Hi guys I was running a defrag on my backup drive and i accidently kicked the power button on my ups. With the backup drive installed in my computer it won't boot but if I take it out the computer runs fine. I have a lot of important files on that drive. Is there any way to fix the problem caused by the sudden power off. If the drive is plugged in the computer just bsods after the windows loading sceen. I'm not very savy with dos or command prompt can i run a checkdisk on the drive somehow to fix the files? Step by step intructions would be great!! I tried putting the drive in my external enclosure also and it crashes the machine also. I even tried putting it in another computer around the house and it crashes that computer too. Thanks in advance for the help.

You definitely did kill it.

More than likely the FILE TABLE or PARTITION TABLE
(or both) are totally messed up.

Your only hope would be to use a Software Recovery
Program such as R-Studio or Ontrack Pro to attempt
to rebuild the Table(s), recover what you need, then
Re-Partition/Format the drive.

Try booting from the WinXP CD and go to the repair console.

Try rebuild MBR or some of the other fancy commands.

FIXBOOT Write a new boot sector to the system partition
FIXMBR Repair the Master boot Record

You could try Knoppix, the linux on a CD distro which can read NTFS and may be able to recover some files. But more than likely the filesystem is completely hosed and unrecoverable by conventional methods.

Don't freak out yet.

See if you can boot to recovery console. Boot to your Windows CD and choose to repair using the recovery console. Choose your OS and log in with your local administrator password. Once you reach the C:>Windows prompt type: CHKDSK X: /P where X: is the drive letter of your damaged drive.

There is no reason to run fixboot or fixmbr on this drive. I don't understand everyones obsession with those commands.

Thanks I have been to busy to mess with the drive for the past couple of days. I will try your sugestions tonight if I have time. I rebuild the mbr and boot already but that didn't work. I have a friend that is an "uber nerd" as some call him that can get my files for me but I don't see him unless I'm at school and I'm doing a co-op so I won't be back for 7 months. Recovery console just crashes it won't let me get in at all. Same with safe mode. Are any of these programs you mentioned free?

Thanks

Hi,

I hope you fix it.

Try putting the drive in as slave, not boot/master. See if you can just copy the files onto another hdd through windows, if not, try DOS.

Some cdrw manufacturers have come up with cdrw drivers that will work in DOS [WOW], you'll have to do a search on google.

There are several good proggies for restoring data, but it does mean that if you don't want to pay, you'll have to look around for slightly less savoury ways to use the software as a 1 off.

try getdataback

Some of those who sell recovery software have a one-use or 30 day trial version. I believe ontrack is one of those. It would be worthwhile to download and try the trial version. Also, it is only $29 per session to buy it. One-use store bought version would be worth it to me to save my data.
