I thought the record was more like 30,000+ achieved on a C2Q running at some godly 4+GHZ with 2900XT Crossfire?

nope. the ORB (Online Result Browser) on Futuremark reports only a little over 25K as the top score.

According to ORB it isn't. Wouldn't it be easier to try to break the record with a C2D though and a pair of 8800Ultras?

That depends... First, SLI does not seem to scale as well as Xfire at this time, or in this particular benchmark. Second, The CPU part of the benchmark is multithreaded, thus a C2Q is going to outperform a C2D unless the C2D is clock more than twice as fast as the C2Q. Third, the 3DMark06 score is affected by the CPU, even when the game itself is GPU bound, which does not make sense and seems utterly retarded and misleading. In other words, Someone could get the same frame-rates in the game section as someone else, yet have another 2,000 - 5,000 more '3DMarks'... FYI...

Oh, thanks for the clarification.

The HD 2900XT is around as fast as the 8800GTX (maybe a bit faster) in 3D Mark 06, but the good thing is it can get crazy overclocks. Stock is 745MHz, but clocks of 1GHz are very possible if you have the right cooling (you'll need way more than air for 1GHz). Also, Crossfire tends to scale better than SLI.

As for the C2D vs C2Q, 3D Mark 06 is optimized for quad-core processors (and maybe even more than quad, I don't know) so the best CPU is a C2Q. The game tests really don't see any difference when moving to quad-core, but the CPU test, which weighs heavily on the score, does.

Stock C2D @ 2.13GHz and Stock 8800GTS 513/798 = 8600 3DMarks

(I voted 8000-9000 cause I usually run stock.)

O/C'd C2D @ 3.0GHz and O/C'd 8800GTS 600/900 = 10800 3DMarks

This seems low. I'm getting 10800 on my o/c'd E6420 @ 3.0GHZ and 8800GTS @ 600/900. ??

Yeah, that score does seem a little low.

That's almost the exact score I got with my X1900XTX @ 690/800, but I was running an Opty @ 2.8GHZ.

I'd think you should be getting a better score than that.

why would we have a false and misleading option?

it has it uses

It certainly does have uses, but not with the '3DMarks' portion of it. If you are comparing SM 2.0 or 3.0 scores independent of the CPU scores then it is great.

The score is from 11-30-2006 so I'm sure I could get higher now with newer drivers.

I'll run it again right now.

Weird. This time I only got a 6,007.

My SM 3.0 and CPU scores were slightly higher buy my SM 2.0 score dropped by 450 points.
