Kim Stanley Robinson is AWESOME.

I would say my favorite would be the Hyperion Cantos, but, as far as I know its not really obscure.

I enjoy both Robinson and Simmons as well. Hyperion is a book I still recommend often.

My contribution is The Gap Cycle by Stephen R. Donaldson. He is obviously best known for the Covenant series of fantasy books, but I found the Gap books to be much better.

I think that was part of his goal honestly. He doesn't write pleasant happy stories. Somehow it seemed to work in the Gap books for me even though those are very dark as well.

Go read something that has some substance to it.

I'm not in the mood to debate you about anything, I have other things I'd rather do.

yep I started reading The Hobbit in grade one and found nothing since.

Donaldson writes anti-heroes. If you don't like anti-heroes, you won't like Donaldson, but his writing is amazing. The Gap series is great, as is pretty much everything else he wrote. The only exception I've found is the last (3rd) Covenant series, I don't think it held up to the rest.

enlighten us please?

Best-selling, Hugo & Nebula award-winning authors are not obscure to those familiar with the genres.

Lieber's F & GM series was just below REH's Conan and Tolkien's Hobbit in its time. Pip & Flinx were as well known to SF readers.

Is Alan Dean Foster obscure? He's got some good series.

Yeah, I just read through the Incarnations of Immortality series again last year, since I found out there was one released in the last decade. Ouch. Makes me rethink my plans to go through some of the Xanth ones.

A lot of Anthony's early stuff was actually pretty good, but unfortunately he became a hack later on. If you want to review Xanth, I would confine yourself to the first 6, after that it goes downhill pretty quick.

Revelation Space is pretty good by Alastair Reynolds. It's not a light read, and the space opera is really sprawling, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't know how obscure these are, but none of my buddies into sci-fi know much about Asimov's Foundation or Robot series. The way the two dovetail is kind of nice as well.
