Im wondering how far this chip can go. AMD has done some crazy OCes on their chips under ice,, to like 7GHZ ,,,,,,,, I figure if this 8 core 200 dollar chip can OC to 6Ghz I think I would take it over sandy or Ivy ,,,,, not E version tho.

What makes you think 6GHz is possible? I doubt many will even be near 5GHz.

So somebody managed to hit 7ghz on Ln2 with about 3/4 of the chip disabled and people are going to be hitting 6ghz at home on water/air.... keep dreaming.

I'll be buying mine in the coming weeks. Not hoping for 6GHz, but 5+ should be doable.

I agree that 6ghz is unreasonable, but I would be interested in seeing some OCs.

Thinking about upgrading my X6 to an 8320/8350 (its heavy lifting is VMs at the moment), but I'm on the fence. I think I'd prefer a 3770K but that is way outside my budget

I'm curious about this too, owners please speak up! I think there was some debate as to whether or not resonant clock mesh was enabled on Vishera (as opposed to just Trinity) and it's supposed to actually harm overclocks above around 4.5ghz.

The RCM on Vishera is discussed in this thread - IDC gave some insight into what is going on.

I should have my 8350 today. Hoping for 4.5 or so. I am not an extreme overclocker.

There is no RCM in Vishera. Average for the maximum OCs is around 4.7-4.9Ghz on good air/WC setups.

It seems like 5Ghz is the upper limit with top-end air cooling, and it still sucks a ton of juice for that. You can get most of that performance at 4.5Ghz with much safer volts and a lot less power/heat.

I never said 6Ghz ,,, I said they took a chip to 7Ghz,, but as far as

OCing this 8 core beast... I think 5Ghz to 5.5Ghz is reasonable with proper voltage.

I hit 4.5 on my FX8350 EASY. All I did was change the multiplier, and I've been running heavy stress with safe temps. Haven't run prime95 yet, but I've been gaming heavily for the past week and temps haven't peaked above 85c, generally staying around 50-60c when gaming. This is also using the stock cooler, so I'd imagine I could definitely push this baby to 5ghz at least with better cooling.

You'd need more volts to achieve 5ghz...a lot morr

Agreed. Where PileDriver shines in comparison to Bulldozer (and yes Intel fans, myself included, don't snicker and say it's not hard to improve on Bulldozer) is the base clock is boosted to a repectable level for this type of CPU (8150 is 3.6, turbo up to 4.2; 8350 is 4.0 turbo 4.2) On the high end, I had my 8350 boot into Windows 8 at 5 Ghz with 1.518v but too much power and heat etc.

I made some basic tweets to voltage and multiplier and could run at 4.6-4.7 but at load the power draw was still high. I have a Sabertooth 990FX mb and it has an automatic OC function in the BIOS which supposedly OCs safely. I let it do it's thing and got 20 x 217 for 4.334 Ghz. Not a breath-taking OC BUT EVERY setting was stock AND the power usuage was at stock ( no higher than 244 Watts when running IBT).

I've played with it for awhile and it's plenty fast at that 4.334 Ghz setting. When I get more time, I'll jump back into the fine tuning of the Vishera to achiev a 4.5-4.6 Ghz setting I like.

To give an example of system power(entire computer less monitor) draw when these chips are OC'd, with my 8150 at 4.6Ghz on IBT runs it peaked as high as 425 Watts per my Kill-O-Meter. With the 8350 at the same settings it went to 375 Watts. Note that was the absolute peak high with the load generally being 50 to 75 watts lower and much lower at idle.

Obviously the synthetic bench marks for the 8350 are better the 8150 at the same clock rate.

To sum it up, the 8350 does a great job of boosting the stock clock, sipping less power and narrowing the gap with like priced Intel chips. On the high end it OCs slightly better than a 8150 and uses less power BUT still uses a lot of power over @4.4-4.5 Ghz.

If your PC doesn't cause a brown out at the local nuclear power plant when you turn it on, your OC is too conservative. :hmm:

Let me also add as a fellow OCer that it's one thing to be able to boot into Windows and validate an OC for bragging rights. It's another thing to be able to run the CPU OC'd 24/7 in a stable setting without having to worry about a melt down.

My Intel 2500k rigs are nicely OC'd to 4.53 Ghz (44 x 103) on stock voltages and run stably and safely day and night. I can safely say the Piledriver 8350 can run at stock voltages day and night at 4.334Ghz.

Lets hope your dad doesn't secretly over-volt your processor :ninja:

You did actually say 6Ghz.
