I went to Comp USA to get a floppy drive. I walked in, and saw some loose in a display case. No box or anything, just a price sticker. I went to buy it, and it said "NON INVENTORY ITEM $ .01", and that's how much they sold it for! I thought it was a 1 time mistake, so I went and got a cinnabon =), came back and bought another for the same price. If anyone else has this in their Comp USA, which they probably do, try it out and verify it. Good luck =)

Also, didn't try it with any other items in the case such as loose burner and stuff. Maybe I should have.

Person on the register likely got chewed good later, 1 cent is a marker price for items that go back to manufacturer etc. they aren't supposed to sell the item at all.

I just want to forget about floppy drives. Why can't we just let them die? Good land though.

Hehehe.. That's kind of funny. I needed to flash my bios and needed a floppy this weekend. I pulled one out of a dead shell that I had lying around and just took a black magic marker to the face of it, to match my case. Worked like a charm! Doesn't look too bad!

Man, I am cheap... Then again, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't.

I wish we could let them, but I find myself needing them at critical times....mostly for a bootdisk when reformatting an HD or reinstalling an OS. I wish there was a better alternative, but I can't find one that always works.

Yea, have not used a floppy in years. Just make (or download like I did) a bootable CD. XP naturally boots off CD, but you can also download DOS boot CD disks.

I did this with a Memorex 2x DVD+R burner at OD about a year back, walked very quickly out to my car, dropped off the burner, went back in, got the other 2 on the shelf, but at that point they rang up at almost $200 apiece.

Oh well, a little good luck is nothing to frown at.

I always end up working on some PC that does not have boot up CD support..

I wish USB would replace 3.5, then I could buy a USB drive and use that, but its too late now with all of the older systems....

Here's a very simple way to create a Win98 floppy on bootable CD. I tried it and it's slick. What's also nice is you can add other files to the remaining portion of the CD, like flash files, etc. You could also use Nero to take the image from the actual floppy if you prefer.

True story:

My mom recently visited. She brought a floppy with several dozen Microsoft Word files. It was her autobiography.

I asked, "Why not just use one file?"

She explained that she kept running out of space. After writing a page, the gauge came on and showed she filled up the limit.

I had no idea what gauge she was talking about.

After some back and forth, we finally figured out she was referring to the scroll bar. Every time it appeared, she saved the file and started a new one.

You would be doing her a HUGE favor if you converted it and burned it for her onto a CD or two b/c man, those floppies fail like nothing else....
