man some nice gear, but you guys need to spend some on getting a decent room. I am willing to bet that top end gear sounds worse than junk bin items in those room setups.

Really? It would play 1 second and stop here. Stupid connection and youtube is acting up again! We had the subs turned up and dust was staying airborne in the wavefronts. I actually got a headache from that. I need a SPL meter that goes higher than 140dB too.

Not necessarily, while a better room would improve the sound certainly, I know I have done quite a bit of work optimizing speaker position within the room. If you work diligently and have decent software and microphone, (and free time), it is possible to minimize room acoustic problems.

Placing the listening position at 0.38 of the room's length does a huge amount to minimize modal problems at the listening position. Speaker toe-in can help tremendously with minimizing first reflection off side-walls. Keeping speakers 3'+ away from side walls and the front wall helps greatly in minimizing SBIR associated with those walls. Finally, placing speakers at non 1/4 dimensions of the room helps to smoothen the response.

Is it perfect? Hell no, far from it! Is it enjoyable? Hell yes!

Does junk bin items sound better than what I currently have? No, not in this room especially after I have meticulously set everything up properly. Can junk bin items be made to sound their best using careful setup? Yes!

So, I agree, your point is applicable to people who just toss their equipment in and pick their listening position poorly. However, once care is put into the placement of equipment, don't underestimate the value of proper placement .

Proper placement costs nothing and yields excellent results. While getting a proper room is certainly very worthwhile, you cannot beat the price/performance ratio of proper placement [and as a college student price/performance is key ]

LOL!

Although no hearing protection that I know of would keep your ears from getting some sort of damage at >140dB.

Hearing protection really isn't the issue with lower frequencies. One has to worry about concussions from their brain banging into their skull.

Back in May I killed a workstation when a bass hit ripped the PCI-E cards right out of the slots. Systems don't like that much.

The nice thing is I don't have to worry about building integrity - a steel ship is very strong. Things will rattle and I used to pop lights all the time but now the bulbs are clipped down. Sometimes a tube will snap from vibration though.

lol, too bad, i've only experienced 120dB bass (pants flapping, feels like my heart is getting its beats reassigned). Mere childs play compared to what you have going on.

Yeah, it showed all the connections in back and then went around to the front to show all the pretty lights

Hehe thanks for the comments. My living room is long and thin, the TV is in one half and the PC & table is in the other half (where I stood to take the picture). My PC is connected with DMI & digital coax cables to the TV and decoder/receiver.... that is where I play all the content from.

I live in Tokyo, so you could say it is an expensive city.

I will consider upgrading the sound sometime I guess - there isn't too much "warmth" from those Sony speakers, the sound is there and clear but it doesn't seem to fill the space as I hoped it would.... maybe I just need to shed my inhibitions and crank the volume up a bit

As for that picture - good point - it was going to hang where the TV is.... until I decided to buy and buy a TV!

My next purchase is the final step in this system - a new (80 USD lol) CPU on my PC so I can play 1080p without the occassional stutters I see at the moment in fast moving content...

You may want to check-in at General Hardware forums here at AT to see if just changing out the CPU will grant you that. I'm under the impression that perhaps GPU might have to be involved as well...

I have a Nvidia 8800 GT, which is pretty much top of the range... it has onboard decoding for HD video. For every 720p title I've watched it has been perfect... but for a couple of 1080p movies/documentaries hit 100% CPU occassionally and I get a jerky playback.

My CPU is only an Athlon 1800 GHz, not even dual core... pretty old so switching it out for a quicker dualcore model shoudl solve it I think.

On the upside, I found an AFD button on the audio remote and it seems to switch between 2.1, Dolby Digital and other systems.... now the sound is much better... By using all 4 of the surround speakers it's much more immersive now! just have to find out what all the modes mean, Multi St vs Dolby PL vs PL2 II MV vs AF2 Auto...

With a DVD it should pass a DD signal, a light will come up on your receiver and play properly when in Auto Decode. Make sure your DVD player or HTPC is set to pass the DD stream.

Cheers.. that makes sense... Been experimenting now with a few different streams from different sources (real DVDs, downloaded DD5.1/DTS films, internet radio etc) and checking what happens.

Seems "A.F.D Auto" sounds like what I should select, but it doesn't seem to pick up when DD5.1 or DTS is being fed in (through the digital co-ax). When I use the A.F.D. button to change to Dolby Digital PL it lights up all 6 speakers and starts using them.

Never seems to have an option for DTS.. even though it's definitely DTS compatible.

Hmmm.. wish I had an English instruction book!

Seems the problem was on my AC3Filter.... I ticked "disallow PCM output in SPDIF mode" and now it is passing through SPDIF output correctly.... now no noises my PC makes (MSN Messenger new message, email coming in, mp3s) are sent through to the receiver....

Instead the encoded audio stream gets shunted out of the digital coax lead and the normal PC noises go out to my PC speakers - perfect!!!!!

Thinking back, I remember YOyoYOhowsDAjello mentioning encoded streams were just passed through and my sound card wasn't capable of encoding DD5.1 output... this brings it sharply in focus, along with the cool FAQ on the AC3Filter forum

http://ac3filter.net/forum/vie...&postorder=asc&start=0

Now it's time to go and re-watch some films play sound properly and see how they sound!!!!!!

EDIT: Damn, seems my sound card doesn't support DTS passthrough.... only DD. Waaaaaa

EDIT x2 : Yippeeeee a new driver updated fixed it! DD5.1 and everything playing ok now.... strange the driver on Asus website is not up to date, as the one on Realtek's website is much more recent and properly supports DTS.

Just ordered a Athlon 64 X2 3800+ DualCore which should be a nice speed boost, bargain for about 70 USD!

I think I meant 1.8 GHz ;-)

Nice!

Now that you have had more time with the system as it is arranged, have you felt that the RC25 center channel doesn't quite cut it compared to the heresy II? Or does it work out OK?

I am still running my original Athlon 700, but it's been relegated to torrent.

Thanks.

The RC25 is fine with the Heresy II's. It will be even finer once I get a solid Audyssey tweaking finished. I have a bad cable, wrong setting, or dead Pre Out chan to my sub. Doing some troubleshooting.
