That's the crater left by Ivy Mile:

The circular structure you see here is nick named Cactus Dome and it's where all the radioactive contaminated soil and debris from the numerous tests on the islands was buried. After this the US claimed the islands were safe to return to in 1980 but this has been disputed and legal settlements have been reached:

Coincedence that the swath image of the actual Ivy Mike test location (and the former location of the island) is only in fairly poor resolution?

Hmm didn't notice that, nice find. Could be a reason for it but my guess is that it's a coincidence. The "high resolution" stuff of the rest of the atoll isn't really that good and I would imagine that any sensitive stuff would have been carted away years ago. All there is to see is the hole and even at the high resolution you wouldn't get to see much.

Was browsing the Aleutian islands when I came cross these snowed in airstrips on a deserted island.

Turns out the island was used as an airstrip during WWII and used for underground nuclear testing.

Kure Atoll. Northernmost coral atoll in the world. Green Island is the only bit of land here. Lonely little spec of land in the middle of nowhere (to the north west of Midway Islands).

I like how every square inch of Rasdhoo Island is used up. The Maldives do indeed look like a wonderful place to visit. Would love to go snorkelling there!!

Just look at the number of closely spaced atolls. But me a snorkelers paradise!
