Okay- some more I found in the back of my memory:

1) There's a bridge with a guard standing in the middle. He sleeps for 30 min's, stays awake for 30 min's, sleeps for 30 min's, stays awake for 30 min's, etc. No matter how you try to cross the bridge (running, walking, biking), it takes exactly one hour to cross. If the guard sees you trying to cross the bridge, he'll tell you to go back. You cannot go any other way around the bridge, you must go across it. How do you get to the other side?

2) A man walks into his house, walks upstairs, and turns off the light. He then goes to sleep. He wakes up the next morning, looks outside and commits suicide. Why?

3) Jack and Jill are dead lying on the ground with a puddle of water and broken glass around them. How did they die? (this one's ridiculously easy)

4) A man jumps out a window from the twentieth floor of a building. He hears a phone call. He then screams and dies from landing on the asphalt. Why did he scream after the phone call? (Don't really like this one)

5) Two fathers and two sons go fishing. Each catch one fish. They come home with 3 fish altogether. Where did the extra 1 go? (easy one)

6) And this one is #7 from above, but I'm putting it again here for all to see.
Gargomoyle (sp?) has captured 50 smurfs. He tells them, "Tomorrow is your execution day. But I will give you a chance to live. I will line you up, all facing the same direction. I will randomly put either a black or white hat on your head. Starting from the smurf in the back (the one who can see the other 49 in front), if you guess the correct color of your hat, I will let you go." The smurfs have one night to figure out a plan. What plan do they come up to save the most # of smurfs? (Note: a smurf can see all the other smurfs in front of him. The 50 hats are randomly distributed (can be 25 white - 25 black or 3 white - 47 black).

Okay- all I can remember for now. Have fun!

new0) the water level will rise, although this is invisible to the naked eye. the volume of the boulder will equal the volume of displaced water spread across the surface area of the body of water, giving you the height raised. you float, however, because of the air in your body - notice how when you exhale underwater you sink.

You're standing in a room completely filled with pure methane that is 10 feet wide by 10 feet long by 10 feet high.

You strike a match standing in the middle of the room.

How big would the blast radius be if Methane expands to twice its normal density after combustion? (The room is by itself in a field and made with normal building materials.)

answer to the smurf question:

for the very last smurf, instead of guessing his own hat he says the color of the hat in front of him

1. (Guessed) He walks while the guard is sleeping for 29 minutes, then turns around. When the guard wakes up he will tell him to come back.

2. He is in a lighthouse (on a deserted island?) Turns off the spotlight, a boat passes but doesn't see it. He loses his chance to escape. Sorry I heard a version of this last year, and it is damn near impossible without yes/no questions. I just wanted to feel smart!

EDIT : I cheated and searched for the answer to the smurf question -- boy that one is a toughie!! Never would have guessed =)

Worst case scenario, you'd save 25 smurfs. There's a better solution.

Yea- the first one is correct.

Second one is close. He turns off the spotlight in the lighthouse accidentally, and when he wakes up in the morning, realizes all the boats have crashed. Commits suicide to avoid responsibility.

And yea- they're tough w/o yes/no questions.

The smurfs one is tough!

Does the water level raise, sink, or stay the same? Second, now you jump off the boat, but because of your wide girth you float. What happens to the water level now?

Water level will lower. The boat will rise and some of the water displaced to compensate for the weight of the boulder will go in place of the boat, so the overall level decrease.
The boulder don't float, so it won't displace enough water. If you were throwing out a piece of wood, the water level would have stayed the same

There won't be any blast without oxygen.

It's a son, his father, and grandfather. 2 sons 2 fathers, but only 3 people hence 3 fish.

Pure methane won't explode without oxygen, and the match won't burns in pure methane. Remember, you need oxygen.

They are a grandpa, his son and his nephew (grandpa is father to its son, its son is father to its nephew)

If it expands to twice its density, its volume would be half (or would fill a cube 8 feet by 8 feet by 8 feet)

There would be no blast radius because since it is filled with pure methane it has no O2 to explode. Trick question.

Actually wrong. I misread your post.

#0 Neither instance changes the water level, as your mass (added to that of theboat) was already present in the body of water, and redistributing that mass cannot change the water displaced by said mass.

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

Is this it. Grandfather-father-son

grandfather is father of father.
father is father of son.

father is both son and father.

The 50 hats are randomly distributed (can be 25 white - 25 black or 3 white - 47 black).

This is just a guess. Since I was C.S. we talked a lot about these kinds of problems in Automata Theory.

I figure that you can treat the two colors as a binary pattern. In that case 1 would be white, 0 black.

if the first two smurfs are solids, either 1-1 or 0-0, then the 3rd smurf should guess 1 for 1-1 or 0 for 0-0 in front of him. If the first 2 smurfs are 0-1 or 1-0, then the 3rd smurf should remain silent and the 4th smurf should guess 0 for 0-1 or 1 for 1-0. Iterate through the 50 till you finish guessing.

In this way, worst case scenario (the guesser is wrong every time), only a little more than 66% will be able to leave free, since 1 out of 4 will make an absolute guess, and 1 out of the first 3 will have to remain in the next guess. (It is more than 25 free with this solution BTW). If only 1/2 of the guessers get it right, which follows probability, then more like 90% go free.

I am pretty sure this is a good way of doing it, but there could be a better one. You could even write a pice of code with random generated binary to check this solution.

Sorry I didn't post earlier. Boss came in my room for a meeting on the projects. <sigh>

I think I brained my damage thinking about that smurf one though. Really good riddle.
