Anybody know when the bundle pickups would be, like if we have to be there all day? I want the desktop combo, but I don't want to have to take the day off from work to get it. Ideally I'd leave work around 3, get to Burbank by 5 (if I'm lucky), get my bundle (and maybe stick around for the giveaway stuff).

Edit: Heh, I guess that's what happens when I don't refresh after coming back from lunch; I guess BoKingWen and I are on the same page.

Hello,
i'm new to this forum, first post, although i read posts here 4-5times a day. I have a decision to make -
I have been planning on setting up a new rig, i run my business online and pretty often i have excel (2 windows) calculator, word, internet explorer, mozilla firefox (5 wndows), windows media player, wndows explorer... all open at the same time. I game atleast an hour a day too, and its summer so pretty soon it will be 2 hrs a day. I was planning on getting

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Integrated into Chip FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3200BPBOX - Retail 199$

ABIT AV8-3rd Eye Socket 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail 120$

Those as my base. I need an OS too.
so thats looking at about 400-450$

This new Amd/microsoft deal has messed my plans up,in a nice way.

Now anyways i was planning on spending 500$ on cpu, mb, and OS.
1. Should i get the 250$ package and spend 250$ on a vid card(games like hl2, counter-strike source...)

2.or should i go with the 500$ (will it run games without a vid card, if not how much can i get a card for considering i dont think that mobo has slots for agp or pci)

All comments are welcome. Thank you very much

Ryan

I know one of your useless technology mongers knows this, and I demand that you spit out this information and help me give my friend valuable input on whether he should buy this bundle or not.

Or I will send your name to Satan and recommend you be specifically spayed.

Sweet! I live in Princeton, NJ which is pretty close to East Brunswick. I guess I'll have to hold off on buying a new system until then (I was gonna buy towards begining of July, but with that desktop bundle I will definately wait)!!

The app you run are not really CPU intensive. If you run stuff like zip/unzip huge files, rip DVD, process huge 3D transformation or serve database/Web application with bunch of hits, and still want to do something else at the same time, then yeah dual Opteron will definitely help. But if you just put up a couple of Excel sheets, calculator and surf the web, dual Opteron is overkill. Remember while $500 is a great deal, you still have to pay for Reg/ECC memory, and a really good power supply, and you won?t be able to run latest games because of the lack of AGP/PCI Express slot.

BTW, does anyone who's been to this event know if it is OK for people to get there like 5:30 even if it starts at 3? I am thinking of going to Chicago ones, but won't be able to get out of work til 5.

I'll prob leave at around 2:30. I don't want to get stuck in traffic. I hope it's freaking entertaining....6 hours! I also hope I can resell the server package .

Seeing as the computer industry is moving to dual cores, is it worth it to get the dual opteron setup or the single athlon64 setup for the long run? I'm hoping this next computer of mine would last a good 5 years as I'm not big into investing money into pcs. Right now my primary use for a computer is to do schoolwork/internet/games. I don't particularly enjoy pc gaming as much as I do console gaming so my money is definatly going towards the Xbox360 and/or PS3. Seeing my needs, a the Athlon64 seems the better deal but I would much rather spend a little bit more now than to spend a lot on a new computer later on...

How long run? I wouldn't expect the need to upgrade to dual for at LEAST 3 years. Maybe 5+. A few games will come out and support it in a year or two, but it won't become vital (like 3d accelerators did) for at least 3+ years I figure. If you aren't gaming or doing any cpu-heavy media work you will never need dual cores.

1) The A64 CPU is retail box but the Opteron is OEM tray.

2) Motherboards come in retail box packages

3) The OSs will come in just a plastic case, not for resale, not the retail version.

Please feel free to pick up your bundles upon registration/arrival at the event.

Quick question, I live in Gainesville, FL and both Tampa and Atlanta are close to my city. Do you thik I could go to one and get both bundles and then go to the other one and get two more bundles? That would be tight.

I agree with Lithan. I can't see that single CPU would be either obsolete or insufficient any time soon (at least 3 years - I still successfully use my 7 year old computer!). This especially holds true if you are not into games! One more note - in the worst case if your needs do change, some of the MBs have firmware update available if you do choose to upgrade from single- to dual-CPU!

I guess my definition of long run is at least 5 years, preferably more. I might get into heavy media work but I really don't know. From what I've seen, the mhz "race" seems to be slowing down as Intel and AMD both are switching to dual core cpus. I'm not too sure how dual cores will work and how much faster they'll get without needing heavy cooling.

If AMD's dual cores don't get much faster, I'll probably settle with the opteron setup. If dual cores do get substantially faster, then I'll get the Athlon combo and upgrade later on. I just wish I know where the processor industry will be heading so I can make a "guesstimate" before my computer gets out of date.
