Is SATA your only concern, if so, all Linux distros support SATA, this support comes from the
Kernel and has been around for quite a few years now.

I installed linux. How do I determine if the Video card is detected and the appropriate driver is being used?

Right now my linux version is kubuntu 6.10.
Machine is Celeron 3.0 GHz on Biostar P4M800-M7A(V7.0).

Edit: I am using integrated video (no separate card per se)

The post is only for helping people choose and figure out some of the differences between the versions.

Your question goes beyond the scope of this post.

Please use the IRC server as mentioned in the post, it will be the best way to make sure you have done everything correct, or that X windows is setup correct with which ever version you are using.

I recently tried Arch Linux and its very good too. Its package system is called Pacman and its very customizable. I would say its between Debian and Gentoo in terms of difficulty of setup but it runs great. Great community support as well.

Has anyone tried Sabayon? I'm running the liveCD right now, and even after using Ubuntu 7.04 exclusively since it came out, Sabayon is VERY impressive. Just like Ubuntu it detected and setup my wireless, and sound. But, it got the fonts correct out of the box. The fonts without any configuration look great, it got my X resolution to 96dpi which is something I could never get to happen in Ubuntu. The whole OS just looks amazing and works very well. The default theme is very cool looking also. I'm very tempted to switch to this as my distro. I'm used to Ubuntu at this point though, so I may be hard to switch.

Isn't Sabayon just Gentoo with better-looking defaults? Make sure it actually has portage before you install it, something Kororaa didn't have, rendering it useless.

Just finished a debian install after going a few years without a linux install on my machine. It's sweet to only have to download the 150 MB minimum install, then fire off apt-get to just grab what you need!

An interesting article for old machines and using Linux.

EDIT: I've been asked by Dasfox to remove this post. I'm not going to do so because this is a link to a helpful guide.

Dasfox, if you want to be a Nazi, do it elsewhere.

A SECOND EDIT: Now he told me he mistook my post for something else but wanted me to remove my edit. But, he told me I was acting like a child. Well, I thought it was childish to ask me to remove my post in the first place. Even if I don't like what someone wrote, I will defend their right to free speech.

There are many great people here, but there are also many children who simply can't read, or respect anything, or anyone, so I'm tired of dealing with them in this post and have remove the information here.

When I was growing up, I was really surprised to see how my parents gave my sister EVERYTHING she wanted. This included spending thousands of dollars per year on skating lessons even though she wasn't a really good skater and despite the fact my father wasn't even working. So, how did she turn out? She can't stand it when she doesn't win all the time. She should have been taught that every once in a while, people have a right to disagree.

You want to whine and complain when someone posts something you don't like and try to bully them into deleting their post. It's beyond description. I can't even come up with words to describe it.

Sorry to see this removed, it was (I think) helpfull for slowing the flood of "What flavor of *nix" threads.

btw, you need thicker skin, and to take a step back coolpurplefan, I had the same initial reaction when he PMed me. I took a step back, realized that he was doing a very good job on a very specific thing, and removed my post. It's nothing personal, it's not like he just doesn't like you, he was just trying to keep this 110% on topic and to the point.

It was his thread on his topic. A request to keep the post on topic (and such remove your post) is not unreasonable nor is it a 'free speech' issue as you suggest. Please freel free to start a new thread on that article you linked, that should be a good (but seperate) discussion as well.

DasFox, I'd personally appreciate it if you'd put the material back. CollPurpleFan, I suspect, you act more moderately in his future comments.

No. I posted a helpful link and he decided to crap on it.

As a matter of fact, he even said in his second PM that it was a mistake, he mistook my post for something else.

Now, who's not doing the thinking?

It's like someone saying you can't have an opinion on something or can't express it. And if he sees something he doesn't like, he'll crap.

YO coolpurplefan, I said I made a MISTAKE OK!

So get over, sheesh, all I THEN asked was that you removed all your comments about me, and you can't even do that.

What's the big deal dude?

DasFox,

I am not into Linux.
But, I see that many old-timers have good comments about this thread.
This is a public forum. You are bound to get posts that may be irrelevant. If you spend a lot of time on a thread, it is understandable that you want to keep it on topic. If you ask the guy to remove a post and he does not, just forget about it. It's not a big deal.

Look at it this way. Hundreds of threads are created here everyday and many of them are !@#$.
There are good threads too. But, not as many.
It is a shame if a good thread is removed for any reason.

We all spend time on these forums. Let's keep the number of good threads going up, not down. Please bring back your material and keep this a complete thread.

DasFox:

Would you be so kind to restore the post?

I think many people here would like to keep reading info from the post.

Thank You.

Maybe this is a good thing. Now someone with a little more maturity can make a sticky on this.

edit: ok, since everyone says someone needs to do something and then nobody ever does anything, I made a thread on this myself. Go offer suggestions for what needs to be in it and maybe it will be a success. Or don't and it will die a slow, painful thread-death. Text
