As a kid that loved books growing up thru the 70's/80's this one was a gem.

something about the protagonist resonated with me.

Robinson's Mars Trilogy. The only person I know who has heard of it is the guy who told me about it. The writing is overly verbose, but the story is good.

Is Alan Dean Foster obscure? He's got some good series.
Lol I used to love all Piers Anthony's books when I was a kid. Looking back they're mostly terrible.
Yeah, I just read through the Incarnations of Immortality series again last year, since I found out there was one released in the last decade. Ouch. Makes me rethink my plans to go through some of the Xanth ones.

I think we all have a soft spot for Bink.

I think I read only one of his books all the way through, Harpy Thyme (Xanth series). Someone left it behind in a classroom in middle school and I ended up reading it after I couldn't find out who it belonged to. I wouldn't say it was one of my favorite books, but it was more lighthearted and playful than most other fantasy books I've read.

Kim Stanley Robinson is AWESOME.

I would say my favorite would be the Hyperion Cantos, but, as far as I know its not really obscure.

I liked the book StarStrike by W. Michael Gear.

There was also a book series, I haven't read it in a long time, Atlantis something, where they go traveling in time with some crystal skulls, showing up at famous battles (like Rorke's Drift) and recharging the skulls with the energies released by the fighting.

Brian Daley - Floyt & Fitzhugh series - book 1 = ASIN: B0064SFYTY

Great modern(ish) space opera.

well, i played various RPGs so i got most of my fantasy stuff from there; Call Of Cthulhu and Gamma World were really big, for me.

But as for books, i LOVED a Heinlein book called Glory Road. Swashbuckling adventures .. kinda.

And in the same vein, but even funnier .. Another Fine Myth, by Robert Asprin. This is actually a cycle, but only the first 3-4 books were funny, it kinda got forced and repetitive after that.

"Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser"

with all due respect to your own taste, this is maybe the series i hated the most. half of it is rape, half is ridiculous scenarios that dont make sense to anyone over the age of 12.
"grey mouser is attacked by an earth elemental, who buries him. (literally buries the fucker alive) but mouser is so cool, he says fuck it and breathes by anaerobic respiration".

because if you are ever buried alive, just stop breathing and this will prevent you from dying.

im not making this shit up. this is actually a scene in a major mouser book.
