Voodoo 2 12 MB!!!!! - OMG $$$
Geforce 2 MX onboard - original nForce in a beige Falcon Northwest Talon system
8500 64 MB - $130 new clearance @ BB - different drivers for different games! Things have gotten much better since 2003, right?
9500 Pro 64 MB - $130 new clearance @ BB, used for almost 2 years!
9800 Pro 128 MB - $80 used, Doom 3 caused me to sell it after about three months.
6800 128 MB - NewEgg, not sure - It rocked Doom3, which I hated and only used as performance benchmark.
6800U 256 MB - $400 (!!!), NewEgg
5900U 256 MB - $50 John Deere Swap Sheet (was in college and realized that I couldn't afford the entire rig the 6800U was in )
6600 256 MB - NewEgg, Passively cooled, ~$100 I think
7800 GT 256 MB - $345 new on launch day!
6800 GT 256 MB - ~$200 fs/ft (sold it later for $170, was defective on delivery, had to eat $170 loss )
6800 256 MB - ~$100 NewEgg
7900 GTO 512 MB - ~$230 NewEgg - used for almost a year!
3870 512 MB - $130 clearance @ BB (full circle!)
4830 512 MB - $70 fs/ft - used for almost two years!
4830 512 MB (xfire) - $60 fs/ft
5870 1GB - $200 Newegg

I got married and card purchases slowed down To be clear, this is only my main rig listing... Pretty sure there was an x800xt PE in there somewhere, I just don't remember where, exactly

Hmm, I'm trying to do my list but I can't remember what video card my TRS-80 had. If we count only x86 PC's, anyone remember what the Compaq Luggable used?

I had one of those (Compaq Luggable). It had a Hercules CGA video card if I recall correctly. I know it was CGA, not sure whatever brand made it though.

Mine had a 10MB HDD, with 640kB of RAM, along with two 5.25" floppy drives. The processor was an 8088.

Quick observation on trends...most of the long timers all started on 3DFX (how couldn't you?). Most everyone avoided ATI until the 9000 series. And thankfully most everyone avoided the Nvidia 5000 series.

I'd be doing good if I could just remember the relative ordering and years of when I owned cards by a given vendor (matrox/NV/ATI)...am just amazed at you guys that can actually remember the specific make and model of your cards going back however far in history.

Just remembered I had a Diamond Viper Savage 2000 in between the Voodoo2 and Voodoo5 5500, IIRC. The best Video Card ever made....that only worked properly for 2 Games, UT and Q3.

I'm another chronic upgrader/tinkerer. Here's what I can remember:

Voodoo 3 16GB AGP
ATI Radeon DDR
ATI Radeon 7500
ATI Radeon 8500 - bought new, ~$110. Was a steal at the time. Driver updates over its life gave it like 30% more performance, or more.
MSI GeForce 3 Ti 200 - bought it brand new, retail. Paid something like $200-250.
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 - bought used off AT. forget price.
GeForce 4 Ti 4800SE
ATI 9700 Pro
ATI 9800 Pro
ATI X800 XT - bought new near launch like $250+.
ATI X850 XT PE
ATI X1900 XT
Nvidia 6600GT (yes, a downgrade - stopped gaming for a bit)
Nvidia 7800GT
Nvidia 7900GT
Nvidia 8800GT - bought new near launch like $250+.
Sapphire ATI 3870 - bought used, ~$100
ATI 4850 - bought used, ~$150
ATI 5770 - traded for it. Stopgap card, ended up wanting more power.
Gigabyte GTX 460 768MB - bought brand new at launch, $190 Canadian after rebate plus tax. ~$215 tax in. Sold it for $135 6 months later because I got a good deal on a 6870.
Sapphire ATI 6870 - bought used, ~$200

I'm definitely leaving some out, but this is off the top of my head, just by remembering and looking at lists of ATI and Nvidia present and past GPU's.

Well, this should be interesting since I have a hard time remembering what I did yesterday. I had to employ the assistance of Newegg History to get this together - haha.

Rage 128 (my very first build; lasted 4 years)
OEM Radeon 9800 SE 128MB (used for 3 years, then my backup. borrowed to a friend who is still using this card 8 years after I bought it!)
EVGA GeForce 6600GT 128MB (lasted 1 year then died)
EVGA GeForce 6600GT 128MB (lasted 2 years then died)
2x MSI HD4830 1GB (2 years current, 1 is being sent in for RMA)

My parents' 2nd PC came with an nvidia Riva 128 (STB velocity before STB was acquired by 3dfx) chipset and Turok looked so shitty and unfiltered that it literally made me cry. Due to that, my parents agreed to add a 3Dfx (later 3dfx, with a lower-case "d") Voodoo2 chipset (Diamond Monster 3D II 8 MB). We had that setup for four years from 5/98 to 3/02.

In 2002, I got a Hypersonic PC of my own with an ATi 9700 Pro. However, I was the only person in the world who hated the 9700 Pro, so I upgraded to a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra the following spring (2003), then in the late spring/early summer 04 I upgraded to a 6800 GT (evga board). By late 06, the HSF was too clogged up with dust, so my parents bought me a Biohazard PC in late 06 with 2 8800 GTXs, and something in that died after I had it for less than 2 months. 8 months, after that, I decided to build my own, which included an 8800GT that died, followed by another 8800 GT that also died with the whole system, presumably since I was an amateur builder at the time and didn't really build it right (it was always pretty unstable). About a year after that, in 9/2009, built a second PC, and it's been workly perfectly fine 1.5 years now, as I learned from my mistakes after fooling with/building my first. I started with a 9800 GTX+ (eVGA, reference) and now have a GTX 460 768MB (Asus, reference).

Since I only have a Socket AM2+ mobo and that's limited to AMD 45nm processors, I'm considering upgrading to SB, but I'm not going to upgrade anything else. I'd be fine if I could find an 8GB kit of really low latency DDR2 RAM and if AMD had a 32nm Phenom II X4 (3.2 GHz cores) with ~3 GHz L3 cache that fit into an AM2+ mobo, but they don't, so I'm thinking about upgrading to SB.

not built, but bought -
1985, original IBM PC, must have had MGP card
1988, 286 with 10 MB RAM & $4000 video card with Z-buffer running
a highly functional 3D-solid modelling ap named "Aries" ... highly
functional as in, you could build industrial strength models and bill
customers for the work. had to work hard for that system.

1990, 286 with MGP card or VGA, can't remember
1990, 386 with VGA card, Windows 3
...etc.

need more coffee to answer this question.
