Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" is the saddest song I have ever heard. As legend has it, George Clinton told Eddie Hazel to "play as if his mother had just died." I can't sit in a darkened room and listen to that song without bawling.
WTF..that's not a sad song, it's an instrumental. It's just atmospheric.
How about The Baby by Blake Shelton? Kinda cheesy I know, but the lyrics are really sad.
EDIT: Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Hazel weeps through his guitar. That song sounds in several spots like someone is crying and sobbing to the point of exhaustion. Hazel lets the listener relax several times, but returns with the sounds of agony. It's like being broken after losing someone you love, remembering somthing about them, getting that pain out by crying, relaxing, and then remembering something else... Maggot Brain is pleasent on the ear but painful on the heart.
I wish I could be more descriptive. I am not especially knowledgable about music theory or criticism. But of course, as is has been said: "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture."
You may not find it sad. I certainly do.
Give it another listen and try to ignore the (IMO) pointless Clinton voice-over at the beginning.
