Just started using Ubuntu... Like it so far but cant seem to get the NVIDIA driver to work correctly. I install them and the system hangs when it boots....... Have to reinstall the back up driver... Kind of fun as it reminds me of the good old DOS days... Not ready to give up yet I like a challenge

I have used Ubuntu and Linspire/Freespire. I found Ubuntu to be easier to install. I even installed Kanotix and it was as easy as Ubuntu. I installed all three on newer and older hardware. I never could get Freespire to finish an installation without borking up. This may be due to my noobness or something, but I was astounded at the ease of the Ubuntu install.

I've always wanted to learn to use linux, but I never did so because of fear of incompatibility regarding software that I currently own including games.

I noticed you talking about "transgaming" or other progs to use windows programs.
How good would those be for performance gaming? Would I for example be able to play Battlefield 2142 at the same level of performance as in Windows within any of the linux versions?

If developers didn't create Linux binaries then you need to use Cedega created by Transgaming.

The only way to learn what games are supported well by Cedega is to hang around the Transgaming forums, or IRC channel #cedega on Freenode, and information about Freenode is also listed in this post, run into other Linux gamers, or surfing the web to learn about these games and Linux support for them.

Gaming is certainly not as widely supported in Linux as Windows.

I'm a fan of Ubuntu simply because of the great community. You can go into the IRC chat at any of the time of the day and there is somebody willing to walk you through whatever your problem is.

Yes why didn't I add Portage as a former Gentoo user, hmm, oh well. :roll:

I've added Portage, but the post is for Linux not BSD, which is ---> UNIX

Linux is a Unix based OS, it's not completely 100% Unix.

Thanks DasFox, great info. I second Xfce. Starting to see it more often especially on Live
CD's. I especially like it on Underground which is based on Arch Linux.

Well, ubuntu is definently not to my liking. And saying that gentoo is hard, is just plain wrong. It's very customizable, and very very basic. It's just a different setup than windows. Hell, i managed to get one up and running with minimal (very minimal) linux experience. And i'm typing from it now with all sorts of funny things. Besides, gentoo has loads of documentation. It doesn't get any better than this for personal use.
