My C drive (which pretty much is the OS drive, since all the data is in another drive) lost about 25 GIGS of "stuff" after I ran the JPowerTools and installed some programs I didn't use and cleaned up the startup folders (THANK YOU!). However, I don't really think it took THAT many gigs. Is there a spyware program that hogs up your drive space? I kept looking and looking and couldn't find what was taking up so much space (by searching by size, all files 5 megs or larger).

E-Prompter: E-mail client that can check your pop mailboxes, AOL, and web accounts (Hotmail, Yahoo, Netscape, Earthlink, email.com, Juno, MSN, and hundreds of others). They have great e-mail tech support, too. Very compact program that allows for scheduling, as well as support of an address book.

Roboform: Password manager. Just like Gator, but without the spyware.

StartUpCPL: Ever notice how there's no MSConfig in Win2K? This program takes care of all your startup options and more.

Rebate Rebate!: Mail-In-Rebate Tracking Database. Thanks to the guys on Anand's Hot Deals forum.

Bask: Synchronization/Backup/Restore Utility

PathCopy: (Search Google for "pathc300"): Allows you to quickly copy the short or long filename or path of a file to the clipboard through use of the right-click menu.

Tweakui (Find on Google): From MS. Lots of cool tweaks.

Hello all,

My roommate and I finally got sick of all the AIM vs. Trillian battles and all of the code bloat that's occurred in these huge chat clients and decided to write our own chat service with an all new server and an all new client. This project has now been underway for 5 months, and we've got quite a bit to show. Not only do we have all the basic functionality, we have some super-cool features like handy macros that you can define to cut down on typing, and a detached mode where you can remain talking to your buddies even if the server goes down.

The ultimate advantage to being involved is that you get to help us shape the future of this service through your suggestions. We're very active right now in development and very responsive, and are just looking for some help with testing and thinking about new things to add, and what features should be added first. (Plus the normal bug fixes.) Especially features that don't yet exist in any chat services, we have a couple of good ideas up our sleeves.

The web site for the project is http://www.bitwisechat.com/. You can sign up for an account right on the web site and download the program and log in! Please bear in mind we are college students and don't man the terminals 24/7, but we'll respond ASAP to any requests or emails. So grab a few friends, have them sign up, and give it a try! Who knows, it may just be the next big thing.

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

Here is a couple of my favorites:

DBpowerAmp - Multipurpose Audio Encoder, Ripper, etc.
The Font Thing - Neat program that allows you to install, uninstall, view, etc. fonts (sorry, Win95, 98, NT4)
Tag & Rename - Great program but only 30 day trial version

Thats all, the rest of the stuff I use was already mentioned.

I haven't bothered to read through the multiple pages of this thread, so I hope this hasn't already been mentioned...but here's something you might find interesting...

PageDefrag : Lets you see how fragmented your paging files and also how your registry hives are, and to defragment them. I have it so that it defrags everytime the system boots up, it only takes like 3 seconds to complete, but it's a cool way to keep things tidy, I suppose.

That sysinternals website also has a lot more freeware stuff that I haven't bothered to look through, but could be useful.

I just found these two today: VidRes , the program allows you to easily change you resolution (nothing special). But you can also create shortcuts on the desktop to change resolution, or change resolution and execute a certain program.

MultiRes - This programs sits in the system tray and you and right click it and very easily change your resolution.

Faber Toys

Faber Toys is a system utility, mainly developed for power users who want to know what's going on in their Personal Computer. It may also be used by programmers as a tool for tracking their applications.

This is an awesome program and is totally free and I have e-mailed him and he is working on a new version and he knows he spelled "Dependencies" wrong but don't let that stop you. This is by far the best free power user program I have used. It shows system apps that are running, the files they depend on to run, you can hex edit anything, you can move your Start button to the middle of your screen if you want to, you name it. If you are a tweak geek you cannot pass this up.

Well, I'm not about to look through the whole list so sorry if I repost something, but here are my personal favorites:

VIM (Vi IMproved) - Best text editor out there IMO, runs on almost every OS known to man.
Trillian - Excellent IM client.
WinAmp / XMMS - My favorite audio player.
Dev C++ - Free IDE and compiler for the C and C++ languages
Maguma PHP Editor - nice php IDE..

Theres a bunch more but I forget off of the top of my head...

DO NOT INSTALL SWAPNUT! I just read this thread and in installed a couple of the apps. Swapnut has spyware!

From cexx.org:

WNAD.EXE - secretly installed background task that goes online to transmit personal information and display stealth popup ads. Installed by the "Yo Mamma, Osama" game from TwistedHumor.com, as well as the SwapNut file sharing utility.

regarding the last post, do you think that is legal? they do not have clonecd there anymore, but they have windvd. it looks kinda sketch, cuz windvd is retail software and the one on jumpa.com says "modified". in other words, are they reverse-engineering the software to make it technically "free". not a crap but just a thought.

EDIT: after downloading windvd, here is what the accompanying readme says:

"Hi, Thanks for your support!

Once receiving your registered information (system ID, Name, Company, password) of our software "DVDCutter Stream and Mp3CDWav Converter" via email, we will send you an email with unzip password quickly!
Think of it, you just pay one software (our product) to us,What you will achieve are 12 or more (We'll add much more valuable software often into this Free Download Area) great software, a marvellous bargain, isn't it? Wise guy, don't hesitate
to get the big Gift belonging to you!

Have a good day!"

unless these dudes are rich i would say there is a risk of them just using a keygen to give you this software once you buy their product. i hope i am wrong.

PopUpCop is an excellent Popup supressor. It's VERY customizable and works like a charm. It's for IE5 and up.

Pluses - Works, works, works.

Minues - Free for 30 days - Then $20

I liked it so much I paid for 2 licenses. Worth a try, makes a HUGE difference to me.

MailWasher - A neat utility which allows you to bounce spam emails so it looks like your email is not a valid address. I used to get 5 spam emails a day. Now I get 1 or 2 a week.

Some stuff I always use and usually have accessible from the Tray, ALL freeware:

Printnow You hit PrtScn and send your screenshot to your printer.
Multires So easy to use, always in my Startup, instant resolution changer, refresh rate setter/checker, display properties access.
Metapad - A good text editor, much better than Notepad.
Motherboard Monitor From Windows you can access info normally only seen in your BIOS such as CPU temp, MB temps, fan speeds, etc. etc. Very configurable, multi-interfaced.
CPU Info - Tells you about your CPU.
Atomtime 95 Check your computer's clock against the atomic clock in Boulder, CO and optionally reset your clock. Newer version has improvements but this one is freeware and will probably work for you according to the download site.
EndItAll - Shuts down all your processes that you can do without, mainly (for me so far) for app installations.
Zonealarm 2.6 - Firewall! Well, I installed it today. Seems to be doing a good job and can't beat the price - free.

Note: CamStudio extolled a little higher in this thread looks to be really cool! Dig: It's freeware, too.
