Thread based on nostalgia? Count me in. I'm going to see if I can remember what computers the GPUs were in and which games caused me to upgrade.

Compaq Presario 2200 Desktop - Whatever 2 MB integrated graphic card came with it.

Games played: NFS 3:HP, NFS 4:HS...can't really remember what else. I was in 5th grade.

Compaq Presario 5000US Desktop - nVidia Vanta LT 8 MB AGP

Games: Rainbow 6, StarCraft

Cyberpower PC - Radeon 7000/VE (GA-7VAXP Ultra, Duron 750 Mhz)

Games: Unreal Tournament (Infiltration mod), Quake 3

Custom PC - eVGA GeForce 6800 NU 128 MB - Unlocked to 16 pipes (A7V880, Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Mobile, 1 GB RAM)

Games: Doom 3, Half-Life 2

Custom PC - HIS Radeon 4890 HD 1 GB (790X-UD4P, Phenom II X2 550 Black, 4 GB)

Game: Crysis.

ATi MACH 64 2Mb
Matrox Millennium G200 8Mb
Nvidia TNT2 32Mb
Nvidia Geforce 2 Ti
Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600 (died)
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro

Oddly enough it gets a bit hazy after this... (Uni? ;P) but I believe it went:

ATi Radeon X800XL
ATi Radeon X1950 XT
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX (I was building my friend a PC and the GTX was too big for his case, so he swapped it for my GTS).
Nvidia Geforce GTX 275

I seem to remember having a 6600 GT in there somewhere?

And I'm currently looking at a GTX 560 Ti.

Probably my fondest memory of upgrading was from G200 to TNT2 - at the time, I used to play TFC clanned and got an absolute max of 20fps in software mode on some horrbly low res. After putting my shiny new card in I was able to hit 60-70 which totally blew me away.

Primary upgrade path:

1. nVidia TNT2 Ultra (Diamond Viper V770 Ultra) [500MHz Pentium III, 128MB PC100, Live! Value]
2. nVidia GeForce2 MX (I/O Magic) [1GHz Pentium III, 256MB PC133 (?), Live! 5.1]
2. ATi Radeon 7000/VE (OEM) [1.2GHz Thunderbird, 512MB PC133 (?), Live! 5.1]
3. ATi Radeon 9600 Pro EZ 256MB (VisionTek) [A7N8X-E Deluxe, Barton 2600+, 512MB DDR-400 (?), Live! 5.1]
4. nVidia GeForce 7900GT 512MB (eVGA, clocked at 7950GT speeds) [975X Platinum PowerUp Edition, E6600, 2GB DDR2-800, X-Fi XtremeMusic]
5. ATi Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (Sapphire, upgraded for the shaders) [975X Platinum PowerUp Edition, Q6600, 2GB DDR2-800, X-Fi XtremeMusic]
6. ATi Radeon HD 4850 512MB (Sapphire) [P5Q Pro, Q6600, 4GB DDR2-800, X-Fi XtremeMusic]
7. ATi Radeon HD 5870 1024MB (ASUS) [P5Q Pro, Q6600, 4GB DDR2-800, X-Fi XtremeMusic]

Laptop:

nVidia GeForce 8600M GT (DDR2, Dell Vostro 1500) [T5270, 2GB DDR2-667]

In secondary systems:

nVidia GeForce 6200 AGP (PNY, 64-bit memory) [A7N8X-E Deluxe, Barton 2600+, 512MB PC2700 (?), Live! Value]
ATi Radeon X850 XT (PCIe, later sold entire system) [GA-8N-SLI, Pentium D 930, 1GB DDR2-667, Live! 5.1]

Never used:

ATi Radeon 7500 (PCI)
nVidia GeForce3 Ti 500 (ASUS; I found this in 2007...someone was throwing it out)
nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 (bought for $20 from eBay in 2007 and broken by friends)

All of my home's computer parts were purchased by my father and thus I never experienced gaming at maximum settings, smooth frame rates, or resolutions above 1024x768 until I went to college and bought a 7900GT. I remember playing through Halo at 800x600 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City at 640x480 on a GeForce2 MX. Halo looked a lot worse on my PC than on the XBOX; my computer didn't support the shiny pseudo-reflections on Master Chief's armor and the weapons and vehicles and thus the game looked like a cartoon. I beat Need for Speed: Most Wanted at 640x480 as well (near-maximum settings on a 9600 Pro EZ). The mere thought of doing this today makes my eyes bleed. On the other hand, I appreciated weird things like "gameplay" and "storyline" much more back then.

some old onboard solution,
then diablo 2 ran a bit slow on it so I thought it would be smart to get a matrox 256mb - but it was actually not any better than the online solution because the drivers for it were so old.
Then I got an Nvidia Geforce 4 128mb.
Then I started playing FPS (Enemy Territory) so I upgraded to a 5800 vanilla flashed to a 5850.
Right before the 7 series came out I was playing Half Life 2 and I got a great deal on a 6800 vanilla.
I did not get any card during the 7xxx generation.
Once the 9xxx series came out I was playing COD2 and the 6800 was not cutting it. I graduated and bought myself a used 8800 gts 320.
I did not get any card during the 9xxx generation because the gains were not that great.
Playing COD4 I got a 285 gtx, then at best buy they were selling one for half the price of newegg so I bought a second for SLI.
I then sold that entire system and rebuilt a year or so after adding the second 285, this time I spent a lot of money upgrading my motherboard, case, RAM etc so I got a 5870. Got addicted to 3 monitor setup.
Experienced a lot of issues with it driver wise, once Nvidia got their act together I got two 570 gtxs in SLI.
