Hi all, this is my current rig (I have all the parts, haven't really put anything together):

Antec P180 case
Seasonic S-12 500w
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe Mobo 939 socket
2GB (1GBx2) Corsair PC3200 DDR400 XMS RAM (2.5-3-3-6)
AMD x64 3200+ Venice Core CPU (939 socket, 2Ghz)
Thermalright XP90 heatsink (using arctic silver for thermal grease; using panaflo 80L for fan)
74GB WD Raptor (going to house OS obviously, will be Windows XP 32bit w/SP2)
160GB Maxtor (miscellaneous storage)
BFG 7800GTX OC
Creative Audigy 2.0 ZS
Motorola PCI 802.11g Wireless card
Dell 2405FPW LCD

I was wondering what kind of OCs people were getting on their 3200+ venice cores, and what would be a safe OC for me. I've never OCed before (been reading through the OC sticky at the top of this forum), and want to get some extra power on my system, but I dont really want to push it to the edge (though I think with my rig I can push pretty far without hitting the border).

All tips and suggestions welcome Thanks in advance

the 3000+ Venice OC's to 2.6-2.7 on air w/o too much trouble. start slow and work your way up.

sweet system, btw

Do what Zebo's Quick and Dirty 64 OC guide tells you to do. It's very popular so I guess that means it's good

Cool thanks guys... so I should be able to take it to 2.7 or 2.8 no sweat on air with my 3200 =) Anyone else wanna post what they've reached with their 3200s?

Mine will not go above 2.7 Ghz and that is with 1.6V which I think is too high. I am currently running it at ~2.6 at 1.5V.

Wonderfull setup.

And experimenting with my setup, I could not get my CPU stable at the same frequency using a 9X multi like the 3000+ would have. I reccomend sticking with the 3200+, $40 is not a lot.

Is this post concerning OCing w/ XP x64bit edition? Or by "AMD x64" did you simply mean Athlon 64? B/C I do know that PCStats recently did a test on the A64 w/ XP 64bit ed. and they stated that they get a lower OC w/ the 64 bit Windows than the 32 bit ed. I would like to see some more threads on A64 OC performance on XP64. I'm wondering if it's just driver support or what.

IIRC the Athlon 64 uses 3 more registers in 64 bit mode that are idle in 32 bit. Its the reason for most of the performance increases observed with 64 bit.

It is my understanding that there are 6 registers in 32 bit mode, and 9 in 64.

Edit: If im correct in what i said above (im not 100% sure) this would generate more heat, and also stress parts of the CPU not tested in a 32 bit overclocked environment.

hi there

i guess my overclock is pretty good - 2.7 GHz from 2.0 isn't too shabby. check out my sig. overclocking results are going to vary from system to system. i tried 2.8, but the system would always reboot...so i'm content with 2.7. i tested out my system with memtest and prime95 with no errors. good luck! hope you get a decent overclock.

been playing all the latest games without any problems - half-life 2, doom 3, far cry, unreal 2004, etc.

Hi guys so I'm having some trouble with booting =( I put my stuff together last night, and no display comes to my monitor The motherboard posts (if I dont put in a ram or cpu a female voice complains of no cpu installed or memory test failed) so that's not it.. but I don't know how to check if the ram/proc/vid card are working... any ideas anyone?

Do you have speakers plugged in?

With ram and CPU pulled out do you get anything on the screen or just the voice?

1. Check to make sure the video card is properly installed in the slot and the power cord is plugged in good.

2. Make sure the SLI card is in the "Single" position. And make sure it is in securely, it is very picky and can appear to be in the slot but not making good contact. Take it in and out several times if necessary. If that doesn't work try it in the "Dual" position, when I first got my board it was set in the dual position, I changed it to single and it wouldn't boot(probably wasn't making contact), I changed it back to dual and it booted.

3. With the shipped bios 1002 on mine back in Dec, everytime I made a hardware change I had to reset the CMOS jumper on the board. So each time you change the SLI card or reseat the GPU, reset the CMOS.

Yeah, I have my speakers plugged in to the on-board sound, I didnt try booting without cpu/ram and vid card in... should I try that and see if anything gets outputted to the screen? Will anything output to the screen in that situation? And the card is in the Single position and power cord was in very securely.. but I'll double check that to be sure as well.

When I reset the CMOS jumper, shoudl I remove the battery too, and unplug the psu? Or am I actually supposed to boot with the CMOS jumper in the reset position? and ill try reseating the card again too.

Move the jumper from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3 for about 10sec and remove the battery, no need to unplug the PS. And don't boot with the jumper in the reset position

x86-32 uses 8 architectural registers and usually 128 rename registers.
64-bit mode allows the use of 16 architectural registers. The performance benefit comes in the form of being able to keep more data within the execution core, reducing the need to swap data around, which uses clock cycles.

But what, specifically, does the Athlon-64 use? is it 6(32) and 9(64)?

Just set a RAM divider if your using basic RAM, then raise the FSB till its unstable once its unstable, raise the voltage a little and if that does not help then lower the FSB a few MHz. No real advice, DFI and MSI offer the best for overclocking imo.

Same old ${-}1T different core.

One more thing to check, do you have the 4pin AUX connector plugged in to the motherboard?

If you've never seen any output to the screen, it's starting to sound like it may be a problem with your GPU. But if thats the case you should be hearing the female voice saying "system failed VGA test" Does the fan on your GPU spin when you power up?
Have you double checked the connection to the monitor? Are you connecting with DVI or the standard Dsub? Have you tested the monitor on another system? Does the power light on the monitor flash or does it become continuos at some point?

Yes, I did plug in the 4 pin AUX to the mobo. The female voice hasn't said anything about VGA test failiing, and the fan on the GPU does spin up. I'm connecting with DVI, and I have used the monitor on old rig and it seemed to work fine on that (though it was VGA not DVI). Once I plug in my monitor to the vid card (the monitor is a 2405FPW), it goes from a green light (showing the check video screen on the display) to showing all black on the display and an orange light (on the power button and the the display mode listing 1-5 goes orange too)
