Does this mean that people who reserved them last month wont get them or just people who are trying to purchase them now? They should have set a limit of bundles to be sold per event...

I paid for my bundle...and have waited over a month for it. I hope i get it.

The biting truth here is that one reason that AMD doesn't have as much support in the corporate segment is that they don't have the distribution capacity that Intel does, and they have to rely on 3rd parties to develop and manufacture chipsets and motherboards, instead of providing the entire platform like Intel can. Unfortunately this shortage looks kinda ugly because it brings that to light. That being said, I'm definitely an AMD fan and I ordered the workstation bundle, and will attend the Houston event. It's happening about 5 minutes down the freeway from my office.

You wouldn't be able to do that as you must present the credit card you purchased the bundle with and photo ID to pick it up. If you ordered the bundle, you must be there in person to get it.

Anything?

I decided against trying to purchase the server bundle so I didn't call to check the current availability. My previous post contains the telephone number of the distributor handling the bundles for the AMD Tech Tour, so anyone interested in trying to purchase any of the bundles should call them directly to see if they have more bundles available now. I didn't want to call them just to check availability if I wasn't going to buy one. I didn?t want to waste their time by tire kicking.

AMD/MS Tech Tour 64 too successful

Users hunt for missing 64-bit kit from AMD and Microsoft

Published Friday 17th June 2005 00:27 GMT

AMD and Microsoft want nothing more than to tell you about the wonders of 64-bit Windows computing. The problem is that they've run out of cheap, promotional hardware used to lure customers to their shared North American Tech Tour events, leaving many users questioning whether they'll attend the 64-bit marketing love fests.

Over the past month, AMD and Microsoft have offered prospective Tech Tour attendees massive discounts on PC and server bundles that include the 64-bit Athlon and Opteron chips in combination with 64-bit versions of XP and Windows Server 2003. These bundles have proved so popular that two of the world's largest technology companies simply can't deliver enough gear for the Tech Tour crowd. Word of the hardware shortage has people looking to hear about AMD and Microsoft's offerings concerned, since the marketing extravaganza is only four cities into a 13 city tour.

Microsoft are bringing you 64-bit computing at substantial savings!" the companies said in Tech Tour promotional material. "This offer is only available through the registration site, and you must attend the AMD/Microsoft Tech Tour 2005 to purchase."

The two vendors had been offering a PC system running on an Athlon64 3200+ and Windows XP x64 Edition for just $250. In addition, customers could pick up a server system with two Opteron 246 chips and Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition for just $500. Those prices, which basically include Windows for free along with the motherboards, are well below market prices and were meant to tempt resellers, system builders and other partners to get on the 64-bit bandwagon. Microsoft only recently rolled out its 64-bit desktop and server operating systems for AMD's chip and hoped a little brainwashing from 3pm to 10pm would push things along.

Potential Tech Tour attendees, however, quickly found out that the offer was too good to be true.

"Due to the popularity of the offer, we have sold out and do not have any bundles at this time, nor do we know whether there will be any available in the near future," the companies said today in a notice.

So far, events have been held in Chicago, Toronto, Tampa and Atlanta. There are still plenty of events yet to take place throughout the US and Canada, but a few less people might turn up with the prospect of cheap kit gone.

"I don't know if it's worth a drive to Houston now," said Arturo Castellanos, an IT consultant in Austin. "Asking for six hours of our time was already a stretch. The only thing that would get me down there now - besides free servers - is a quality remake of Ballmer's developers, developers, developers skit."

AMD likely has the most to lose should possible attendees drop out of the event because of missing hardware. It's doing all it can, especially in the server market, to exploit a lead over Intel with both 64-bit technology and dual-core processors. Microsoft has been very vocal about its support for AMD, mentioning the chip maker ahead of Intel in some 64-bit Windows promotional material.

Will the two vendors get their acts together and find some cheap PCs and servers for their customers? Here's hoping.

I think that article is very misleading (at least I hope so). My understanding is that if you've previously ordered any of these bundles and if your credit card has been charged, then your bundles have been reserved for you and will, be available for pick up at the event.

The real issue is that AMD has no more bundles available to sell to new registrants or additional orders for those who have already registered but didn't already purchase the bundles. Who ever wrote that article either didn't bother getting the facts straight - or wanted to sensationalize the issue. That would be a journalistic first, huh?

LOL @ teh newbs thinking the expiration of a "limited quantities" promotion means AMD's business model is flawed.

The fact is, AMD probably set aside 10-20K bundles for the whole tour. Since there probably aren't 10-20K ACTUAL system builders in all America who could attend, that probably felt like a safe number. Then the deal sites got ahold of it and people who want to make a quick buck or build a cheap system start buying them all up. They either ran out of bundles or cancelled the promo to stop being taken advantage of.

Once again 4 teh newbs......this is NOT an AMD Tour to build up their consumer base....nor to be generous and give us all hundreds of dollars worth of discounts on cutting edge hardware and software...thereby hurting the resellers of their product. Repeat, this is not the AMD Santa Claus Tour.

I don't recall that the promotional hardware bundles were listed as "limited quantities" when I registered.

I do. I believe the exact phrase was "while supplies last" .

So do I. As far as I remember, it clearly said "while supplies last."

This has been added to the tour page:

Haven?t ordered a bundle yet?

Due to the popularity of the AMD/Microsoft Tech Tour 2005 Desktop and Server Bundles, we are currently out of stock. Please check back in a few days for availability - we are working with our partners to increase the number of bundles available. Your patience is appreciated.

Just powered on my dual Opteron goodness and she's a keeper!

The Dallas show itself is a snore, me and a buddy got there at 3:50, just in time for the presentation to start. We stayed till about 4:35 (alot of marketing fluff espousing how FAST a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit OS is) then we headed downstairs to the bar to down mojitos. Came back up at 5:45, they were already serving food and handing out bundles instead of 6:15 like stated in the agenda. We got our bundles, ate some food, then went home.

Geek life is good.

I was informed by AMD guys, that those who attened the Tech Tour Show will get an email to order the buundles once they are in stock.

I did attend Dallas Show, It was good not that packed.. Food was plenty but so so, lot of drinks and cookies too. I saw a lot of people came only to eat (Some are Students too!), wait for the freebies, or pick up their bundles....

At the time of the draw many were not in the hall, they left their draw cards with friends to drop it for the draw. I think only one freebie was held for the absentee and he may be contacted.

I think sincere there are no bundles in stock many did not show up at all as well.
