S3 card.. can't remember exactly, but it touted awesome compression techniques to achieve higher quality textures.
TNT2
Gefore2
8800GT

next, probably the 6850 when I can nab it for under $150 without rebates.

Wow I'm special

3dfx Voodoo 3
ATI x850 xt
Nvidia 8600GT
AMD Radeon 5850HD

Not many people are gonna beat my short list.

and it could have been even shorter since the 8600 gt wasn't much of an upgrade on the x850 xt, anyway. you must have been somewhat excited when that 5850hd showed up.

it's funny how on the older cards the fan was almost an afterthought. when my fan died on the 6600gt, it still ran ok unless I really pushed it. when I did that it still ran, but it started to artifact after awhile. these days when the fan dies your card will fry (at least if it's in sweden...)

I still have my fluid bearing Nidec Gamma 28 that I bought at RS to cool my Voodoo2! Still works like a charm, too. Most of the time, the video card will have many problems, and throttle itself, before it fries...at least today, assuming you don't have the wrong nVidia driver version .

Who has had the largest performance increase from one card to another? I went from a Radeon 9600XT 256mb to a GeForce 8800GTS 640. The GeForce was ridiculously fast compared to the Radeon. I think it was 3 generations ahead.

Virge dx--->Voodoo2

Might be forgetting a card or 2 but this is what I remember:

-Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo 1 (Most amazing / drastic PC upgrade, during a time when Quake 1 MP popularity was peaked and CRTs were the norm, Seeing Quake running on the voodoo card for the first time was jaw dropping)

-TNT 2 Ultra 32mb primary card + 2x Diamond Monster 3D II Voodoo2 24MB SLI (Amazing combo at the time, Reminds me of playing a lot of Descent 2 which ran better on the TNT2 due to TNT's strong D3D performance, Unreal ran superb on V2 SLI)

-Geforce 3 64mb

-Geforce 4 TI4200

-ATI 9800 Pro (My first and only ATI card, No real complaints it was a solid card)

-PNY Geforce 6800 GT 256MB

-EVGA Geforce 7800 GTX 512mb (Very solid card, had a 100mhz faster core & memory clockspeed vs. the 256mb models, I ran this card for years even skipping the Geforce 8 series.)

-EVGA Geforce GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked

-EVGA Geforce GTX 480 (bought this during the 1st week of launch, it has been great so far and no problems with overheating)

what would be more interesting is if we listed the prices, or even remembered the prices, lol

I bought the Rage instore at a CompUSA, and honestly have no recollection of how much I paid for it.

Looking at old invoices...

9700AIW from Newegg 2/21/2003 for $389
BFG 7800GTX from MWave 1/28/2006 for $499 o)
Asus 4850 (the first one) from Newegg 6/27/2008 for $199.99
Asus 4850 (the second one) from ebay 4/18/09 for $73.00
Asus 6870 Direct CU from Newegg 3/9/2011 for $219.99 (-$20 MIR)

Ha, I think that the most I paid was $225 for my 3870 on launch day, but I sold my x1950xt for ~ $100 at the same time so it didn't hurt so much. almost always seem to end up in the $150-$200 range other than that one time.

Virge dx--->Voodoo2
Mechwarrior 2...running slower than with pure software rendering on a Virge. Ah, the good old days. I think Virge -> GF2 beats that jump, though.

Hmm...
Virge: $25 cash, of my dad's money.
Voodoo2: $209, shipped, and the first PC component I bought brand new with my own money.
GF2: $132 shipped.
GF4: $170 shipped.
Radeon 9x00: all about $170.
5900XT + ZM80 (yes, you read correctly, and no, it was not easy keeping it cool): around $210 shipped, maybe $215 (I ordered with many other things, and took advantage of Newegg shipping cost weirdness to save some money, so it's hard to pin down exactly).
7300GT: $38 shipped.
7800GT: actually, I made money on this one (7800GT SLI died after around 2.5 years, replaced it with a single card, then stress tested both cards and found one was A-OK, instead of just trashing them).
GTX 460: $230 shipped.

ATI 9700 PRO
ATI AIW x800 xt

The tnt2 was the most I ever paid for a card. Since it was my first real build, I bought the latest and greatest at the time. I think it was around $400, maybe a little more. After seeing how fast it went from top of the line to middle of the pack, I've always bought a generation behind ever since.

lol...this is probably screwed up, but off the top of my head.

1. A long list of nothing that ever mattered much as long as it wasn't a "windows accelerator"
2. Diamond Monster 3D (Voodoo1) - MW2 and QuakeWorld: OMFG!!!!
3. Intel i740
4. Radeon DDR 32
5. GF3 Ti200
6. Radeon 9700 Pro
7. 7800GT
8. 8800GT

I might have missed some in there. There were some TNT 1 & 2 cards and Voodoo2 cards in there that I used at work at a computer store but never personally owned back around that i740.
