What kind of shelf is that? For a sec, I thought it was an IKEA OMAR wine, spray-bombed black, but then realized the wavy bits are decorative/rigidity effects below the shelf surface (and the regular OMAR is more plain).

Its just your standard metal wire shelving that you buy at the hardware stores that support up to 800 lbs per shelf. Kinda like these. I admit, they aren't great looking, but they do allow for good ventilation which is more important to me than the nice cabinets that store heat like ovens.

Do you use the PS2 as a DVD player? I believe you can get progressive output with the slim ones, in case you didn't know.

I usually use it for movies as it gives me less hassle with DVD playback than my computer drive + software does.

Hey, I'm not knockin' it. They seem uber functional to me. Indeed, I have been considering an IKEA one for a component rack (with more shelves) and if that doesn't pan out or I change my mind I can always use it in a closet/garage/kitchen whatever. They only support 143 lbs per shelf though so I am interested in those you linkified (plus the options of chrome or black) but they do not seem to be available in narrower widths (around 18") ideal for stacking components. I want my schtuff higher up for ease of use and also castors as well for ease of access to the hindquarters.

So I am guessing that you have it set to 480p. (over component of course)

I use component, but i dunno if its set to 480P. Truthfully, I have never really touched the settings of the pstwo except to enable widescreen.

Definitely enable progressive scan, twice the colors for free!!!
It will make a difference on your setup.

Do you have it hooked up via optical??

At first I was thinking of making a component rack from 80/20 parts but figgered I don't need another project right now.

So that's when I turned to the IKEA shelves. They look ideal however the drawback is that if/when they are discontinued, parts will no longer be available whereas with common industrial ones they would.

Alas, my goggle skills have reached their limit and I cannot find any around 18x14" but only 18" sq. which would be silly.

I'm thinking any of these industrial solutions could easily be tarted up with a top shelf made of nicely finished wood or even go the t'other way with solid metal.

Nah, i have a stereo, so i just use the stereo outs through the AVOUT. I don't take my gaming that seriously, so I didnt want to buy a Benchmark DAC-1 just for the PStwo. Is the progressive scan an option in the PS two menu setup? Thanks!

Games aren't DD encoded so that doesn't really matter.

Yes, the progressive scan option should either be in the system menu, or when a DVD is inserted it should be in that menu when you press Select. IDK exactly if your certain version of PS2 has the option but I know that some of the slims do have the option.
Make sure the PS2 is in a HD component input if not already.

Dude, i was gonna do that too! I love the look of the extruded aluminum. But for the sake of getting a rack "right now" i just went to the hardware store

200lbs capacity means that the shelf can withstand 200lbs over the entire surface area of the rack - so its basically a unit of weight derived from the maximum pressure allowed for the shelf. You may have to do some back calculating to make sure your electronics will be supported based on pounds per sq. in of rack space.

My amplifier takes up just under 1/2 of the shelf only and is 50-60lbs, so that would be pretty tight with the 168lb per shelf spec. If you think you might upgrade to an external amplifier that weighs like 100-120lbs or one of those beefy receivers that weighs like 80lbs, you may want to reconsider.

Nevertheless, your needs may fall beneath the 200lb per shelf rating, so you would be fine (especially since DVD players, TV digi boxes, are all <30lbs a piece. )

Thanks Ill check it out tonight. My LCD Monitor's Component inputs are all the same - I believe they are good at least to 1080i.

What would be a better choice of furniture for the HT equipment? I change apartments every year so thats the reason why I don't own any bulky furniture. I actually don't really have an eye for what furniture would be fitting. I do have a basic understanding of what helps to make the system sound good, so that's where I have put the funds into. High back leather chairs lead to a cupping effect on the ears which negatively affects imaging, so those are out... I live by myself, so there is no need for a sofa... Any ideas?
In the case of yours, the room doesn't look like it has a lot of room for expansion, but a huge home theater setup isn't designed for just you, at least, not typically - so a couch still shouldn't be "out". Do you ever want to sprawl out? Also, in a lot of cases, not just yours specifically, I find the TV and speakers dwarf the furniture they flank/occupy. It reminds me of an adult trying to sit in a little kid's chair.

I guess what I'm saying is: think size

All this said, the components you have are quite nice =)

I have a full sized bed in that room, does that count as furniture?
I certainly can sprawl out on it if I wanted.

I had friends over the other day and I had to buy 4 chairs and a table. Sigh, I could have spent that money on a PEQ for my sub....

Most of you in this thread seem to know quite a bit about home audio, so I've decided to try to harvest your knowledge for my own gain....

I'm going to be moving out of my current residence soon, and have depended on my roommate's A/V setup for the few years I've lived with him. I'm looking at building my own system piece by piece, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on it. Any recommendations on bang for the buck? I'm looking mainly for musical clarity; I like subwooferness in movies, but I'm not gonna be throwing keggers at my place, and I hate rap

I agree, and include detailed information about what you're trying to accomplish including budget.

Have you looked at my sticky thread at all?

Just sneak in the 65" TV one day without her knowing. If she mentions she noticed something odd, just say you rearranged the equipment to make things look neater.

Still in the process of building my towers and center channel. Hopefully will be done by thanksgiving.

Any specific design you are following for your towers and center? Dayton WWMT/WMTW's?

i was going to go WWMT, but I decided since it is my first build,I'll keep it simple and go with the modula MT for now. I got a tower designed already for it so I will start construction on that this weekend. Driver + crossover cost will be about 300 bucks. not bad at all.
