defrag takes FOREVER!!!!! WindowsME defrag tool is fast enough, IMO.....

Those are just a few that I really like -kd5-

I'll second the recommendation for FinePrint. I'm a college student and thus I'm always printing stuff for classes. This program lets me print 2 pages on each side of a page (it can do up to 8 per side if you want). With double sided printing I have 4 pages for every sheet, which is really great for keeping my binders from getting too thick. Lots of printer drivers do this already but FinePrint gives you more control so the pages look clean and readable.

Another cool program is BreezeBrowser which a lot of photographers recommend to automatically create HTML photo albums from pictures.

<< Google Toolbaris indispensible. CookieWall works well. (cant get it to link) >>

Google toolbar is great but, Dave's Quick Search Toolbar Desktop is better does what google bar does and:

[*]Look up phone numbers and email by using # or @ ("Piper Smith (Ithaca, NY)#", "Bob Jones@").
[*]Translate between English and other languages (en, zh, fr, de, it, ja, ko, pt, es) by saying "some words en-es".
[*]Convert between currencies by saying "100 usd>gbp".
[*]Calculate math expressions by just typing them in <NOBR>("4*(pi-3)", <WBR>"pow(1.06,30)").</NOBR>
[*]A clock shows after a few seconds. Right-click to see a calendar.

and is GPL and easy to modify/update, try it!

Surprised no1 mentioned StartupCop.

When Windows starts up, it automatically launches a number of programs for you. Some of these come from the Startup folder. Windows also looks in six other locations for files that should be launched at startup. Startup Cop helps you handle problems with programs that are automatically launched at startup by listing them and letting you disable, enable, or delete them. You can save the list of programs that are currently enabled or disabled as a profile that can be restored at a later time. Startup Cop was written by Neil J. Rubenking, and first appeared in PC Magazine April 20, 1999.

Excellent freeware appage: Star Downloader.

Quote from a respected user:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Accelerated Downloads

By splitting the files into several parts and downloading them at the same time you save time. In some cases the acceleration can be several hundreds per cent.

Dynamic Mirror Search

Alternative servers for your requested files are found and the fastest ones for your location are selected.

Built in Learning Process

The more you use the program, the faster it will download! This is made possible thanks to advanced algorithms using previous statistics.

Browser Integration

If you want, the program can detect clicks on certain file types in the most common browsers and automatically handle the downloads for you.

Advanced Scheduler

For modem users it can be very useful to have your downloads started and stopped at certain times. No problem - you decide when and what will be downloaded!

Virus Checking

Just specify the path to your virus checker and everything downloaded will pass through it to weed out any nasty virus...

All of this in a ~900KB dl, free, no ads, no spyware programme.

You've got that right! I can't even count how many times I use that a day.

heh.. I usually install it on other people's computers.

I finally snagged StarDownloader.. very nice! And of course everyone uses it, but Winamp rocks, especially with shoutcast (streaming music for those who haven't tried it... whoot!)
