I was just wondering because this can be an awful expensive hobby

How do you like your D80?

I moved from a D70 to a D80. The D80 is better in almost every way *except* ISO noise and flash sync speed. I have been really dissapointed in the D80 regarding it's high-ISO performance from day-one. It's something I deal with a lot and it's pretty-much a stop worse than the D70 was. I work with wide-angle lenses a lot and with digital you need the use your ISO sensitivity to compensate for slower lenses.

The 1/500 flash sync speed was such a huge luxury on the D70 and I really miss it now. Of course, I was used to working with 1/125 sync for a long time, so I'm not totally heartbroken. The D80 can wirelessly command flashes, and it's a great feature to use with my SB-600.

The D80 has a *much* better viewfinder than the D70, but it's still not large enough for me to manually focus on fast-moving subjects. I use a DK-17M eyepiece enlarger and it works well enough for still subjects but it's still nowhere near ideal.

The AF is better, the increased buffer is nice, the body is smaller, the control scheme and used interface is better overall. I print most of my prints at 13x19" and so the jump in MP is significant, and helps offset the increased noise.

At the time I bought my D70, I wasn't particularly tied down to Nikon, it was clearly the best option for the money. When I upgraded to the D80, it looked good on paper but never really lived up to my expectations. I guess I'm harping on the negatives, but it really is a great camera when you compare it to the competition.

I've owned these for all of 3 weeks

I'm looking to purchase a 50mm F/1.8 and a better walk-around lens soon.

We have other cameras, but they're mainly my wifes.

Any recommendation on Filters (brand) for UV/Protection?

You don't own a lens worth protecting. The lens cap should work well enough.

I'm working on that also. I just ordered the grip and two extra batteries the other day, they should be here on Friday!

As stated, I'm getting the 50mm for sure, but I need a good walk around lens also. I need the suggestion so I can purchase at the same time.

I'm also considering the 70-200mm f/4L for my sons sports and other things along those lines. I'd like to get the wide/mid-range lens first though.

outdoors sports I take it? If so, you should be good w/ the f/4. Indoors might be a bit difficult.

Yes, all outdoors at my kids games and the Titans game if I want. I wasn't even considering the 2.8 because of the weight and I don't need an f-stop that low for outdoor use.

I guess what I'm wondering is the lens below is close enough to the L lens to get it. It has IS and a longer range.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bn...s&Q=&sku=397663&is=USA

This is the lens I want for walk-around, but it's a good chunk of change to get both and I'm just starting.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bn...s&Q=&sku=425812&is=USA

What other options are there in that range, but maybe more towards $500 instead of $1,000.

Excellent, Thank you for the suggestion. That does look like a decent piece of glass for the price. I like the 2.8 across the entire range.

I just need to pick up something before our trip to San Antonio in Nov!

I have the same lens (Tamron) and I love it. Its very nice to have the f/2.8 across the whole range! I would recommend that you go to a local camera shop so that you can pick out the sharpest copy.

After you get those lens, I highly recommend you buy my favorite slingshot bag.

PAQ BP-04003 SlingShot Backpack (New addition to my collection, I love this bag so much, much better than LowePRO IMHO )

Pic and spec

They have many colors to choose from. I am conservative and I bought the grey/black one.
I wonder who will buy the pink one ')

Nikkor AF 35mm f/2.0D
Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D
Bogen-Manfrotto 190XPRO tripod + 486RC2 head

Future:
Zoom-Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8D (to be replaced later by the Zoom-Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8D VR)
Nikon D300 + MB-D10
...? (depends on what kind of photography I'm doing, and of course how quickly my job can feed my case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrome)

I love my D50. I'll never sell it. That camera, the cheapest Nikon DSLR when I bought it, has let me buy so much more crap to attach to it. The D300 will be a big jump up (I just need to save up $2k first), but I want a f/2.8 telephoto zoom first. Glass takes priority over bodies for me.
Before anyone asks, the 18-200mm VR is the ultimate kit lens. It has noticeable distortion at either extreme, and noticeable vignetting at long focal lengths. But, it is extraordinarily versatile, so if you stop pixel-peeping, it's quite useful, albeit a slow-aperture lens.
