Hi all,
Ok, I finally overclocked my 2600+ to 2300 mhz.....woot!
Ugh, not so fast the overclock only boots into windows @ 1.8 volts(gulp)
with an idle temp of 62c! ouch! this temp is definitly not acceptable, so i will need better cooling (i currently have a coolermaster heat pipe wit a vantec tornado.....36c idle/51c load.)

well, i would like to go with the 226watt tec air cooled solution from swifttech.
and swifttec states that this tec requires 25 amps on the 12volt rail.....i know i can get a dedicated meanwell or samlex psu for this, but i am trying to do it on the cheap, so can i just use an atx power supply(which i would use ONLY for the tec) that meets the 25amp@12volt requirement?

Sounds to me like you're going nuts to get an extra $20 out of your current processor.. Couldn't you just sell off your processor, upgrade, and run it air-cooled and save quite a bit of money over buying another power supply and peltier?

The peltier should run fine off a dedicated cheap power supply though.

Yeah you can do it. Just make sure that the PSU you get is rated for AT LEAST 25 amps at 12 volts (there is a sticker on the side of the PSU that gives you the ratings). A thing to keep in mind is you are gonna have to "jimmy-rig" the mobo power plug so the PSU will turn on with the switch.

As far as getting "an extra $20 out of your current processor" goes, you will always have that pelt for future CPU upgrades so you'll always be ahead of the ballgame there.

if you air cool right, you wont have a problem... I gave up the peltier idea about 7 years ago after having condensation problems in my overclocked K6-200....

I have a barton core 2500+ running at 2500MHz on air, its running at 1.825V and at 36C idle, and 43C under load. My heatsink is a TT Volcano 12 with an air induction pipe bring in room temp air, both ends have a temperature controlled 80mm fan capable of moving 74CFM at full speed, but neither get that high (plus its loud).... Alos using AS5 and my radeon 9800 pro has an artic cooler expelling its hot air out the back of the case.

overall my case isn't that loud and is pretty cool for what I consider a pretty damn good air overclock.

anyway, something to think about before you go trying to seal up your socket for condensation and such ;-)

good luck

on the both ends of your case, are you using Smart Case Fan II because they are capable of moving 74CFM. I was thinking of installing four of these on my antec 1000AMG case in which I have 4 80mm antec case fans 2 infront and 2 in on the back and one cheap 80mm LED fan on the side. Each Antec fan can produce 34CFM

I actually have a number more fans than the two, I only have them on each end of the air duct thats feeding my CPU.... keeps it pretty cool, they don't reach full speed until something like 52C, which my cpu never gets to.

You can use a standard atx PS, as long as you get 20 to 25 amps on the +12v side, a thing to remember, is to run at Least something off the 5v rail, or the 12v rail won't put out its max. Usually you can run the pelt at 80% of the rated voltage. Try www.allelectronics.com for a stand alne PS for the unit, or maybe ebay. I used to run Pelts all the time, only thing to watch, besides the normal condensation/insulation probs, is to insulate the rear side of the board, behind the cpu, and to use dielectric grease in the socket.

I would if I were you is sell your chip since its not a bad clocker you should at least beak even on it and just get a mobile barton. they clock much better than the desktop version only cost a bit more. I just got mine in today and a guy on the AMDMB forum got the same week and stepping as me and is getting 2.7 on AIR i'm just hopping for a low volatge 2.5
