Hey guy, don't pay any attention to us amateurs, if you're in pain call your dentist. There ain't nothing that can be done for the pain of a root canal. You can go to the ER but they ain't gonna do shit but give you aspirin anyways.

Woah there I would NOT do that! Does it throb all the time or just when you try to bite down? If you're taking VIC and it does not dull it you definitely want to phone the doc.

I had that kind of pain after a root canal. When I went back in, the Dr. told me he had built the filling too high and it was hurting because of the bite. He ground it down in about a minute and the pain went away.

either there is a live nerve still in the tooth or the wrong tooth had the root canal done. with a correctly finished root canal procedure you will feel no pain afterwards, b/c the tooth is now dead.

don't over do the ibuprofen, be sure to take with food, you don't want a stomach bleed.

most teeth will need to be crowned after a root canal, but not all. a partial or bridge is needed when you have a tooth extracted, not when you have a root canal.

yeh, he should've checked your bite and adjusted it before you left.

I had a root canal many years ago, and during the procedure, I felt something "stick me" inside the area he was filling.
The dentist dismissed it because I had so much novacaine around the tooth, he said I couldn't have felt anything.

About 3 days later, I was back in the chair. Turns out, the material he used to fill the roots had gone through the bottom of the tooth, (he had drilled a bit too deep) and was indeed sticking me in the gum under the tooth.

He had to pull the tooth. (yippee...after going through the "discomfort" of a root canal...then an extraction...

I still have the bridge and pontic he built though. That would have been maybe 1979.... It's been removed by other dentists, minor cavities cleaned and repaired (in the bridging tooth) then cemented back in place...always with comments about what a wonderful job he did in building the bridge and what an unusual design...and how amazed they are at how long/well it's held up.

OP, without an x-ray, there's no way to diagnose the exact cause of the pain/discomfort. If it's still hurting Monday morning...be there when the dentist opens...and bitch like hell until they fit you into the schedule.

I've had a lot of dental work done in the last 2 years, including 2 root canals, an extraction, and 15 fillings. Here are my general findings:

- Root canals are better than extractions: You keep the tooth, your chance of dry socket is low/none, and you don't have to gag on gauze for hours. The expense is worth it.
- Malocclusion plays a pretty big role in tooth pain.
- Abscesses aren't something to mess around with. If you feel pain when biting down, the tooth feels wiggly, or your nearby lymph nodes are swollen, call the dentist and try to see him again. I had an abscess producing puss that filled a sac in half of the roof of my mouth. Disgusting.
- Pain from biting down: Abscess, malocclusion, or referred pain from a different tooth (I sometimes had pain in the tooth beside or below the one that was actually causing the problem)
- Pain after root canal: Didn't get all the pulp, you have an untreated abscess (this is my guess, since you said it feels loose and hurts when you bite down), or you developed an infection after the procedure.
- Take better care of your teeth. See the dentist for checkups and as soon as you think something is wrong. Mouth pain is the worst. You can't really push it to the back of your mind. It will keep you awake at night.

Keep in mind that I am not a dental professional, so this could be entirely wrong.

im pretty sure its the correct tooth. surrounding teeth dont hurt like this one when touched

If you go back in, he'll probably use a bite stick to verify it's the right tooth. I just had a tooth pulled last week. I was experiencing pain when biting down on my 2nd molar and I was sure that was the one causing the problem. He used a bite stick and we figured out that the pain was really coming from my wisdom tooth.

that should've been done to begin with. also an endodontist may use an ice cube to verify which tooth is actually sensitive.

Yeah, he used both the bite stick and some sort of cold sensitivity instrument to figure it out. I had an abscess above my wisdom tooth that was referring pain to the 2nd molar.

Dry socket. Youch. If it is really bothering you I suggest going back. Either you need stronger painkillers or your antibiotics aren't working. Either way you should contact your dentist immediately. Pain is a signal something is wrong.

dry socket is from wisdom teeth removal, not a root canal.

try some NSAIDs to reduce inflammation.

Dry socket can be from ANY tooth removal, but you are correct in that it doesn't happen in root canals as they are packed (and there is really no blood clot to dislodge causing the dry socket).

yeah yeah i already said i was wrong!

I'm an old man (relatively speaking)....I respond and then read!

It's odd how pain can refer like that. I've had patients tell me they knew the offending tooth was in the lower jaw (mandible) only to find out it was totally in the upper (maxilla).

I had my first root canal on a molar that the filling had fallen out and i neglected it for years till the inside decayed to the point of excruciating pain. I felt great after leaving the dentist till the anesthetic he used started to wear off. I started feeling the pain a few hours after getting home so i took one of the pain pills he prescribed, tylox i think it was. Well, as the anesthetic continued to wear off the pain became greater and greater so i took two more tylox and it still didnt help. It wasnt as painful as the decayed tooth before but it was really annoying.

This pain lasted for about 2 days after, then for about 4-5 days after that the pain wasnt bad at all unless i bit down on the area. Even after he put in the crown it was still painful to bite down on it. Took a good week and a half to be able to chew normally on that side without pain.

I have another molar in the exact location on the opposite side that my wisdom tooth impacted and cracked in half and it has a huge hole in the middle of it. It's starting to give me problems. Just this Friday i had to leave work early because it was infected and i was running fever. Once the infection subsides i think i will just have the tooth pulled mainly because the last root canal and crown cost me around $700 with insurance.

Bah...sissy.

I have a molar that broke about 4 years ago. I went to the dentist and he quoted me $3500 for the root canal and crown...I have zero dental insurance nowadays, so I asked him to smooth it out and put some "temporary filling" material on it to keep the decay down.
He said it didn't need that, but he smoothed the edges somewhat.

Fast forward about 2 years and there's a fairly good size cavern going on in that tooth...a few months later, it hit the nerve. OMFG! I lived with Orabase for a couple of weeks...and it finally stopped hurting so bad.
Now, you could park a HumVee in the hole, but it really doesn't hurt...much.

Unfortunately, the decay has spread to the tooth next to it...and a filling fell out of that one a while back...I'm sure it's gonna have to be pulled too.

Nearly all my working life, I had EXCELLENT dental insurance...it sucks not having it now...
