How likely would external and internal recruiters and HR send my resume to my manager if I post my resume online and if there's an open position in my department? Can they even do that without consulting with me?

I don't know for sure, but I think if they consider you for the position, they're going to check with your manager anyway if its for a job with your company.

Just make it sound like you enjoy where you are at. Some along the lines of raving about how cool the other position sounds so that it seems like you're currently happy, but that you'd just be supremely happy in the other position.

Not a lot of potential good can come from posting for an internal job without at least making your manager aware. From my experience, at least :O

a recruiter would have to be retarded to look at your resume, see you currently work for company X, then try to submit you for a position at company X. doing it without even telling you would be even more retarded.

i've never heard of a recruiter submitting someone for a position without even talking to the candidate.

My resume's always online, on Linked-In, Monster, and Dice, if I recall. It's part of my profile, and my current employer can go look at it any time they want. They're listed at the top .

Same. Actually had another company contact me through LinkedIn wanting to steal me away.

That's the way to do it, I think. Then there's some sort of plausible deniability about looking. I would have to assume that HR at any decent sized company is monitoring the big named sites to see if they can find any employees posting resumes.

Not sure if you are speaking about posting for a job within your company or externally. My company has positions within I can apply to. As soon as I apply and fill in the little resume section, an email goes out to my manager saying look, your employee has applied for a position within the company for team x and so on. So they will know.

If it's external, sometimes company reps will look for candidates but they don't usually go out and look for resumes unless you apply to the position.

For a recruiter or your company HR person , to see that you currently work at said company and to submit the resume to say your manager who is looking for an extra member, would be quite stupid.

Many people I worked with submitted externally and got jobs, manager found out when they were told by the employee not by random searching.

wait is it bad if our employer urges us to keep our resumes current?

This actually happened to me at my last job. I suddenly get called into the boss's office and he's like "uh, so I just got a call from a recruiter asking about you and how you were as an employee". He said I am a great employee and the recruiter immediately hung up.

That led into a conversation about if I was happy where I was. I had my resume on Monster, but I wasn't really looking at the time and certainly no recruiter had contacted me about any jobs. I don't know how he thought I wasn't still at the current company if he saw my resume.

That's gotta be an odd conversation if you weren't looking for a new job. Did your boss fear you were going to leave after that?

Pretty much. There was suddenly an emphasis on knowledge transfer since I was the only developer maintaining their financial applications.

Yea I hate knowledge transfers. Usually means I'll be pulled to another team or put to work on something I'm not familiar with.

I had the same thing internally happen to me. I used to work for a manager in the same company that after a year working on his team would have promoted me but company procedures call for rotations of developers fairly new to the company. I was rotated to another team but this manager hinted he would open a position for promotion soon and that I should look for it since we are allowed to do so if we have been voluntarily moved.

Well 3 months in my new team I see the position and knowing if I apply, my new manager would know via the automated email that gets sent out. So I talked to my new manager about the promotion and they told me I could go back if I wanted or continue working in the new team and I would be promoted later.

I stayed because I felt like it would look bad learning the new project in 3 months then leaving to go back to my old team. I've been doing a ton more work and hoping for the promotion some time. My old team members would message me asking to apply to go back but I've learned a ton more on the new team...just hope the new manager keeps to the word or else I'll post out when I get a chance.

It's way easier to post to a promotion at the same company than it is to work your way to one on one team for some reason.
