Still in the process of building my towers and center channel. Hopefully will be done by thanksgiving.

Any specific design you are following for your towers and center? Dayton WWMT/WMTW's?

i was going to go WWMT, but I decided since it is my first build,I'll keep it simple and go with the modula MT for now. I got a tower designed already for it so I will start construction on that this weekend. Driver + crossover cost will be about 300 bucks. not bad at all.

Nice! It'd be pretty cool if you could post pix of the process and then finished product

Ugh, my Mavica only has floppy disc so I have to use my old laptop to use them, and the laptop power adapter is buggy and doesn't always work so I got to wait until it works to upload the pics, or use our other digi.

Not too much going on here. I use to have it hooked up to my computer for surround sound in my old apartment, but my comp and TV are in separate rooms now. It's a Samsung LN-T4066F. Caught it on sale for about $1600. Upgraded from a 32" Wega, that was a great TV, but the difference in playing the PS3 on SD and HD was too much to ignore. I'm also running TVersity on my desktop in the other so I can watch/listen to all my media files through the PS3.

Nice, have you tried pulling out your floorstanding speakers so that they are flush with the front of your cab? This might actually help with bass evenness (less boomy), stereo imaging and soundstage. (also keeping your speakers symmetrical with the TV would help a ton)

I plan on doing that when we get around to the living room on the remodeling project list (The pink walls and brown carpet have to go. The previous owner was apparently still living in the Disco era.).

They once were arranged like you described but right now the speakers are hiding the holes I put in the wall to run the ethernet cable since wireless just wasn't cutting it.

Edit: btw, I have problems with creating a good sound stage in that room because there's a 25' peak cathedral ceiling, 2 pairs of sliding glass doors on the left, and a large flagstone fireplace and open loft area on the right. The sound bounces all over the place and the cedar ceiling tends to swallow up a lot of it too. There's an unfinished room upstairs that's about 400 sf that I plan on making into a media room eventually, but that's even further down the honey-do list than the living room.

There is always some hope. Bass output is related to the volume of the room. The more volume of air that needs to be displaced, the more powerful and numerous the subwoofers have to get to facilitate the bass region.

I've been looking to upgrade the sub because of the room size but haven't been prepared to dish out the money simply to upgrade the sub. A new receiver is more important right now

However, one of the neighbors was having a garage sale this morning and I noticed he had a Klipsch RSW-12. There were a few minor cosmetic issues with the cabinet but nothing that couldn't be fixed easily. I asked him how much he wanted and he replied "40 bucks." It took all my power not to faint on the spot. I quickly gave him the 40 bucks, took it home, and now it's all set up. What an improvement! Punchy bass again. Now my wife can sell the KSW-10 on FleaBay and I'll be able to pocket some extra cash as a bonus.

Good day so far.

I'm going to be moving out of my current residence soon, and have depended on my roommate's A/V setup for the few years I've lived with him. I'm looking at building my own system piece by piece, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on it. Any recommendations on bang for the buck? I'm looking mainly for musical clarity; I like subwooferness in movies, but I'm not gonna be throwing keggers at my place, and I hate rap

Do you like to build stuff? You can save some money by building your own speakers, subwoofer, and amps. The first thing you'll need is a quality pre-amp or receiver. I just upgraded my receiver to an Onkyo 605, which supports the latest HDMI 1.3 spec (great for future proofing). If you want a good pre-amp, Emotiva is highly recommended. The Onkyo 605 is around $400 and the Emotiva LMC-1 pre-amp is $500.

If you're planning on building this piece-by-piece, start out with a good pair of front speakers. Next add a subwoofer, then a center and satellites. There are a lot of good speaker/sub designs and a few good kits out there if you want to try your hand at making them yourself. I'm building an SVS killer over Thanksgiving - a 4' cylinder sub with a 600w 18" MJ-18 subwoofer. Total cost minus amp is under $300, which is pretty good compared to the $1,000+ price tag of the higher-end SVS stuff. You can get used stuff for good prices over at Audiogon as well. AV123 has the Rockets on sale right now too:

why would you spend 700 on headphones?</end quote></div>

Why would you spend 70,000 on speakers when a 700 pair of headphones will surpass their performance, that's the real question here. Why would you spend 20 on headphones?</end quote></div>

Because I have never felt an explosion during a movie with a pair of headphones.

Though good headphones will have better sound reproduction due to less power needed to reproduce lower amplitude waves than most loudspeakers, the sound waves traveling through my body and everything else in the nearby area (or block in some cases) creates and sound stage that is like nothing any headphones can produce.

Enjoy your headphones, I do at times, but I enjoy 1300watts (RMS) into my 7.1 setup much more.

You just need some bass shakers. When I was living in a small one-bedroom place I put two shakers on my chair along with my Sennheiser headphones. Boy was F.E.A.R. fun to play :Q

need to finish setting everything up...just moved in 4 months ago and haven't painted that room yet.

I am going to house my center channel below my TV this time as it's closer to ear level and the level of the main speakers.

Setup:
Toshiba CX32G60 32" CRT.
Toshiba M752 VCR (always have to clean the damn thing between uses every 3 years )
Yamakawa DVD288K/VGA DVD (mostly for region free ability, my wife gets discs from Japan from family)
Comcast/Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD
Yamaha HTR-5960 Reciever
Yamaha CCD-665 CD changer

Klipsch Academy
Klipsch Quartets
Insignia NS-B2111 (more temporary from my apartment until I figure out what I want to do)

Home Theatre Master MX500 to control it all easily.

I will be going to 50" Plasma/LCD this next year with the new house and keeping my wife happy we have other priorities than replacing a perfectly good TV (the picture quality of my set is very very high). Also will add a sub or two at that time. If the mortgage industry wasn't so fuxored now I'd be more spendy

Awesome idea, forgot all about that!
We got a Powershot S30 which takes pretty amazing pictures for how old it is.
The Mavica however takes really dated pictures but you can easily transfer them, not in my case however.

how can it be harder to transfer pictures from a sd (or is it still CF on the S30) than a floppy? Just grab a usb 2.0 memory card reader.

QFT...there are some sweet deals on cameras for $99 lately.

I have gotten so many people into SD300+ elphs that thought they were $100's of dollars while they were dealing with dinosaur cameras.

I have decided to look for some Klipsch KG 2.2 / 2.5's for rear surround duty since I have to modify my drop ceiling anyway.

I got a memory card reader, it is just that I am teh lazy.
I guess it would be easier or just as easy as the floppy, actually easier, the memory card reader is on my server and I end up moving the files off the floppy to the laptop to the server, where I could just leave them on the server.

AHHH, you guys are making this hard on me

Ok, lets not spam the thread, MOAR pics!!!

Called Klipsch and order a replacement grill for the RSW-12. The grill was almost as much as the sub at $32 shipped. (Props to Duane Duke at Klipsch for prompt service and shipping.)

I found that a black magic marker does a great job at touching up the blemishes on the cabinet. The sub really got a workout on Friday night too. Watched Transformers on HD-DVD and there were a couple of moments where the bass frequency hit so hard and low it almost made a couple of people nauseous.
