Linux post removed. To many people can't read, and respect what others post on this forum, so I see no point in continuing this post, or wasting my time chasing the kiddies...

There are many great people here, but there are also many children who simply can't read, or respect anything, or anyone, so I'm tired of dealing with them in this post and have remove the information here.

For a n00b Linux user interested in getting my feet wet and shying away from the deep end, would you recommend Freespire ?? I didn't see it on the list, but I have some experience with Linspire, and now that they have opened up CnR installations for no fee, it seems a viable alternative.
I know the hardcore Linux guys will scoff at the idea, but for me this appears to be the distro that even a beginner could comprehend.
Comments ??

It's not that complicated, re-read the guide, and follow it. Use Distrowatch as your guide for FIRST starting at the top and then going from there as I have suggested. Linspire is number 22 on distrowatch.

Terrific post, indicates someone with a good knowledge of Linux

Unfortunately or fortunately (depends on how you look at it) Microsoft Windows is going to
have some serious competition with Linux (it may take some time). I'm just a "noob" with
Linux. I have used several different flavors, Suse, Fedora, Mepis (both the old and the
Ubuntu source.list version), Knoppix, Kanotix, DSL, Puppy, Beatrix, and a few more I can't
remember (I have a drawer full of CD's and the DVD Suse Linux distro ) As my signature says I'm
dual booting all the machines I have with both WinXP and Ubuntu (except the P4
or the PD 805, the 805 mobo wouldn't take Linux) Linux is free
to download ( go to Distrowatch or purchase on CD or DVD for a small amount of $, I got
some free CD's of Ubuntu and Kubuntu from their supplier Conical).
Like a lot of people I'm not ready to commit myself yet. I honestly want to wait and see
if the new OS "VISTA" is any good. ( I've read several posts and, as always, there are
some that don't like it (VISTA) and some that do. I have three(3) copies of WinXP 32 bit
and one copy WinXP 64 bit so obviously I haven't given up on Windows. ( I've been using
it since v3.11) Thanks DasFox

Hopefully this will help some users stray from the safety zone that is Windows. There are ups and downs to each side of the fence, but it's good that there are some people around to help explain them.

Thank you for the guide, I've downloaded many flavors of Linux and I am planning on switching over partially (dual boot) during the Christmas holidays. My immediate concern is drivers - specifically ATI drivers for x200M chipset in my laptop and the sound card. I know that ndiswrapper can be used for wireless drivers. I don't plan on gaming but I would like to be able to use XGL for eye candy. I don't mind using proprietary binaries (for now). Any advice or guide I can follow? My laptop is HP ZV6000.

Edit - I've already searched for and found some guides but they do mention that the video card drivers suck. They are also a bit outdated so I was wondering if progress has been made recently.

Jassi, go back and read the section towards the bottom just below all the links about Freenode and Xchat.

Trying to do something like this with a guide will drive you nutts, unless you're pretty experienced. Join the IRC channel of the distro you are using and seek help there.

Freenode is your best, and easiest choice for help.
