Everyone has heard stories about people buying Steak with Food Stamps then loading them into their Cadillacs, but has anyone ever shown proof of them?

But, but, the recession ended two years ago when Obama took over!

This is all part of Obama's plan. To put as many people as possible on the government handout to force it's eventual collapse. Cloward-piven at work. There's a reason he's called the food stamp president.

Such a brilliant plan! Just how he managed to enact it before becoming president I'll never know. Such a crafty guy!

Before I moved away from the cesspool known as Illinois I saw this each and everytime I went to the grocery store. Half of the time they were on the cell phone trying to track down the pesky PIN number for the Link card since they weren't the legal holder of the card to begin with.

How does that article support your "cliffs"? If a family of four is making $22k a year collectively that is poor. Spending $30 on a DVD player doesn't quite negate that fact. Driving around a POS clunker that they paid $700 in cash for but drop over a grand in repairs annually may qualify them as having a car (3/4ths according to the link in the article) but that fails to negate the poverty claim. The "facts" they provide suggest and imply certain luxuries that don't reflect the truth. I mean, you really wanna say someone who buys a $30 DVD player at Walmart shouldn't be considered to be living in poverty? $30 makes or breaks a label of poverty? Get real.

Items made in China are cheap, the cost of most manufactured goods have dropped considerably over the last few decades. Elizabeth Warren has a great speech on youtube where she talks about how the cost of food, clothing, and entertainment has plummeted for all families. Everyone spends less on those aspects (as a percentage of income) yet gets more out of it than previous generations.

Who cares that the poor aren't that poor? The problem is that we are getting poorer. Things have been going in the wrong direction for too long now.

Yah because our money supply is static and every dollar the rich get takes a dollar from the poor.

The money supply should grow at a steady rate.

What happens when the rich suck the money up faster then the supply grows, what then?

The federal government has saddled the American people with so much debt we will never be able to pay it off, the price of basic goods is rising faster then the rate of inflation, the federal reserve gives money to banks as needed and with no questions asked, the federal reserve just prints money out of thin air, and hands that money over to big business,,,,,,,.

The cards are stacked in favor of big business.

where is the xbox360 and 60" plasma in your picture there?

Oh you're right, that would have added days and days worth of food to it.

The Heritage Foundation was, as usual, full of shit. They tried to act like buying a TV was the same thing today as it was in 1970, despite the fact that a 23 inch TV cost the 2010 equivalent of more than $2,000 today. An average month's rent for an apartment was $108 in 1970, the equivalent of $600 today. Real rent for an apartment averages about $950 however.

Ie: Price for a TV has gone way down on an inflation adjusted scale, but price for a roof over your head has gone way up. Hopefully that clears up why 'the poor' can afford cheap appliances while still having trouble with the basics, the relative cost has changed.

Shouldn't you guys know better than to trust information from the Heritage Foundation by now?

Job creators are not creating jobs. Time for the government to tax them and spend that money on direct hiring.

Cliffs: specific appliances have gotten way cheaper, basic requirements of living have gotten more expensive. Right wing bloggers are retarded.

poor people also get welfare and housing assistance. Cry me a river. Poor people also tend to be fatter. Maybe they should eat less and not use a/c. I did that when I was in college, why can't they? There are poor people who work their asses off to provide for their family, and I feel for them. The ones who don't work hard and expect the government to take care of them are worthless.

You're forgetting there is a very large portion of the population that simply doesn't want to work and sure doesn't want to work full time. 20 hours is fine to them because they get all their basics provided for them - food, clothing, shelter, cell phone, car/transportation, etc.

And then throw in 2 years of unemployment...why work? Work is for suckers.

At this point time work is for suckers.

Our leaders do not care about Americans; they only care for themselves.

America has evolved into the ultimate capitalistic society where every man will do whatever is necessary, including cheating fellow human beings, to secure their standard of living.

So what can a poor person do to cheat/capitalize on the situation? Be unemployed!

See even the poor have equal rights to profit from corruption.

Wow, this is a new one. Millions of people are now jobless in order to scam the system. This is some amazing political Stockholm Syndrome.

I know plenty of poor people. Some that live off as little as $300 a month. These people have homes that were left to them from parents or always been in the family. The homes are not expensive homes, probably worth $30-40K max. Out of that $300 they pay food, electric, clothing, heating, everything. That is $3600 a year income , that is what I consider poor. When you go to the store and the cost of a gallon of milk is too much so you never drink milk and you avoid common items like fruit because it cost too much , that is poor. These are people that live check to check, day to day doing odd jobs or picking up money wherever they can.

There is a flaw in the welfare system. To qualify they do not count the home you live in, the car you drive as assets. You can live in a million dollar home and drive a rolls royce and you will still qualify for welfare as long as it is your place of residence and your only car. They only count income, life insurance or savings accounts.

Being poor in the US is not always a choice, some people just do not know any better.

Are you saying that solid lower middle class jobs and better are in abundance and that such jobs are going unfilled? All someone needs to do to get such a job is to submit an application?

There are poverty-wage jobs without benefits (at least when 1 million people aren't applying for 50,000 McDonalds jobs), but with those jobs you'll still live in poverty.

Did you know that even a great many college graduates are unemployed or underemployed? For example, we have a large surplus of PhD. scientists. Also, the vast majority of people who graduate from law school today (7 years of college education) will end up unemployed (and unemployable) or underemployed-out-of-field.

Perhaps in your world, the world is filled with sunshine, rainbows, and moonbeams. In the real world we have too many working-aged people and not enough decent jobs for them.

Exactly what percentage of welfare recipients do you believe are living in million dollar homes and driving rolls royces? (more interestingly, how are they paying the property taxes on this million dollar home with their meager welfare checks?)
