Future:
Some sort of higher zoom lens, such as the Canon 70-200 f/4L. Maybe I'll spring for the 70-200 f/4L IS or the f/2.8; which is better anyway, larger aperture or IS?

Depends on what kind of subjects you'll be shooting the most. If your subject is going to be moving, then I would go for the one with the larger aperture. If not moving, then IS. If the subject is still, IS will give you 1 or 2 more stops over f/2.8, but if the subject is moving, then IS wont' do you any good, since it's only meant to dampen any effects of vibrations done onto the camera and not the subject.

Or if you can take out another mortgage, get both IS and f/2.8.

Thanks. I might end up springing for the f/4L IS if I have money burning a hole in my pocket. Lol.

For me, the decision was more about weight. The F4L IS is MUCH lighter than the 2.8L IS.

Oh. I wasn't even going to consider the 2.8L IS because of it being $500 more than the F4L IS and the 2.8L non-IS.
F4L IS is a great lens. You will not regret it.

Man... you people are really convincing. After looking at everything going on, I might just pick up that f/4L IS just after school starts again. It would be pretty sweet to have that lens.

A lone voice from outside the Canikon empire.....

Current:
Sony Alpha A100 (you can add IS/VR/SSS after every lens )
Konica-Minolta 17-35/2.8-4 (D)
Konica-Minolta 28-75/2.8 (D)
Minolta 28/2
Minolta 50/1.7
Minolta 100/2.8 Macro
Minolta 70-210/4
Manfrotto tripod and ballhead
Sony HVL-F56AM flash
Minolta 3600HS(D) flash
Various filters

Future:
I'd like to get a 300mm prime of some sort, but I can't afford the G (professional) lens. I might look into a Sigma. Next purchase will actually probably be a good 55mm CPL, since I have a 58mm right now with a step-down that interferes with the hood on my Macro. Then, sometime next year I'll upgrade to the new Sony advanced amateur before our next trip to China. Maybe if I do well in the stock market I'll pick up a Zeiss lens along the way.

DA 50-200mm/4

if anything I want to flesh out >20 and <40 , and then at 100 and 130. I'm definitely enjoying the picture quality of my prime the best

Current gear:

Nikon D40X
18-55mm kit lens
55-200mm VR lens
ML-L3 wireless remote
Cheapo generic tripod.
Lowerpro Nova 3 AW
Spare battery
2 multi-coated clear filters + 2 polarized
Nikon lens cleaner pen
Random free pen + post-it pad

Incoming gear:
18-200mm VR lens, which will replace my kit and tele

Desired gear:
12-24mm lens or something similar
Flash unit, maybe SB-400 to start or goto SB-800
Maybe 17-55mm f/2.8 lens for indoor use
Thinking about adding a D200 level body in about a year

My first SLR and my second camera ever. I picked up a Canon S2 IS back in May of this year.
I got a decent deal on a Nikon, so that's what I went with. ¥99.800 total back in July with the kit 18-55mm and the 55-200mm VR plus just under ¥15.000 in store credit to buy stuff like filters, remote, etc.

Sigma 10-20mm f/4 - f/5.6 EX DC HSM

Canon Powershot A520

Looking to get (probably, depending on how the real reviews rate it):

Nikon D300
17-55 F2.8
SB-800

Then probably add the 70-300VR later for a tele.

If the reviews don't turn out well, who knows what I will get.

The actual product looks a lot better than the one on the animation. I showed it off last week to my friend and they all agreed that it is a good quality and functional carrying bag. Trust me!

Stills:

Sony DSC-F717
VCL-HGD1758 x1.7 lens
VCL-HGD0758 x0.7 lens
Quantaray 7500A flash

All of the above was a gift from a friend that upgraded. How nice is that!!?? Yes, a friend to keep I do admit, however, that I am so very brand new to photography, that I don't know how to use the flash and I'm not all together familiar with the camera as of yet. I do know that it takes fantastic pictures.

Wow, I feel out of place here without having all that fancy equipment you guys have. All I have is a Fuji s5200 I've been thinking about taking the leap into DSLRs. I just dont know yet. I'm still a n00b when it comes to photography.

Canon 70-200mm f/4 L
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 580EX Flash
Canon BG-E2 Battery Grip
Canon SD1000 (for the wife)
Canon Elan 7 (film camera)
Canon Battery Grip for Elan 7

I also have an older Canon film camera I bought from a co-worker for $70. The Camera is a Canon A-1 in pristine condition with a 50mm f/1.4 lens and a Sigma 35-200mm f/4-5.6 lens.

And I have a Rolleiflex SL35 35mm SLR my Mom bought me in the early 80s when I was taking photography classes in high school. I have a 50mm lens and a 200mm lens for that, both are good quality and in excellent shape. I thought of trading them in when I started buying Canon gear in the late 90s but decided to hang onto them for sentimental reasons. Besides, the guy offered me almost $200 for the lot so that leads me to believe that they're possibly worth more than that to collectors.

Me too!

Although I recently invested in a Canon G9 that I'm looking to toy a bit more with...

I also have an aging Canon Powershot A400 and a shiny new Canon Powershot 850IS.

How many of you guys do this for a living?

I took 2 years of photography courses and it has never really developed into anything more than a hobby of mine...although, I haven't really pursued it as anything more than a hobby either. I've won a few contests and shot some great weddings but never really tried to make any money at it. Hell, I've spent a few years shooting motorsports here locally (Long Beach Grand Prix-full pit access and photo tower access) with really good results but I have a regular job so I'm happy just shooting for me.
