We all forget the importance of having a cool instrument cluster when purchasing a vehicle. When making a decision on buying a car, you should always take into consideration how cool the tach looks; it should be up there with safety and gas mileage IMO.

Here's mine. I like it because it's simple. No stupid screen giving me info about things I don't care about. I actually appreciate how little electronics my car has.

E46 M3:

E90 330i (yes, that is an M3 steering wheel but it's not an M3):

I can't say I care how "cool" my instruments look. All I really care about is legibility. Actually one of the "coolest" tachs out there is the one I think is the dumbest: the counter-clockwise tach on Aston Martins.

On balance I like the newer design on my 330i better than on my M3 because white on black is easier to see than white and orange on gray. The M3 is certainly fine, however, and I like that I get oil and water temperature gauges on that car.

Display under speedometer has steering wheel controls to show tons of info.

Compass/Temp/Radio Station
Mileage
Distance to empty
Oil Pressure
Oil Temp
Tire pressure per tire
G-forces instantaneous (per 4 directions)
G-forces peak since reset (per 4 directions)
0-60 Timer (with peak)
1/4 mile timer (with peak)
1/8 mile timer (with peak)
Break distance meter

I'm sure I've forgotten quite a few. It's also the interface for changing settings regarding auto-lock, accessory power off timer, lights on when keyfob is used to lock/unlock, honk on lock/unlock, etc when in park.

Weather, Movie times, gas prices, etc are on the radio though, not the instrument cluster.

Crappy cell phone pic i took at lunch of m3 tach:

Even crappier cell phone pic I took of A4 cluster when I was surprised with the mileage I was getting (this has become a normal occurrence...so not surprised anymore, but still impressed).

The Audi's is prettier, but I like the oil temp and varying rev-warning of the M3.

I kind of wish the last amber light and the red lights would eventually go out, leaving just a painted redline. The lights are just slightly distracting IMO. Certainly not a big deal, but I don't find the E46 M3 instrument cluster to be the height of readability.

Man, I was just having this conversation with a friend of mine the other day. The gauge cluster on my LGT is fairly snazzy and all, but the one on my 240SX is hands down the best I've ever seen. The transition from white faced in the day to black at night is just such neat trick and the fact that it was done so simply (no lights on the dash and thin black cellophane that appears white with a back light) is the icing on the cake.

I had that same feature on my old Maxima. Kind of neat. I still think white on black is best, but I guess I'm just a curmudgeon.

Not my pic, but mine looks identical. I have to wonder why the ozzies left out any sort of mark for redline, but not that big of a deal to me. I know where it is and only a minor issue if I'm in "manual" mode.

Wow - I have never seen a modern car with no redline on the tach. Seems like a bad idea, though obviously the rev limiter should keep the driver from damaging it.

Looks like I need to post a night shot since it seems that that is the trend.

Love the pictures.. I would post mine but it is the same as the blue Civic up there. Can we make a new rule to post the car when posting a picture?

Most of these are stock photos. I know the one I posted is. It takes too much effort to take a picture of your car if someone else already has.

For what it's worth mine are my actual cars - I had the pics floating around for unrelated reasons.

The picture is zoomed in on the speedometer making the tachometer and other pod not fully visible. They are much more visible when driving. My favorite part is the tracer LCDs that follow both the tach and speedometer and then blinking quickly when you approach redline.
